One of my favorite changes the movie makes to the book is turning Cotter from a grumpy old man to an eccentric old lady, and writing her relationship with her husband in such a way that it directly parallels LeeGene's relationship.

Just like Lee and Eugene, Cotter and her husband have a significant age gap (we don't know how big it's supposed to be, but Lesley Manville is 19 years older than Lisandro Alonso). Similarly to Lee, Cotter is very talkative and kind of an oddball, and similarly to Eugene, her husband is quiet and hard to read.

And although a straight relationship, they don't really fit into the conventional standards of heteronormativity. An older white woman, with a younger native man. An ambitious female scientist, and her supportive husband.

I feel the Cotters are meant to sort of represent the ideal version of LeeGene. They're both comfortable in their skin, openly affectionate towards each other, and living their lives the way they want to regardless of what might be expected of them. They're gross and kinda weird, but so what. They love each other. Cotter herself is kinda crazy, but is still loved by someone the way she is.

Maybe if Lee and Eugene had stayed with them longer, like Cotter had suggested... In the jungle, in the middle of nowhere, far away from modern civilization, allowed to be who they want, however they want. Maybe they too would have made it, like the Cotters did.

(i posted this on tw a while ago and i kinda need an au where lee actually becomes a rat and eugene has to take care of him)

this is how it'd go:

william lee (bless his heart) would text the "would you love me if i was a rat" question and eugene would roll his eyes and reply with a curt ass "no".

however the gods would giggle because there's no way they'll let gene get away with hiding his true feelings (they're also weak to lee's sad puppy eyes), and on a night one stays at the other's apartment, they transform lee into a fluffy little rat while they both sleep.

eugene allerton wakes up to something tickling his chin and loud squeaks and why the hell is there a rat on his chest and why is it trying to talk to him? gene immediately gets the feeling that it's actually his man (he'll never admit it out loud but william lee is his man), because those pathetic eyes belong to william lee, and william lee only.

and so starts his journey as a rat owner, trying to find out how to feed him, how to deal with a clingy rodent that chirps and hisses every time gene leaves the room or puts him down. he's kinda annoyed at first, the whole situation is absurd and somehow a tiny nonverbal lee is actually more demanding than human lee.

but it doesn't take long for eugene to carry rat lee around in his chest pocket, to have a tiny plate for him to eat from and a fluffy pillow so he can sleep next to him in bed (lee always climbs up gene's chest and snuggles there because it's warmer).

when the gods decide eugene's showed lee enough proof of his love, they turn him back into a human. gene expects lee to tease him because he did end up caring for him while he was a rat. but lee doesn't, he quietly enjoys eugene's extra clinginess after his transformation because now he knows his boy loves him, human or rat, even if he doesn't say it.
