I need to make it clear. I love Alan and Snape very separately. they are completely different to me. when I think of Snape, there’s an influence of Alan but it’s not just him. and when I think of Alan, I think of him as him, not as The Guy Who Played Snape.
my first exposure to both of them was watching PS at the age of 6. but I’ve seen Alan in so much since then that I’ve separated him from Snape. and I’ve read the books (and fanfic) so many more times than I’ve watched the film that I’ve separated Snape from Alan.
basically it’s like this
I would still love Alan if he hadn’t played Snape. I would have seen him in Love Actually or Die Hard and been like I love this incredible man

I think one of the reasons Snape fans get so aggressively defensive about him is bc a lot of us relate to him hard. we see a lot of our own trauma and unhealthy coping mechanisms in him and obviously our need to comfort our traumatised selves comes out as a desire to comfort Snape
so when people come out with (often factually wrong) hatred towards him, we take it personally bc to a lot of us, he is us
and I may just be speaking for myself here but. as an autistic woman I am often misunderstood in the way Snape is often misunderstood. so when I see people misread him, I see the same people who misread me and try to tell me I’m something I’m not. often in those situations I don’t get to defend myself, so when it happens to Snape I want to defend him. and yeah I get aggressive about it bc like I said, to me it’s personal
anyway TLDR we don’t just like Snape “because of Alan Rickman” (Alan is just a very sexy bonus)
