Galra headcanons except I don't know the first thing about anatomy and biology.

They have thicker skin that is incredibly hard to break, adapted for resilience, so once it does break, it takes a while to heal. If you have a serious enough wound, especially during war, they will not take you in and will not treat you.

A different distribution of blood vessels throughout their body, a bit more sparse so that when the skin breaks they usually do not lose blood, making for a bit of an eerie sight: deep gashes with nothing coming out. They do have another, slightly different bodily fluid that flows out and over wounds for an alternate and thicker version of human scabs. As stated before, their thick skin takes a while to regenerate, so this is necessary to avoid infection.

Due to the thick skin (and different pain receptors) Galra are a lot more numb to pain, and can take more hits, cuts and jabs than a human. This makes children much less fragile, and rough play, much more casual.

In the past, Galra had much thicker and stronger teeth as they are a primarily carnivorous species. But, mirroring humans, those grew weaker and more brittle over time with all the inventions and tools that made their food easier to chew and took away the need to split bone and muscle. A Galra with damaged teeth is seen as a disgrace, so, especially with age and especially influential, people, get metal replacements. They don't have a solid opinion on those replacements. Smooth, clean teeth will always be a beauty standard.

Their eyes are naturally adapted to a lower level of light because they slept in three shifts, one in the morning, another just after noon and the last in the late evening. They did most of their business at night, but mostly utilized the hours of the day, too. Some chose to forego the last, evening shift of sleep and instead lengthen the previous. They claimed that the things you did accomplish in the day would be blurred with sleep, anyway. All of this changed with Zarkon and the war, schedules shifting to be less sporadic, and sleep only happening in the night. This is not natural for a Galra and does nothing good for their health or eyesight.

Because they did do things throughout the day, and because they had meetings and arrangements with other species, they had to face light. For these occasions, the Galra could rely upon a film of sorts stored beside the eye, which wrapped overtop and muted the level of brightness, similar to Human sunglasses. Over the span of Zarkon's rule, this film became one with the eye, due to the conditions the Galra faced. In the past, the film being raised was a gesture of disapproval, essentially saying 'I want to see less of this', but fell out of use for obvious reasons. Some older Galra still squint/close their eyes with the same meaning.

Showing displeasure, anger, disgust and similar emotions when you felt them was incredibly important to the Galra, expressing them proof that you were honest and true to yourself, not making anything seem more pleasant for other people, like some other species did. So was being to the point and not spinning a hundred thousand words around their true meanings. This made those aforementioned species perceive them as violent and uncivilized, making it easier for Zarkon to spread more fear, and for the young Galra themselves, to believe the war to be their true purpose in life.

Galra are naturally strong-willed and would not easily back down. This is because of how well their prey adapted for its own survival, and how their persistence became vital. This translated into day-to-day life, and their belief that one should put their all into any given action, for the chance it goes right. It was primarily based on hope, but has since been twisted around into another tool of war, birthing the motto: "Victory or Death".

Similar to teeth, claws used to be stronger. Galra of the past would carry around extremely personal, claw-curved blades to use in the place of their ancestor's natural weapons. Usually it was more than one, hidden across their person in case something happened to the other. They were also personalized by pattern, hilt, thickness and length. This fell out of fashion, as Zarkon's soldiers usually carry blasters and big swords, but the importance of this old practice was not lost on all modern Galra.

Yes yes I LOVE angst !! Typically with a happy ending… almost every angsty things I think of/write has some sort of happy ending. I just think that even if the world can be cruel, it’s more satisfying for everything a character has been through to pay off !

I don’t have a whole lot to yap about today! Just some touch ups! But yeah, the theme of people leaving Keith … hence the abandonment issues … I love making it strong. Of course starting with his mother ! As you said, he was probably told that she loved him and that she just had to leave. Doubt he believed that once he was an angry, grieving teen. Then his father left him, too. People keep leaving, and it’s of course out of his control, but I feel like he definitely still finds a way to blame himself.

He was then of course put in foster care, which is its own whole thing of people giving him hope and then giving him up… but that does imply that there was nobody next of kin to take him in! Now I feel like his father reads as an only child? So I don’t think Keith would have any aunts or uncles, but I feel like he’d obviously have grandparents. I’m thinking maybe one of them died, and the other was probably put in a nursing home, so really neither of them could take him in, but to him? That still probably felt like abandonment, and the pattern continuing. Especially if he believed his mom died. (And if there's a reason I'm still alive, when everyone who loves me has died… I’m willing to wait for it 🥹)

And yes I’ve seen Heath!! It’s def a better name and kinda cute cause … Krolia … Heath … Keath … their son’s name is practically their ship name !! But the only issue with Heath is that when I hear/see it I think of Heith 😭 which don’t get me wrong ! As a multishipper I quite like Heith. It’s just a bit distracting and funny to think about !

Ooo! Yeah again to clarify I have nothing against Korean Keith headcanons !! I think they’re fun, and again, I don’t think it entirely matters as long as he’s being portrayed as Asian ! (Technically it’s not canon so ig he could be a rouge white boy… but him being in the Dreamworks AAPI heritage month video … again it just feels wrong to NOT have him be Asian at all)

And YES!! Broganes with Keith seeing Shiro as a father … ough . The clothing detail is one of my favorite things . People with dead loved ones typically gravitate towards their clothes since they still smell like them and everything… so for Keith to be willing to give up his father’s clothes for Shiro … that’s so important to me . And yes!! Shiro listening to the same music as Keith’s dad . I just think he’d have a lot of similarities . He taught Keith cool risky tricks on a hovercraft thing ?? Similar vibes to my Keith’s dad just giving him a gun . (You should 100% make that fanfic scene trust trust…)

I also definitely feel like Keith accidentally called Shiro “dad” at least once . And then got super embarrassed . I also love the idea that since the Garrison functioned somewhat like a normal school, they maybe had a home ec class where they made kids make Father’s Day/Mother’s Day cards for a grade … and Keith made one for Shiro . He played it off as a “it doesn’t mean anything it’s just bc I don’t have anybody and I’m being forced to do this” but Shiro kept it and put it on the fridge in his apartment . Cried over it once maybe .

The lion thing reminds me of a post/fanart I saw once!! I tried to dig through my reposts for it but couldn’t find it 🥹 it was essentially the whole thing with Keith’s dad dying to fire and Keith flying the lion linked to fire … alongside another parallel with Keith flying the black lion, linked heavily to space more so than the other lions, which took Shiro from him twice … ough . It was fire . (Literally. Haha . Sorry.)

hiii. Same here, although I'm pretty sure most of my earliest writing and stories all had horrific endings. Uh. 👍.

That's a good way to explain it. The way I have, in my head, is that his father never let his family meet Keith, because then they would ask about his mother, and might even notice that something is wrong and not human about his child. And maybe they just had a somewhat strained relationship (also he didn't tell them he had a kid with a literal alien, for good reason. And by then it would just be awkward). Then, they weren't asked to take care of him, because his dad didn't get any documents done, so legally speaking, Keith doesn't really exist and the authorities aren't aware of his living in the shack.

He might have forged a couple things to get Keith into school, and that was a bit of a mess, and in the future, foster homes and orphanages had a lot of trouble with him, having to finally try make those documents and assuming he came from some terrible home. That's enough of a hassle that they don't end up really looking for any of his relatives, after asking him, and him answering that there was only his dad. Who is obviously dead.

I was thinking the same thing about Heith/Heath while writing out the response, but forgot to say 😭. Along with the fact that I once read a fanfic where Keith listened to Ed Sheeran, full blast. (Give him a shirt that says rogue white boy)

Imagine the people that would come to clear out Shiro's stuff, after he's been declared dead long enough. And them just finding that card, stuck to the fridge and slightly dusty at the corner that got bent. Them having to throw it out. Saying something about not knowing Takashi Shirogane had any kids. Just. ☹️.

I saw that, too. Scrolled for half an hour trying to find it just now, but it's like it vanished. It's good tho, evokes emotion. And ofc! It took a bit of time, but I hate ignoring people.

Hihihi I’m back already !!! Woohoo!! I may become a regular … it’s quite likely …

So since you do keep saying we’re free to yap about hcs I will be letting loose! I predict this will be long . I usually say “I’ll try to keep this short” or “I hope this isn’t too long!” And then I end up writing a mini fanfic … so … fair warning !

The first hc (or more so collections of hcs related to the same topic) I’ll be yapping about is something I think there’s a severe lack of in canon!!

Keith’s dad!

The only things we really get about him are that he’s a firefighter and he died… yeah, we get to see him in the BOM episode, a flashback sequence, and Keith at his grave twice… but I just wish they really played into his grief more, as I think losing his father really affected who he became WAY more than his mother abandoning him (which canon pushes onto us. Yeah, I think it had to do with his abandonment issues… but let’s face it he never knew her … so I don’t think it had a HUGE effect on him growing up.)

For starters— names! I know the fandom uses Tex… I hate it . Come on . We couldn’t have done something like Austin?? Dallas?? Capitals of Texas rather than just Tex ?? 😭

Fun fact!! His dad has a canon name in Voltron Force (2011) !! It’s Kenneth!! Yay!! Not the best name, but I think it works well with Keith and Krolia also having names that start with K. Plus, it’s semi canon! If we’re using Keith’s last name from other variations of Voltron, why not throw his dad in the mix? I personally use it !! He probably went by Kenny or Ken rather than his full name … for consistency though I’ll probably refer to him as just “Keith’s dad” throughout this.

Another little thing— I personally hc Keith as Japanese !! (Half technically since his other half would be Galra ?) The Devil’s Due Comics (2011) make him half Japanese and half Chinese… but that’s difficult to do with a character who’s half alien . Since his Japanese heritage is from his father in that, I stuck with that for him as a personal hc ! In modern AUs I compensate by making Krolia Chinese :3 (since in a modern normal setting she obviously can’t be an alien) I know a lot of people hc him as Korean due to his actor, which is fun !! I just personally don’t see it, considering Kogane is a Japanese last name. (Even though VLD never confirms half of their characters last names… sticking with Kogane since it’s consistent throughout other versions) He is 100% canonically Asian to me, though !! Regardless of specifics . The Dreamworks AAPI video practically confirms that he’s Asian !!

That sorta brings up the first hc I have!! Hoping this won’t be too long … ough it’s looking long . I predicted right . But I obvi think Keith’s dad taught him how to speak Japanese ! It’s just that after he died, Keith didn’t have any use for it . He tried to speak it to himself to keep consistent, sometimes running away from his foster care placements to visit his father’s grave just to practice, but years in the system made him rusty… until Shiro showed up !! He re-taught him some things, and Keith finally had someone to speak Japanese to once again !! He feels like he’s honoring his father so it makes him happy 🥹 Broganes has my whole heart . You’ll learn fast about me that they worm their way into everything and anything I do .

Another hc I have is that I feel like his father built the cabin in the woods that Keith lives in prior to s1/the one that he was raised in! I feel like this is implied since it’s just a random cabin in the desert, but I always like clarifying cause I think it’s cutesy!! While they def went into town for most of their groceries, I like to think they also hunted !! It’s ofc the south (I believe the Galaxy Garrison is in Arizona ? According to some cool people who calculated a bunch of maps in the show it is !) so idk … guns n’ shootin’ stuff amiright?

I also think Keith’s Galra side got a kick out of it! Predator instincts and whatnot . And yes his dad totally just gave his half alien like seven year old child a rifle. Why not! I don’t think Keith was the best with a gun though . He probably scared off more than he actually shot by misfiring … but whenever he actually got something his dad absolutely hyped him up to the max . He was his number one supporter 🥹

As for how he died specifically? Obviously running into a burning building as canon says, but my personal story includes him running back in the save the family’s dog ☹️ the roof collapsed, and the dog managed to wiggle free and get out, but Keith’s dad obviously didn’t make it.

I like to think Keith was mad at his dad for a while. Mad that a stupid dog was more important than staying safe and returning home to him. Obviously he was only nine, and they didn’t really have any pets when he was growing up, so he didn’t fully understand how much a pet could mean to an owner until he met Kosmo and everything clicked. I think that’s really when he became fully at peace with his dad’s death, after being angry and upset for so many years. As I said before, his dad’s death was something that really changed him to me. That and being in foster care for … well I hc him as being fourteen when he joined the garrison so … five years!

Just to finish this up because it’s getting WAY too long— I like to think Keith’s dad was in the military (army specifically) for a few years prior to actually meeting Krolia and becoming a fire fighter ! His family was low on money, and he never felt he was college bound. He more so wanted to help people as soon as possible, hence becoming a firefighter later on. So, he went into the army for the experience and also of course the money. Because of this, he of course would have a military dog tag! One of my ultimate favorite small hcs is that Keith keeps it on a chain necklace under his shirt at all times :3 The leather gloves he wears are also his father’s . It makes him feel like he’s still holding his hands . Aw so cute !

Because of his father’s military status, I also hc that Keith, while trying to conspire about what happened to his mom, assumed she was also in the military and died, since VLD mentions WWIII at some point. That, or she straight up left him. (In most of my modern AU’s the explanation for Krolia is the former!)

One other small thing— people always write Keith as loving emo music… which yeah. I can’t deny . As a PTV lover Keith is also 100% one . I project that onto him bc SO many of their songs are perfect for him … I also think his dad loved a lot of classic 80s rock, plus some metal and stuff ! (I know Voltron is futuristic but shh…) so I think Keith would also like that kind of stuff too ! Let the guy expand his music taste past “I’m sooo emo!”

All of this would be canon in my rewrite thing ! One of my biggest issues with VLD is that I feel it doesn’t flesh out characters and their backstories enough, so I definitely try to focus on family members and small details to make them all feel real! Keith’s probably the one I’ve done this with the most…

Long texts are quite literally (get it?) the opposite of a problem for me. Especially when it has to do with something I like. So this is quite pleasing 👍

Keith's dad. Honestly, yeah. Keith spent all of his early childhood with him, and though I get that grief affects everyone different, there could have been more about that. Maybe he really internalized the fact that she left so soon, with (presumably) no explanation, maybe this was really a sore point for him because of how he saw people around him with their own mothers. And maybe it was easier to cling onto something from the past and not the fresh death of his father, which would be difficult to process as a child. Or understand, at all.

Maybe he was afraid, in the back of his mind, that his dad would also leave, because he was told that his mother loved him, and she still vanished. And this was just like that. Maybe he couldn't handle the thought that the one person who loved him could really die, that instead this was a pattern. All just maybe's tho 👽

It honestly irks me a bunch whenever I see someone refer to him as Tex. Hi guys, my name is Ohio. ??. I've also seen Heath, which is marginally better, though I've not the faintest where that comes from. Have not researched any of the older Voltron things. (I imagine 'Keith' was chosen as a humorous continuation. The K family 💔.)

Ok, but normal modern setting where Krolia's still an alien, and goes off because of some Galra thing about raising kids, thinking that to be the same with humans.

I'm actually one of the people who hc him as part Korean, the surname coming from some distant Japanese relatives who then moved to Korea. Tho Idk the logistics of any of that.

The speaking Japanese with Shiro thing is cuuuute. Along with the later point of his dad liking older music, which I personally hc Shiro to also do, I feel like Keith stuck with him because he was kind of reminiscent of his father. Especially when he was a bit younger. And then, when Shiro crash landed in ep 1, Keith gave him his father's old clothes. Which was all he had, and reminded him of all the times he'd compared Shiro to his dad. (From behind, he could almost pretend it really was his father)

Yesssss. His dad genuinely just diy'd that. One of those yt videos where the guys build a whole mansion out of nothing. Whatever family he had probably discouraged him from doing so, but he still ended up living there.

Hunting would be really fun, especially if that came up when the Paladins were stranded somewhere and he suddenly knew all the rules of how to approach prey. It also reminds me of a fanfic scene I ended up scrapping, where Keith's dad lets him play with his gun, and when Krolia says something about that being dangerous, Keith's dad counters that she allows him her knife all the time. (Baby Keith really likes that knife, which is why she ends up leaving it for him)

Keith being a bad shot will always be canon. Maybe at most, he could throw a knife here or there but it wouldn't be with too much precision. As for the dog thing I 😭😭😭😢😭😭😭😭😢😭😢☹️??. (Isn't it funny that Keith ended up piloting basically the Fire lion??? Wouldn't it be funny if he felt himself to be that fire whilst he flew?? If he despised how he lived for that?)☹️

Keith would probably kinda hate the military. For taking his parents from him. Him seeing Zarkon's forces and thinking of his parents. Of his mom. Thinking of himself as the child that gets left behind while their parents expire out here, him taking part in their death. But there's no other choice :(

"aw so cute" u mean heart wrenching. ☹️ Ptv mention tho (props and mayhem is forever stuck in my head.) uh. Keith listening to all the music his dad liked and trying to remember his face clearly, even as it gets blurrier every day.

Anyway. Hard agree. Voltron is one of the many shows that has more flashy fights and constant explosions than an in depth explanation of who the people exploding each other actually are, and what they want.

Hihi!! Okay so I don’t wanna be weird but you seem so cool !!! I saw your blog a while back when I first finally got back on Tumblr, and I felt connected to you as a fellow aroace minor who loves Keith !! However I was still in my awkward phase and decided to not do anything about it at the moment .

Until today, when I was looking at this other persons blog, because they kept reblogging my own reblogs almost instantly after I made them, and I wanted to see if I was special or if they did it for anybody else. I stumbled upon your ask there, and clicked your name tag and read your pinned and was like “oh my god . It’s them .”

So now I’m finally reaching out to say hi! As an anon because I’m still shy and I like being mysterious 🥹

A few little things about me ,,, I love Voltron! Who could’ve guessed! I love analyzing things in the show and have looked back on soooooo many episodes just to pick out little things I didn’t notice before ! I’ve also watched so many analysis videos on YouTube . I also love making little AUs in my head !! (I have multiple AUs within the whole premise of a modern AU. And also eight whole crossover AUs in my notes app. Plus more in my head hahaha.)

I have a loosely put together idea for a whole Voltron rewrite that I probably won’t do anything with?? Well I may make an actual multi series rant about it on TikTok or I’ll just post about it on my account on here … which I really need to use more for actual posts my account is just 90% reposts . I need to lock in .

Also your last post was so real… I love angry Allura!! Let her be angry !! Let her be rude !! Let her have flaws !! The hating Keith arc should’ve been longer!!! She was such a poorly written character (still a good one despite everything…) and she deserved to have way more emotions than the writers let her have . I could fix her in a rewrite let me into the writers room .

Imagine if Allura was allowed to snap at everyone and be completely unfair to Keith after The Reveal, and be fully selfish and greedy and gossip too much with the mice, sending them out like spies and invading everyone's privacy under the pretence of keeping the castle safe.

Imagine if she was allowed to be violent and make terrible decisions while understanding them to be terrible because she really is smart. Imagine if she was allowed to hold dumb grudges while remembering all she was taught as a princess and leader, going too far all the time and letting things get bad.

Imagine if she could just be completely furious with her father and his decisions, imagine if she never ever forgave him, if that ruined her memory of him and she let it. Imagine if she was allowed to get into arguments with Shiro and be annoyed at him and his demeanour, how distant he let himself be for the sake of calmness. If she was allowed to yell at the Paladins for being childish when the whole universe is at stake.

Imagine if she was allowed to get into a relationship with Lance just to feel something, if she knew what they had wouldn't ever work but would still agree to it just because, just because they're at war and she never would get a chance to be with someone that fit. And he flirted with her, wanted something, and she's angry and confused and imagine if that wasn't forever held against her because she was allowed to make mistakes, have flaws.

And imagine if having those flaws didn't cancel out all of her good parts, all of her parts that are kind and considerate and always standing up for every culture and child and peoples attacked, driven out of their homes. Her diplomacy and her jokes and determination to right the universe, her unyielding hope that this can be achieved and her deep love for the world. For her home, for her tradition and for Coran and for the Paladins. How much she entrusts in them despite their being children.

Fully agree. People neeeeed to start realizing that mental illness can and will affect the way u interact with people, for the worse. A character doesn't have to be cartoonishly evil to show abusive behavior towards their loved ones, and that doesn't exclude a parent towards their child. Seeing just how much both Krolia's, and Keith's, now, lives have revolved around war and literally killing people, you can't tell me that they're fully healthy, mentally. And that doesn't make them bad, that just makes them people.

Obviously neither of them will act very nicely towards each other all the time, and obviously neither will have very healthy or direct communication. They'd fight, they'd probably call each other things and they'd split up. Both would probably regret that, while still being furious at each other.

Having a child involved in the same war you're fighting would be extremely difficult, because Krolia, as a parent, would want to keep Keith out of it and Keith, as the person he is, would see that as belittling. As treating him like a child, and so he'd go out and do dangerous stunts to show his mother he's capable and she'd only get more angry, knowing he'll probably run the moment she turns her back. I imagine she could lock him in a room or something similar, while out on a mission. And then she'd get injured and delayed and uhh. He'd figure his way out of the locked space, thinking she had left forever. And run somewhere.

Getting off track. Krolia would see herself, especially when she was younger, in Keith and that would scare her because she remembers all the absolutely wild things that led her to where she is now. She wants to keep him safe, desperately. To keep him from getting her own scars. So the same acts will read as protective to her, and limiting to him.
