Hey! My name is René Schäfer. I’m a Futures Researcher, living in the Rhein-Main-Tanus Delta, Germany.
I’m interested in nascent technologies, artifacts from the near future & futures noir (potemkin futures - built solely to deceive others into thinking that developments are better than they appear). My work is mostly about identifying weak signals of change and decoding raw futures as well as exploring new trends and their impact on socio-technological systems.
In my academic life I’ve studied in different places Culture and Technology, B.A. (Thesis: Development of floodlighting in german football stadiums from 1955-1965) and afterwards Futures Studies, M.A., at FU Berlin (Thesis: Design Fiction).
Now I work for HYPERMORGEN - an interdisciplinary research lab for futures - and HY!, where I design and manage Research & Intelligence processes. DATAMANTICS - a data-driven Foresight-as-a-Service platform - is unfortunately on hold due to unsuccessful funding.
