The Theory Of Everything
SIMPLE ANALYSIS: Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, David Thewlis. Phwoar, I almost wrote 'just see it..' and thought of finishing the review there until i realised how a) unhelpful b) cheesy and c) annoying that would be to any-one looking for an insight into the film. Seriously, oh mighty lord what a film this was. I was skeptical at first as i'm not big into romance or dramas but this film could blow a US aircraft carrier out of the water. I heard at least 5 people crying at various points in the film when I saw this in the cinema. It's like a demon of sorrow was high on caffeine just roaming around the movie theatre switching people's tear ducts on and off for fun. It was such a beautifully powerful film that I know nothing I write will do it justice. I think I've just found out which side of the fence I sit on of the philosophical question as to whether your life is objectively worse or not if you're unaware that something bad is happening to you, like an unawareness of your wife cheating on you. I genuinely think any-one's life is worse off having not seen this film. When Buddha spoke of the 4 stages of reaching enlightenment he should've included a 5th stage: The Theory Of Everything. I will never wrap my head around just how incredible the acting is in this film; Eddie Redmayne, who plays Stephen Hawking, could never act again a day in his life and i'd never forget his name. It's phenomenally performed by everyone involved, the writing is gorgeous and there is something about the way that even the filters used for filming in each take are done that makes you well up in your seat. I'm assuming all my mind really sees on the screen are the messages: "appreciate, then cry, appreciate, then cry." I'd recommend this film to any-one and every-one.
RATING: 9/10
You don't mess with the Zohan
SIMPLE ANALYSIS: Adam Sandler, John Turturro, Rob Schneider. Adam Sandler's not known for creating art when it comes to his film making and this isn't an exception. A superhuman, Israeli, special forces warrior who's real desire in life is to style hair. It's ridiculous, it's absurd but it wor... no, no it doesn't. It just overplays a ludicrous stereotype of Israeli people to the point where you almost forget there is a storyline and start wondering if this is a lengthy, elaborate advert for hummus. There is so little happening in the film and a lot of the dialogue is plain lazy. I know this is supposed to be a stupid comedy but they either work or they don't and this film falls head first into the latter. Any kind of sub-plot is easily forgettable too. If you're desperate enough to shed weight that you think even killing off brain cells will make you swifter then i can't recommend this film more, otherwise i'd suggest maybe looking at 'Waterboy' or 'Mr. Deeds' as some of Sandler's brighter moments in the past. RATING: 3.5/10
300
SIMPLE ANALYSIS: Gerard Butler, Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, Lena Headey. I swear to God when I first saw this film i hit puberty for a 2nd time. There is not one slice of this film that is not filled with creamy "badass"ness . You could show this film to Chuck Norris and his beard would retreat back into his chin and his black belt in karate would turn into a featherboa. This film is based on a true story of only, supposedly, 300 Spartans fighting off a gargantuan horde of invading Persians and holding their own due to vastly superior fighting ability. The casting for this film is so perfect that even the characters in the distant background without any lines could've gotten nominated for an Oscar. Everything about this film is engineered to just flood the screen with testosterone and it doesn't stop for a second throughout the movie. Don't be fooled though, this isn't just a mindless bloodbath of neanderthals beating their chests and screaming, it's extremely elegantly executed and the art of fighting is gloriously delivered on screen. As you'll find out it's not entirely realistic and even some of the fighting can be quite extravagant but it does nothing to weaken the immensity of this movie. Obviously i'd say it's targeted at a more masculine audience so if sword fights aren't your cup of tea then you may disagree with what i've said above. RATING 8.5/10
Conan The Barbarian
SIMPLE ANALYSIS: Jason Momoa, Ron Perlman, Stephen Lang. I have to say after hearing such atrocious, brutal reviews about this picture I was slightly surprised at how my attention was being held, even at an admittedly low level. This could be because my expectations had been set low before watching this film or maybe it just wasn't the eagerly awaited masterpiece people hoped it would be. Either way, i'll try and paint my own picture of this film aside from expectation or reception. In terms of casting they couldn't have picked a more fearsome looking man to play Conan. This is a man who in real life got through his audition to play a tribe leader in 'Game of Thrones' by performing a full length Haka. He puts in a solid performance frowning for two hours and all he really does is cut people down but that's what the role is all about so he puts on a fair show. After a while when your brain has seen enough men scythed down the film does struggle to offer anything more in the way of entertainment. The story line is quite bizarre and while none of the acting makes you roll your eyes into the back of your head there's just not really enough to captivate even the most eager parts of your mind. If you're a 12 year old boy who just wants to see some violence then i'd say go right ahead but if you're looking for an action that requires you to own a couple of brain cells then i'd look elsewhere. RATING 4/10
Tower Heist
SIMPLY ANALYSIS: Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Casey Affleck, Matthew Broderick, Michael Pena, Robert Downey SR. (oh yea). Another of one Ben Stiller's less character crazy comedies and it contains a great list of comic actors to fill the roles. It has it's moments when it can tickle your funny bone and Eddie Murphy in particular is quite convincing in a role i haven't seen him take up before. It's a very easy film to watch and would be perfect for a young family to sit down with. It's one of those subtly funny films that doesn't use over-dramatic characters to make the joke so blatantly obvious that you understand it's being done on purpose so it becomes funny again, Stiller's character is quite similar to his role in 'There's Something About Mary' if that makes it simpler. I don't think any-one's gonna call this a 'must-see' movie but it's a well put together, easy on the eyes comedy to enjoy. On an irrelevant side-note it would be a good present to buy for any kid under the age of 14 if you're at a loss this year. RATING 6/10
Psycho (1960)
SIMPLE ANALYSIS: Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh. Here we go, yet another film that echoes through film history due to it's written brilliance. Just like with the more recently made 'American Psycho' and 'Fight Club' this film contains challenging ideals that reverberate within you for weeks after the film has ended. It's about time i found a new man-crush in acting to compete with my admiration for Brad Pitt and my God did Anthony Perkins burst through the gates. The genuine tone in everything he says and the awkward calmness of him is utterly mesmerising. Without praising him too far i have to add It is so unbelievably obvious he is completely consumed in his role so if for no other reason watch this film just to watch this artist in full stride. Alfred Hitchcock's psycho may be an old film, for those of you who take pleasure in modern cinematography and don't fancy traipsing back through the ages, but i truly believe this film is timeless and the fact it's in black and white shouldn't put you off watching it. This really is a unique film to sit in front of and you shouldn't expect to follow the usual story line that horror/thriller films display. Please, please, please dive into this magnificently put together dream of an artistic performance. If nothing else you will be able to walk around all smug for having watched a film that the majority of people under the age of 40 living today would not give the time to honour themselves with and you may even be able to spread this cultural gold. RATING 8.5/10
