PULAU SERANGOON / CONEY ISLAND
Pulau Serangoon (or, Coney Island) was an island off the coast of Punggol, in the North-East Region of Singapore. The alternate name of Coney Island was given by British navigators, and is an archaic word for rabbit. In the course of its history, it was privately owned by a number of entrepreneurs, including the Aw brothers (of Tiger Balm and Haw Par Villa fame), whose plans to develop the island did not see any success.
It currently measures 45 hectares. However, an examination of older maps of Singapore suggests that while Pulau Serangoon (variously spelled) existed back then, its current size is the result of much reclamation. It used to be accessible by boat, and used for watersports, picnicking or camping. Today, it is linked to the main island at Punggol, via a 100m long causeway, and at Pasir Ris. At the time of writing, although Google Maps identifies the location of the island by name, it does not show the outline of the island. Currently, there is no access allowed to the island. There are plans to build housing and public parks on the island, as part of development plans for Punggol.
