“Hang on! Hang on!” More strangled sounds came over the communication device, gears and electric currrents seemed to speed up until the clank of more levers being pulled, settling the technical background noise appeared to stabilize. “Well, good news is that I know the amperage required to break through the barrier. Bad news is....I think I know where he might be.”
Drevon rolled his eye and waited, one of his underlings walked into his office and waved a stack of parchments before setting them down on his desk. The smaller elf blinked at the severed limb and immediately became fearful. Drevon gave the boy a glare and then waved his hand off to dismiss him. Komui started talking again, grabbing his attention. “Where?”
“I...I...I can’t be certain, this is just a theory. I can connect your private channel to my signal, so you can hear what I am hearing. I-I...could really use a second opinion on this.”
“Do it!” He sounded impatient now.
The scientist yelped at the sterness in the Dean’s voice and scrambled to tune the frequency of their shared channel. Soon Drevon would hear a louder static as the new signal connected to his comms., which Komui was trying to adjust so it would be audible. “Sorry...just a few more tweaks here and...there we go!” The knight would be able to hear the audio, and what was transmitted was distrubing. The background noise had a distant crackling sound, louder was the burst and whisps of what could only be preceived as flames. Gradually more sound came into the picture, the clanging of metal followed by loud rumbles. But what made it more haunting were the different varieties of groans and growls, unmistakably demonic in origin.
Drevon listened intently, trying to hear anything familiar.
“Sir, I’m not an expert on this matter, but what else in Azeroth could produce fel energy of this magnitude?”
“Shhh!” He listened, he heard something right before Komui started talking. It was Rath, he was breathing heavily and sounded to be in mild pain at the moment. Slowly the rogue started to whisper, “It’s okay...” He was speaking to someone, that’s what he heard before, a faint voice. A female, crying and begging for help.
Komui immediately went silent as the other voices came into range and flipped some switches to begin recording the audio.
The woman let out a loud scream, mixed with obvious tears of pain. Rath had been crying as well, frustration obvious as he couldn’t help the other prisoner, “Just hang in there...”
One could nearly hear Komui gulp on the other end, and he lightly whispered in a timid voice, “I-Is that him, sir? Is Mr.Souleater alive?”
Moments later, the sounds of a baby crying would be heard, and then Rath again, “Of all the places...Maelyn? Mae?” The woman was too busy trying to quiet down the newborn to answer him. A sigh of relief before a loud creak was heared, “My oh my, you tenants are noisy. Oh?” Tykki spotted the baby, the mother would be heard screaming, “No!” And then Rath, “Give it back! No!” The baby’s crying ceased and the mother let out a howl of sorrow. The sound of Rath hitting the ground out of defeat was heard next, and then Drevon finally spoke up, “That’s enough for today. I want you to try to catch any names and accidental slips on location or even plans.”
Komui whimpered lightly but cleared his throat as he responded to Drevon, “Y-yes...sir. If you can send me more coffee to the dorms, that would be most appreciative. Should I contact you if anything...um...of interest to you might show up?”
“I’ll have Aley-....I’ll send the coffee. And yes, contact me for anything that could give us answers.”
The scientist stammered for a moment before he spoke up. “W-What if....I mean, if evidence proves reliable. If the worst case possible?” He hated asking something so melancholy after discovering a great success, but the situation of Rath possibly dying had to be brought in the realm of possibilities.
“You speak not a word to anyone and let only me know.”
“Y-Yes, sir...I will start my post and keep an ear out. Contact me when you want a report.”
“I’ll expect a report at the end of each week. I’ll have your coffee sent in the next hour or so.”
“Roger that, sir. Ending transmission.” The sound of the comms switching off could be heard.
Drevon sat back in his chair, looking down at the stack of parchements on his desk that was dropped off earlier. His thoughts went to Rath before he shook his head, “Better not end up like Kris, Rath.”
