A checklist to see / remind yourself if you’re burnt out on editing. Of course, this doesn’t ONLY apply to editing imo if you just change some things around you’d be able to use this for any creative work. However, since I’m an editor and that’s my reach we are going with that.
Added note: I know most people know these things already but there’s a difference (to me) that if you sit down and tell yourself some of these things it’s more likely to click in your mind. These experiences are NOT ALWAYS universal and I am in no way saying they are!!! I am not a professional, either, this is just a simple chart that might help someone like me.
General:
More often than not do you have a hard time working up to opening programs or apps that are made for editing?
More often than not do you find yourself feeling frustrated / getting angry / getting sad when you’re trying to work on editing?
More often than not are your motivations within the possibility of a reward over the satisfaction of doing something you enjoy?
More often than not do you compare yourself negatively to other editors?
More often than not are you struggling to think up new ideas or self indulgent edits?
More often than not do you tend to look negatively at the edits you’ve made despite other people seeing them positively?
More often than not are you exhausted after completing an edit? ( If you take requests consider how tired you are when you make something for yourself compared to a requester. )
For people that take requests:
Do you tend to get upset at the requests you get?
Do you dread seeing a new request in your inbox?
Do you wish things like ‘Why didn’t they just ask for xyz instead?’
So what can you do?
Take a break! Trust me I know this is the hardest and worst thing in the world esp as someone that uses editing to cope with mania but sometimes you just have to put the phone down and breathe.
Stop taking requests! Just do whatever the fuck you want. If you can’t think of edits then don’t edit until you do. In turn: Turn down more requests. Only take requests for mutuals. Both of these things could help.
Hide your follower count / notes / whatever. If you struggle with constantly wanting people to like your edits or follow you then install a extension to hide followers. Or go into your activity to turn off all notifications for your edit blog.
Don’t look at other people’s edits. This sounds so mean but I mean it for a period of time I went to an alt and didn’t follow a single edit blog and eventually I got over it but when I was feeling super negative it helped.
Oppositely, Look at other peoples edits!!!!!! See how people edit! Try new things! Download peoples filters, frames and just go crazy. Try new programs! Try new styles! If you have the ability to do so then do so! If you’re taking inspo from someone just credit them!
In the end? Do what is best for you. If none of this would work for you, that’s okay! Not everything can be perfect for everyone. Find your peace and work it. Don’t feel bad for taking time, don’t feel bad for doubting yourself, as long as you take care of yourself and are trying your best everyone that cares/matters will accept you!
