Depending on how important or expensive you may want it back. I called 311 4 times. You should only have to call once (or maybe twice). If you paid with cash and don't know the medallion number....you are likely screwed and have to go through the long 311 wait process to see if the TLC can track down the cabbie (unlikely). If you had the medallion number (from your recept or memory) call 311. 311 will transfer you to the garage or give you the number and you can ask them if the hack turned anything in. If you, like me, paid with a credit card and did not receive a recept.... 1. get the exact amount from your bank. 2. get the last four digits of your credit card Call CMT and Verifone, they will be able to look up the medallion number and the hack's number...and you can then call 311 and do as above... If the one does not have the record, their competitor will. CMT: 718-937-4444 Verifone: 718-752-1656 These companies were also able to tell me what _time_ I paid for the cab...if you're not so clear on all the details of your evening... GOOD LUCK. Getting is touch with the garage is faster than the 2-business days with 311. **Other notes:** Apparently, cabbies may turn things into the police precincts and I called several of them. They were very nice (I was surprised since it's the NYPD) but did not have my bag. http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/passenger/lost_property_precincts.shtml Also, when I finally got in touch with the garage I told them there was a reward if they found it. They called me back in about an hour and I followed through with the reward when I was there.
