5. Agnes - Iām kind of surprising myself here but especially in a show that overall isnāt exactly one to recommend specifically for its handling of women, sheās just great. She initially seemed like kind of a sexist type of character, but the show never shames her for being kind of career-obsessed and callous, the Heroes have nothing but respect for her, and while sheās not a totally uncaring bitch she never becomes softened at all. Her āfuck the copsā moment in T&B2 was beautiful.
4. Lunatic - Iāve never been emotionally invested in Yuri like other fans are, but as one of the only villains you feel like the Heroes are really in peril facing and one who was essentially created by some of the Hero industryās dark secrets, heās such an important element of the show and genuinely complex. And they never caught him hehe.
3. Nathan - Iāve adored Nathan ever since those scenes where they went from saying goodnight to Kotetsu while dropping him off in such a sweet and harmlessly flirty way to angrily cussing out that giant robot thing for firing at their nice car lol. I remember one of the creators saying early on that Nathan has had āthe richest life experienceā of all the Heroes and that just checks out. The wise auntie of the group who is also not to be fucked with because they grew up without acceptance and built their own success from nothing and have faced worse than you.
2. Kotetsu - Much more flawed than a lot of the fandom wants to admit (and also has Barnaby justifiably annoyed with him more often than people like to admit lol) but thatās what makes him great! And he shows so much strength of character in his ability to learn and change and how he reacts to being called out on his mistakes or having his worldview challenged. When you think of all the pain heās been through in life, itās kind of incredible that what heās taken away again and again is just a reinforced desire to help others as much as he can. He also feels so real when it comes to how much of A Man he is, frustratingly bad at being emotionally open with anyone except presumably his wife when she was alive - he and Antonio are old friends but even with him he mainly seems to express friendship by drinking with him lmao. (Of course he and Bunny are so good together because they understand that sort of thing is hard for both of them but usually donāt need words.)
1. Barnaby - My prickly little bitch with a warm mushy center, who can be badass while being called Bunny and sporting a red/pink color scheme. š Forever annoyed when people say heās ābasically Bruce Wayneā when ostensibly thatās true, and the similarities in a show all about deconstructing the superhero genre are obviously intentional, but his character is ultimately all in the specificity of how well-drawn he and his reaction to his trauma are, and the ways heās quite different from your typical superhero character. Itās an underrated aspect of how fucked up his story is that when Maverick murdered his parents he was effectively writing his superhero origin story, having had his eye on him as a potential commodity for his business since he developed powers as a toddler. My boy was manipulated into basically everything in life until Kotetsu came along and the point is the Bruce Wayne thing was forced on him and now he has to figure out who he really is. I think it was @vraik in their episode analyses who I remember pointing out that even in the bad early days of his and Kotetsuās relationship, itās probably the first time Barnaby can remember feeling like he can openly express annoyance/frustration with someone, and that fucked me up so much to realize. The real him has to gradually come out through that connection. He has so little sense of what he actually wants for himself, of his identity outside of being a Hero, but heās on his way to figuring it out by the end of the show and is a work in progress. I just want good things for him. š
5. Kotetsu protecting Barnaby from Lunaticās attack by taking the hit and Barnaby being like š«„ Kotetsu starting to get that Bunny fucks up when he gets emotional, grabbing his hand and telling him to calm down in such a quiet, understanding way...I didnāt ship it this early on but now I watch this part and am likeĀ āWhat was wrong with me?ā
4. "You stole my partner!ā Instant classic episode OMG. I could feel myself beginning to ship Ryan/Karina in a totally non-ironic way, to my shock considering what the character initially seemed like, and this probably sealed the deal.
3. Yuri telling Kotetsu and Barnaby about his father. I'd been waiting for something like this to happen for a decade and it was so satisfying, devastating, and emotional in so many ways for this to be put out in the open, for Kotetsu to have to accept it. And the conversation between him and Barnaby afterwards was one of the most moving affirmations of their bond in the whole series, with Barnaby putting on an encouraging front for his friend even while they both know they don't know what's going to become of them.
2. Kotetsu's "death" scene. I'm a simple woman, I want to see Barnaby in absolute despair and them confessing how much they mean to each other in their own idiot ways. "You have really long eyelashes" I HAVE NEVER RECOVERED.
1. The big reveal about Maverick. I really enjoyed the episodes up until this point but this practically changed what the whole show meant in a way that truly made it better like a good twist should, while being horrifying, and I'll never forget how truly shocking this was. I mean for me the entire show is kind of in this moment. I probably wouldn't have written over 100k words of fic for T&B if it wasn't about this, Bunny wouldn't be my fave without the memory-erasure aspect of his trauma. It's good shit. By which I mean awful.
