Hi! I struggle a lot with walking and running due to a back injury, but I know I need to lose weight to help my other chronic pain conditions. I was wondering if you had any suggestions for exercises that someone with chronic pain could do?
Hello!
With the mention of running and walking being a struggle, the first thought that comes to my mind in terms of exercises that would help is swimming/water aerobics. Swimming is a fantastic cardiovascular exercise, and it's less stress on your joints than walking/running may be causing. You can even find gyms with indoor pools if the weather isn't so great to swim outside.
I do want to suggest other exercises, as well, though, to perhaps help manage your pain so walking is less of a struggle!
The first pain management exercise I want to suggest is yoga and stretching. Depending on exactly where the pain is and the state of injury, you may even be able to alleviate some of the pain through certain stretches or poses. Proceed with caution on this one, though, because some yoga poses can be a little extreme. Consult your doctor on this option, and see if they know any qualified yoga instructors that can work with chronic pain issues.
Another one that you may need a doctor's rec (and definitely need a qualified instructor) on is Pilates. This one can also be a great option, as it helps improve core strength, stability, posture, balance, and, as found in a 2015 study, reduces back pain more than any other intervention that uses minimal exercise.
The final one I want to suggest is strength and resistance training. DEFINITELY talk to your doctor about this one, and DEFINITELY ask if they know any good, qualified personal trainers with experience in helping chronic pain patients. As intimidating as I probably made this option sound, done right, it can be great for strengthening muscles around your joints so there is less pressure on said joint when used. And, to maybe even take a little extra fear off, strength training doesn't necessarily involve big, heavy weights either, so you don't have to worry about going in and being expected to bench press weights bigger than your head. You can use your own body as weights and reap the benefits.
I hope this helps, whether you go with any of these I listed or if any of them give you a good idea on what you feel is right!
