He laughed along with her. “Don’t worry. I think I’m pretty good about it. As long I, you know, have an option for food.”
“I seriously hope you're in like, Portland or LA or some super like, Hipster-y, granola place someday with all the vegan food you could dream of.” She shook her head, “Literally, that’s the only kind of place I could see you ending up.”

Brent smirked. “The secret, Rae, is going vegan.“
She laughed. “Yeah. That’s a fuckin’ lie. Nice try, though.” Rae decided she wouldn’t lecture him about his lifestyle choices with an injured back—maybe the next time she came to visit. “Please don’t become one of those people who constantly tell people they’re vegan, for mine and everyone’s sake.”

Brent shook his head, laughing. It hurt, but he ignored it. “Gods, I was such a mess. What did you even see in me?”
She’d thought about being genuine for a moment. Brent was a good person, anyone could see that. But, Rae chose the route of sarcasm instead. “No idea,” She chuckled, “You aren’t still a mess? Okay, If you’ve figured out the secret to having your shit together at 22, please, share it with the rest of us because we’re struggling.”
brent-vale:
“Oh, come on, you totally started the apple thing,” he replied, turning his reddening face away. “We were both pretty corny back then.”
“Shhh,” Rae placed a finger to her lips, “No one knows that. I’m saying it was you and there’s no one left here to prove it otherwise.” Which, when thinking about it a fraction too long, was a sad statement. She chose not to and chuckled instead, “Also, yeah, it’s called being sixteen, it’s gross. You were skinny and I wasn’t blonde. Wild.”

A smile was on his face before he answered, as was always the case when he talked about Macey. “Yeah. We’re in love or, whatever.”
She laughed, noting the obvious, huge smile on his face. The last time she’d seen that kind of a smile had been a long time ago, too. “How romantic,” Rae paused, “I’m hoping you’ve graduated from cheesy journals and apples, though.”

His eyebrows raised slightly. “Yeah? That’s great,” he said. Brent imagined himself on another coastline, far away from the dangers and stress. There was a cynical part of him that doubted he’d be that lucky, that the monsters would never leave him alone for too long, but he didn’t bring this up. “I’m definitely not gonna stay here forever,” he continued, “but whenever I leave, I want to go with Macey.” And a few others, but he knew he couldn’t carry everyone across the country.
Rae beamed at his words, hugging her knees closer. “As you should. If you didn’t, I think the world might end.” When she thought about the last time they may have sat in these same places, it felt like she was thinking about two completely different people. What was this feeling in her stomach? Was she proud? “I’m guessing that means everything’s going great, though?”

Brent couldn’t help but self-consciously rub his arm. He laughed, trying to picture himself at college. What would he even study? “Man, remember when camp was the safest place on Earth for us?”
“I mean, when you’re sixteen, I guess it is. Either that, or it’s a hoax and a trap and they gave us all PTSD for nothing.” Her smile had a distinctly bitter aftertaste that she didn’t care about him noticing. If anyone were to understand, it’d be him. “But for real, I think younger demigods are just more prone to monsters. I’ve had to deal with maybe like, one so far? And even that wasn’t anything dangerous or hard."
brent-vale:
“No idea,” he mumbled, smile faltering a bit. “It’s complete bullshit. Even with all this,” he waved his hand around, “demigod crap, I’m spending the summer sitting around.” He shook his head. “Thinking about all the muscle I’m gonna lose is stressing me out.”
“Yeah, no kidding. I’m sure you’ll get it all back real fast, though.” Rae shook her head at her next thought, “See, this is why people leave this place. When you’re so used to all the demigod crap, doing mundane college stuff actually is so fun. Like, ‘Oh, I have to write a paper tonight? That’s fine, at least I’m not fighting a fucking Hydra.’“

He heard her voice before he saw he face, and Brent lifted his head in surprise. “Rae?” He could hardly believe that she was really there, and how happy he was to see her. When she sat down, he smiled, only to discover that it was already there. “I wasn’t thinking that, actually, but now that you bring it up I’m not so sure. Wow, it’s great to see you.”
Brent turned his body— gingerly— so he was facing her more than the fire. “I wish I could, Rae, my gods. I’m supposed to be laid up for months.”
Rae wasn’t sure who was more surprised: Brent seeing her, or her seeing Brent’s overly positive response. They weren’t exactly friends, but they didn’t hate each other, either. Amicable, was the word she was thinking of. She had to google it for an English paper a few weeks prior. But she knew enough to be rightfully shocked at his words. “Months? How are you supposed to go on runs? Or have sex? Or live your life? That’s bullshit.”

Camp was a welcome sight after a week in a dark cell and another week in a hospital. It was too bad, then, that Brent was stuck laying around instead of actually enjoying it. Taking it easy, as he was directed to do, turned out to be doing next to nothing for an indefinite amount of time. He had been back for less than a day and was already restless. How he was going to manage the next few months was beyond him.
Eventually, Brent decided that he could sit around outside, at the very least. What harm could that do? So he hauled himself off the couch, grabbed an apple, and went to the campfire. He resented that he needed to sit after such a short walk, but he tried not to dwell on it. He bit into his apple and focused on fresh air instead of the ache in his spine. It could be worse, he reminded himself— a minimally comforting thought.
Walking through camp felt weird. It felt like sifting through an old box under your bed. Even though she’d only been gone a semester, Rae still felt like it’d been an eternity. She could sleep in her old room and hug her siblings all she wanted, but camp didn’t have the Greek Life parties she lived for, and college didn’t have any sort of swords for her to train with. There were pros and cons, and she was still trying to wade between her two worlds evenly.
Spotting a familiar face at the campfire made it a bit easier.
“Before you say anything, no, I didn’t come here for you, don’t fool yourself.” Rae smiled and sat down next to Brent, smoothing out her shirt. “Though, your brother did tell me what happened, and t-b-h it feels like I caught a time machine here and not a train.” He looked like hell, but, she refrained from being too harsh, “You kinda look like you’re about to go climb a tree and fall asleep right now.”

“Don’t talk to me unless you come bearing gifts like coffee and a doughnut and possibly a bottle of ibuprofen.”
“I’ve got Ibuprofen in my purse if you want some?” Rae smiled at the possibly, she assumed, hungover Letty, “I can’t go anywhere without it.”

Vienna has some streaks of different colored paint on her bright orange CHB t-shirt, jean shorts and, even though she doesn’t necessarily realize, some on her hands as well. Walking into the Mess Hall, it’s clear that she’s dressed down more than usual. She grabbed a water bottle and a chocolate chip cookie that was set out for lunch. She was early and there was hardly anybody in the Mess Hall. She looked around and, thankfully, she spots someone. She walked over to them, smiling. “Hey cutie,” She chimed as she took a seat across from them. “You’re here early too. Any reason why?”
Rae was scrolling through Instagram when Vienna sat down in front of her. She liked Vienna, they seemed to have a lot more in common than she and her other sister ever did. “Hey to you too,” She grinned, motioning to her smoothie, “I was done working out a little early, I didn’t really feel like going anywhere else. Also, it’s so much nicer being here and eating when it’s not crowded with everyone yelling over each other.”

It had been so long since they had a normal, not-awkward conversation, Brent was surprisingly warmed at Rae’s presence. He laughed, leaning back in his seat. “Oh gods, I forgot about that. Back when I had the worst diet and barely ate like, ever.”
“We were, like, a capital ‘M’ Mess.” Rae waved her hand as if all of this was old news, which, it kind of was, “You barely ate and lived in the forest, I thought I could raise a stray chicken and had a cupcake addiction. I’m truly amazed that like—” Putting down the blueberry between her fingers, she began to count them, “—Jesus, five years later, we turned out to be somewhat normal human beings.”

“I think Macey’s doing some Christmas stuff right now, she told me it was top secret.” He shrugged. “So I made some lunch.”
“Ah,” Rae nodded in understanding, “The dreaded First Christmas Together, scary shit right there. What’d you get her? Or, is that top secret, too?” She paused. At the mention of lunch, her mind couldn’t help but flashback. Normally she’d keep the thought to herself, but, Rae decided it'd been far more than long enough, jokes were completely acceptable. “Oh my god, wait, remember the time I made that like, wicked big bowl of spaghetti and I literally sat here and wouldn’t let you leave until you ate it all?”

Ashton hugged Rae back. “Great,” Ashton replied. “I missed camp though. It’s a bit boring at home, I have no other siblings besides you guys so the house is so quiet.”
“You really prefer our loud asses to a quiet house?” She joked, “Well, I’m sure a bunch of cabins will be throwing Christmas parties, so you’ll get your fill of camp real quick.”

At the mention of finals, Hazel groaned and rolled over on her bed, bringing the phone with her and covering her eyes with her free arm. “I only have one left but I feel like I’m barely surviving. I just want to sleep and not have to think of another formula for a week.” Moving her arm away, she smiled again at the phone. “But I actually have free time for what feels like the first time this week, so I wanted to see your beautiful face.”
Rae put a hand over her heart and gasped, “Well, I’m honored to have such a privilege. I know you could be doing so many other intellectual things.” She sat up off the yoga mat and moved over to her bed, “Are you going home for break? Because if that’s the case we better be having a friend date and/or sleepover.”
