What do you think of people saying that pro-shippers are all white women who want to read smut fics. There are alot of antis of color who are antis because they see pro shipping as white.
well … it’s demonstrably untrue that ‘all’ pro-shippers are white women.
there’s a number of pro-shippers who are not white - @lizcourserants , @rottenboysclub, @satans-tiddies, and @xenoqueer are examples. (I’m not sure who else is still here on tumblr arguing for pro-shipping who is open about being a person of color? there’s more than a few on twitter, tho: I follow a number of them.)
and there’s more than a few of us who aren’t (cis) women - me, for one! (anti-shippers don’t always say ‘cis’, but when they leave it off it’s usually b/c they’re more TERFy rather than less.)
I can’t speak to how many pro-shippers want to read smut fic. frankly, though: what’s wrong with wanting to read smut? if a person decides to read smut on their own, in their free time, without being coerced in any way: how is that anybody’s business but their own?
here’s some stats to back me up that probably aren’t universally representative, but definitely illustrates that those who identify as pro-shipping are at least as diverse as those who identify as anti-shipping (from a VLD-fandom-specific survey with about 2,000 total respondents):
[image ID: tweet from freetofic written on 27th October 2017 reading:
“both antis and pros are primarily white and/or US residents:antis: 65.5% white, 70.4% US residentspros: 60.1% white, 63.0% US residents” /ID]
if this is accurate, around 40% of self-identified ‘pro-shippers’ are not white.
[Image ID: two pie charts, each with 1,041 respondents.
First chart: “What is your gender identity?”
(remaining pie chart divided between 43 other write-in answers)
Second chart: “Do you identify as transgender?”
not that any of these facts actually matter, because the claim that pro-shippers are ‘all [horny, straight] white [cis] women [over 30]’ is pretty much shorthand for ‘don’t listen to pro-shippers, they’re ignorant assholes’ in shipping-as-activism circles.
still: I’d like to promote non-white and/or queer pro-shippers.
if you’re a pro-shipper of color &/or a pro-shipper who isn’t a cis woman & want me to share your username, drop me a line and I’ll add a list to my FAQ!
as to the second point, though:
There are alot of antis of color who are antis because they see pro shipping as white.
I don’t think this comes entirely out of nowhere? but anti-shipping spaces aren’t free from sin, either.
tl;dr for under the cut: neither pro-shippers nor anti-shippers as whole (primarily-white) communities are very good at defending, advocating for, or centering the interests of fans of color.
