โWhat? I donโt look like someone who reads to you?โ She was teasing, of course, while skimming the menu. Pepperoni was always a solid bet, but their veggie pizza was to die for โ minus the mushrooms, because that was just nasty. She took a second to point a few favorites out, but assuring him that she would be good with anything he wanted to try. Well, unless it was pineappleโฆbecause there was no way in hell that pineapple belonged anywhere near a pizza. That wasnโt up for debate; it was a belief sheโd held for her entire life, and no one was going to be able to change her mind.
โI grew up in a pretty small town in Northern Cali. We had, ummโฆa diner, a couple of bait and tackle stores, and a whole bunch of rednecks. The only thing there was for a teenage girl who also happened to be a mutant to do was read. And now? We canโt exactly run out to dinner and a show every Saturday night, so itโs a hobby that just kind of stuck.โ Truth be told, reading kept her sane. It was one of the few things that Lorna had complete control over โ what she read, how much she read, how fast she read itโฆall things that werenโt tied to what she was going to feed the next batch of refugees when they came rolling in to the Underground.
โYou were expecting something emo and goth werenโt you?โ Again, teasing โ it was in her tone and the smile on her face as the waitress came back to get their order and disappeared as soon as she had written it down. That was one of the things Lorna loved most about this place; the staff was ultra-discreet and didnโt spend much time all up in the customersโ business. โTruth be told? The leather and the spikes? Itโs all a cover. The spikes let me use my abilities to levitate โ handy when you need to get yourself out of something in a hurry.โ Also, she liked it โ it was a cheap aesthetic to maintain, and it didnโt leave her feeling like she was pretending to be something she wasnโt. โOkay, so maybe not totally a cover. This jacket is bad ass.โ
Her face visibly fell when Rattle said he wouldnโt be in town for long. It seemed like they were always ships passing in the night. When he as in town for extended periods, she was off doing something with the Underground. When she had all the time in the world, he was just passing through. Maybe it wouldnโt be like that forever, but damn it was frustrating when trying to get to know someone.
โNew Orleans is fun.โ Lorna attempted to keep the disappointment from her voice, instead idly playing with the empty straw paper. It was wadded into a little ball, rolled between fingertips until it was tight enough to flip at the trash can across the way from them. She missed, but it was close enough to count. โIโve been there a couple of times beforeโฆwellโฆbefore my current occupation. Havenโt been there in a long time though, not since we started things up here in Atlanta.โ He would understand what she meant, she assumed. Even though the staff here was discreet, it didnโt mean that conversations like that were open and loud. โAnd itโs been a long time since Iโve been in Texas. Canโt say that I miss that one.โ
โWell, when you do get back Iโm calling dibs on some quality time. Gotta get you those pancakes, after all. And even if you arenโt a fan of musicalsโฆโ Eyes rolled, playful and not at all serious, โIโm sure I can find something to for us to do that wonโt offend your senses. Maybe music mid-town โ thereโs a festival coming up after the new year. We could take that in, if you wanted.โ
โI was gonna go with some kind of punk rebellion aesthetic but I can dig badass bookworm with extra spikes. Itโs cool.โ Itโs a quick comment said before he gives the waitress his order - double pepperoni with extra cheese, he doubts theyโll be as good as his regular haunt back home but New York was pretty much the pizza capital - and itโs said with a grin.ย โBut really, youโre talkinโ to a guy whoโs whole image is having LEDs on everything, from headphones to sneakers. Iโm the last person that judges anyone by clothes.โ It had started as an on-stage gimmick to mask the fact that in his early days the nervous excitement would cause him to glow slightly but it had bled into every other aspect of his life. It was an armour of sorts, a very easy way to deflect unwanted attention with minimal questions.ย
The wordย โlevitateโ snags his attention and, for a brief moment, Rattle contemplates asking her what she meant, then he stifles the urge. The art of asking what a mutant what they can do isnโt one heโs ever mastered, heโs not even sure there is a right way to ask because whenever he has found out it was either by accident or itโs been volunteered. Donโt ask, donโt tell. Another layer of that aforementioned armour. Unbidden, his mind flickers back to when they first met and that static shock that was far, far more powerful that normal considering it happens to him on a nearly daily basis. Something electromagnetic perhaps? Either way, it was none of his business and instead he forces himself to focus at the drift in conversation and the expression that crossed Lornaโs face when heโd said he wasnโt in town long.
There was a reason why most of his friendships, as few and far between as they are, were with people heโd see on the circuit; other DJโs, roadies, production staff, festival crew members that came back year on year. Seasonal friendships, the type where youโd hang out with someone, get stoned with them for a few nights, and then say your good-byes for another year. It seemed unfair to saddle Lorna with such a hollow and fleeting friendship, if such a relationship could even be called that.ย โSure,โ he says as the waitress comes back with their drinks and scurries off again.ย โFestival soundโs fun.โ
He pauses for a moment, finger idly running along the side of the glass to cause the sweat on the outside to run while he considers what heโs about to say.ย โYou know, if youโre not busy savinโ the world this weekend, you could come with me. See New Orleans again and be back before your uh...โ he falters; doesnโt want to say the word Underground out loud, the staff might be discreet but there could be other ears flapping.ย โYour friends have realised youโre gone.โ The straw gets removed from the paper and inserted into the plastic cap atop the soda cup with a horrible screech that sets his teeth on edge.ย โThatโs if you wanted to, I promise not to be terribly upset if you say no.โ The easy smile hides a number of sins, itโs well practiced and practically bulletproof. hiding the fact heโs braced for her to say she canโt. That heโs already weighing the fact that his and her lifestyles may be a bit too incompatible to be any deeper than the shallow seasonal friendships he had elsewhere.ย
