Thesis. You are in love with a girl.
Proof One. She posts selfies. Hardly earth-shattering for a society that basically lives off consumption and self-awareness, but something stirs in you. Back in the small shelter of your room, you canât bring yourself to scroll past the entry and as soon as your numb fingers hit reblog you canât quite find the right words. Your face is hot, the tips of your fingers shake slightly. You press your cold palms against the heated skin of your face. The sound that rolls off your chest is a slow laugh. Then, as an afterthought, you add that this girl is your world. Youâre not ready to face tomorrow.
Proof Two. âYou keep me safe,â she says the first time you meet alone. An empty pizza box lies at your feet, Ikea sheets draped lazily over your bodies. Youâre both pressed close together enough that nothing fits in between. You laugh, loud and clear and rub your thumb over the corner of her mouth. You take it back and suck it between glistening lips to lick off red pizza sauce, and you say, âNo. I keep you wild.â
Proof Three. In the dark space around you, and in the absence of time, when the cadence of your heartbeats drum in unison, she pushes your ribs apart to make herself a home and take a slumber on the cushion of your heart. You donât mind.
Question. Is it a curse?
Answer. Your heartbeat has a cosmic rhythm as soon as she is involved. It speaks unexpected, urgent and angry. Sometimes you think you live and breathe the same words. Itâs a gift.
Question Two. Is it real?
Answer. Your heart is strumming a lilting, unfamiliar half-beat, that skips and jumps like a broken metronome with a force you can barely grasp. Sometimes you think that love is such a flood and youâre drowning. Itâs magic.
Conclusion. âWould you scream out to the world that you love me?â The warm palm of your hand lies flat between the hollow of her breasts. You can feel the strong and steady beat of her heart morsing her love. She kisses each of your fingertips and a smile lifts at the corners of her lips. âIn a heartbeat.â
