Today I’m taking a look at Go the Distance covered by K-CI AND JOJO. This brother duo provides a soulful powerhouse delivery to the Hercules classic while the music, lead by the piano (also notable on their #1 single), creates a magical and quiet empowerment to support the message of the song. This cover is almost a best kept secret because not many know about this cover version; it was released as a Target-sold exclusive for DISNEYMANIA 4 and is not available on most music streaming platforms. 

The duo consists of brothers Cedric “K-Ci” Hailey and Joel “JoJo” Hailey. If those names sound familiar, the brothers were a part of another iconic 90s R&B group, JODECI. Making music is nothing out of the ordinary for these brothers, they’ve achieved success as a male group, a duo and musicality runs in their family.

I am delighted whenever artists or groups from the 90s R&B and slow jams era emerge with a Disney cover. I don’t know if I’ve been to accustomed to pop or rock based genres covering Disney songs, but I find listening to a R&B take of a song so refreshing and get caught up in the feel-good inspiration that comes from it.

One more week until Halloween! Today’s cover is from a favourite seasonal Disney classic, Hocus Pocus. Technically, this isn’t a Disney song, but was performed in a Disney film, so that counts, right?

Once you hear BETTE MIDLER’S short rendition of I Put A Spell On You by SCREAMIN’ JAY HAWKINS, it will bring back all those childhood feels you had climbing up to All Hallow’s Eve. We get to watch Kathy Najimy and a very young Sarah Jessica Parker entertain us as back up singers (they’re not actually singing) while Bette kills it in the spotlight-grabbing musical trance.

Fun fact: the original song was intended to be a love song blues ballad until one evening in 1955, the producer brought in chicken, ribs, and booze, which inevitably got everyone in the recording studio drunk. The original recording of song we know and love was a by-product of a good (drunken) night of sing-screaming; which was later refined, re-recorded and put out onto the market in 1956.

The OSS Architect Who Designed the UN Logo

Oliver Lincoln Lundquist, a talented architect and industrial designer, worked for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), CIA’s predecessor, during World War II and led the team that designed the official United Nations emblem.

In 1945, the US State Department asked the OSS to help create graphics for the UN Conference on International Organization in San Francisco, where the UN Charter was drafted. Lundquist’s team set out to create a lapel pin for the delegates that could serve as their official form of identification. It was initially designed by another OSS officer, Donal McLaughlin, who worked for Lundquist as the director of graphics for the conference. This became the prototype for the UN logo you see today.

The design consisted of a top-down view of the globe, centered on North America and showing all of the continents except Antarctica, with two olive branches on either side to symbolize peace. The design was in shades of blue, a purposeful choice to contract with red, a color traditionally associated with war.

The UN logo isn’t the only design of Lundquist’s around today. He also created one of the most recognizable product packages still found on store shelves: the blue-and-white Q-Tip box.

Top 5: Fictional Hangouts I Wish Were Real

1. The Sugar Bowl

Pros: After my initial post, you should know by now my eternal love for my childhood television show, Arthur. Who would be not crazy enough to go to a diner and sweets shoppe for a soda or a Big Pig for probably less than $2.50?! Cons: This is the same place the Tough Customers hang out.

2. Lou's Cafe

Pros: This is where all the cool kids hang out after school. 5 cents coffee that "urns" high praise, and a jukebox at your disposal. This is the spot where you attempt tell that Baines girls that she's your density destiny after getting a swing of your favourite beverage, chocolate milk (delivered to you by sliding the filled glass down the counter stylishly of course).

Cons: Run into your 16 year old Pops, mayhem ensues. And in the process, get hit by a car by your grandfather, wake up to the verge of your Mother wanting to go second base on you, alter your very own existence and, oh yeah, Biff. 

3. Championship Vinyl (get the title?!)

Pros: Surrounded by the ancient art of vinyl while listening to kick ass music at work every day, Barry's Monday morning tape.

Cons: The Musical Moron Twins, everyone possibly pissed at me knows where to find me and dirtbag shoplifters, the same ones who skateboard beside the shop.

4. House of Blue Leaves

Pros: A swingin' Tokyo night club, have a server that resembles Charlie Brown, live music courtesy of The 5.6.7.8s and if you're part of the Crazy 88s -- your demand wish is the staff's fear and loathing command. Cons: Post-showdown, that is one big bitch to clean up.

5. NPR's Delicious Dish

Pros: An SNL classic! I'm not a cooker, or a baker for that matter (solely because I am probably the laziest person to get to do the after clean up/dishes) but I would just to be on this radio station segment. Where else can you drop so manny "innocent" innuendos and realize the greater majority listening thinks you're having a menage a trois on air?! Pure brilliance. And on top of that, in honor of Pete Schweddy, Ben and Jerry's made an ice cream flavour to honor this genius.

Cons: The fact that I didn't get to taste how moist Pete's Schweddy Christmas balls were.
