A Film for the Love Children

“Psych-Out” is a beautiful film from 1968 that documents and dramatizes the life of hippies in their haven of Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco. It is a marvel to watch because though fictitious, it is a 60s film that managed to capture that brief historic moment of freedom and madness in real time, in other words, its not a period film rather a reflection of the times it was released. 

It is a wonderful oddity that seems to have sifted to the underground over time but is a more than worthwhile watch. Visually it is stunning and captures the feelings and moods of psychedelic music with a pacing and style that pays tribute to the twin energies of beauty and danger that represented the hippie lifestyle: love, drugs, violence, sex, insanity, passion all blend like a marvellous color palette, the whole rainbow whirling around on screen until you feel like it may be tangible reality. 

What is also notable about the film is the music, though the songs could pretty much be billed as psychedelic “standards” its a groovy and fun trip that has tunes by oft-forgotten 60s bands such as The Seeds, Strawberry Alarm Clock, and The Storybook. The soundtrack weaves into the film beautifully, creating a dreamy soundscape, for an equally dreamy and attesting world. 

“Psych-Out” is a wonderful and crazy tribute to the hippies, and love them or hate them, they were a generation that truly changed the world and did something. The mantra of peace and love rings true in a day and age where violence and hatred is becoming more and more normalized. This film serves as a historic reminder of what the hippie movement was about and what it meant to those that believed in its message.
