Recruits of India Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, completed the combat fitness test, which is one of seven graduation requirements, April 4, 2017, on Parris Island, S.C. The CFT is designed to simulate a wide range of physical challenges one might face in combat and evaluates strength, stamina, agility and coordination. Recruits of Kilo Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, jump into the water during water survival training March 20, 2017, on Parris Island, S.C. Water survival qualification, one of seven graduation requirements, also includes a 25-meter swim, leaping from a 10-foot tower, treading water for four minutes, swimming with a field pack and shedding combat equipment underwater. Kilo Company is scheduled to graduate May 19, 2017. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 19,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Recruits spend a week practicing marksmanship fundamentals prior to firing live rounds the following week to qualify on the rifle range. Stiwinter, 20, from Marion, N.C., is scheduled to graduate April 28, 2017. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Marksmanship instructors spend a week teaching recruits the fundamentals before the recruits shoot live rounds the following week. Recruits fight using pugil sticks, which represent rifles with fixed bayonets, to simulate a close encounter with an enemy. This training is part of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, which combines hand-to-hand combat skills with mental discipline and character development to transform recruits into physically fit, morally sound warriors.
