This is a blog where possible reasons for ships are posted. Please send me messages with reasons and I'll post them. I'll edit any bad spelling or grammar but otherwise I'll leave it as it is. 1. Reactions to the first kiss:

Another important thing is that Jordan said he wasn’t drunk, which made us realize that it was a lot more consensual then we thought in the first place (yes, there were posts talking about how the whole thing was problematic and people wrote fics about how Jordan was so drunk he couldn’t even stand up. So knowing he was fairly sober made me and a lot of people feel much better about the whole situation). 2. New York:

- Unfortunately those who missed the livestream probably won’t ever see all the Syndisparklez moments that happened that night. The audio was terrible (I mean seriously, the organizers of the event were really unprofessional) so Jordan decided not to upload his stream even though he had better audio than Tom.

Reasons why I think people ship Spike/Angel (I’ve watched Buffy up to season 4 and all of Angel, but I read more on wikia):

1. They’re technically canon, they’ve already had sex.

2. Angelus sired Spike, and siring requires an extremely close bond.

3. Throughout the fifth season of Angel, the sexual tension between them was so palpable you could smell the pheromones off the screen. Also pretty much anytime they’re in the same vicinity.

4. The director said that if Angel hadn’t been discontinued, they would have developed Angel’s and Spike’s relationship and made it slashy.

5. They’re both vampires. They’re both immortal and neither is food for the other. So they have each other for comfort when they feel alienated from humans and when their human friends die and they feel lonely.

6. They’re both bisexual. Bisexual people need to be shipped more often.

7. There’s the whole blonde/brunette trend, which is intensified because Spike purposely bleaches his hair white.

8. During the sixth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Spike gets his soul back, making him and Angel the only two vampires with souls in the world. Only they can actually understand each other’s situation, where they’re physically vampires and yet morally conscious.

9. Vampires are a turn on.

10. Both Spike and Angel are aggressive and violent. The idea of them bringing those traits into the bedroom turn people on.

Reasons why You’re Right, It Is a Larry Blog thinks people ship Larry Stylinson (Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson from the band One Direction):

1.  Larry made me believe that no matter how much things get bad there is a person out there waiting to find you and to fall in love with you.

2.  Larry made me believe that love at first sight is possible. When Louis and Harry were lined up on the X Factor stage awaiting Simon Cowell’s decision to put them in a band they were standing next to each other and the second they announced it Harry carried Louis out ( FOR FUCK’S SAKE THEY JUST MET)

3.  The way they look at each other. I’ve never seen someone stare at another person the way Harry looks at Louis.

4. The constant flirting and teasing.

5. They care so much for each other it hurts my heart!

1. They literally make out on stage. Full on frenching and sometimes rutting.

2. They’re always aware of each other while on stage. They have a very interesting relationship.

3. They both wear makeup.

4. Heteronormativity goes bye bye out the window.

5. Brunette/Blonde trope again as I mentioned in numerous other ships.

6. They look really happy together.

7. Tommy’s in the closet about being straight. He obviously enjoys kissing Adam and sometime he even initiates the kisses.

8. No way Adam has a boyfriend and kisses Tommy like that. No way! Though he might be in an open relationship.

Reasons why I think people ship and should ship Deremy (I don’t remember if I watched the sixth season, so anything written here is up to season five):

1. They learn to care about each other over the show

2. Jeremy is Elena’s brother and since he can’t be with her because -

                 a. She doesn’t want to be with him

                 b. She’s dating Stefan

                 c. All ships must be slashed because heteronormativity is boring (I’m not personally completely against straight ships but I am kind of and I’m sure other people think like me, otherwise there wouldn’t be so much slash)- then he should be with the closest available option, aka her brother. [Repost addition - what I meant was that heteronormativity is oppressive and also that people feel the need for more minority representation. I think that’s why there’s so much slash.]

3. They actually have a bond. They’re friends. How many friends does Damon have? How many does Jeremy have? You can count all of their friends on one hand, and it might just include their family members.

4. They understand each other’s suffering.

5. Am I just imagining the sexual tension between them?

6. There’s physical affection/non violent contact between them.

7. They save each other’s lives and help each other, even when Jeremy is a vampire hunter and Damon is literally risking his life by helping him.

8. Over time Damon loses his will to kill anyone on a whim and when he’s forced to kill Jeremy, when he’d already killed him/tried to kill him/threatened to kill him multiple times before, suddenly he doesn’t want to, maybe because their relationship had developed enough, and he desperately tries not to succumb to the compulsion.

9. Jeremy kept searching for attention from Damon and affirmation that he’s cool. He felt the need to prove his worth only to Damon. There’s no one else he boasts in front of.

10. If you search ‘Damon Jeremy’ on youtube and click the videos that are scenes from certain episodes you’ll be able to see what kind of a relationship they had. Or just watch the show.

Reasons why I think people should ship Tony/Felix from Orphan Black:

1. Tony is trans. Trans people should be shipped a lot more. And in my opinion writing fanfics about someone having their sex changed unconsentually or a story where they are the other gender all along don’t count.

2. Tony is the first sexual encounter Felix has in the series without money being involved, which makes it a lot more romantic. Also the director said in an interview that they’ll probably turn into a couple in the next season.

3. Neither of them are stereotypical, which makes them really cool characters. I asked a trans friend of mine what she thought about Tony’s representation, and she said that because he’s not straight, that makes him unstereotypical. And Felix is obvious, just watch the show.

*addition for the repost - I didn’t explain about Felix when I first wrote this. I meant that he isn’t stereotypical because even though he’s shown as feminine he isn’t shown as shallow.

Reasons why I think people ship Sirius/Remus:

1. They’re best friends.

2. Out of all the Marauders, they were the only two left.

3. They’re loners and have practically no one else who understands them, except each other.

4. The Mauraders weren’t just friends, they were so close they spent a huge portion of their puberty finding a way to turn into animals (illegally) just so they could help Remus. They risked being expelled and punished severely every day (so long as they kept their secret) just for the sake of helping him. And Sirius turned into a dog, which put him in the same animal family as Remus. The rest decided not to turn into canines.

5. Proof of Lupin being attracted to men - This is a page where all quotes of their relationship from the books are listed, plus additional commentary

6. They both considered themselves Harry’s replaced parents, and acted like it. Harry considered them as kind of parents as well.

7. Their relationship in the books is a lot more developed and deep than Remus’ and Tonks’ relationship.

8. They are pretty much the only male characters to show physical affection towards each other (talking about the third book here). Harry mostly didn’t hug his men friends and neither did most of the other men in the books, at least from what I can remember at the moment.

9. During the sixth and seventh books, was Remus in such a bad state because of his conflict whether to date Tonks or not? Or was it because he was depressed and pining for Sirius?

10. The most emotional reactions he has are either about Harry or Sirius.

Possible reasons I think people ship Harry/Draco:

1. They’re opposites - opposite houses, opposite lifestyles (meaning Harry grew up in a middle class home in the muggle world and was treated as less than a servant while Draco grew up in the highest class of nobility in the wizarding world and was spoiled since before he was born). They’re in opposing Quidditch teams.

2. They were both criticized and had expectations thrust upon them to act in certain ways by their families and their friends and peers and teachers, and actually all of society in general, and this hurt them.

3. They found themselves on different sides of the war, but both had the same problem - do something that’s almost impossible to do or suffer drastic consequences. This dilemma was forced upon them at a young age.

4. They both suffered terribly.

5. They hated each other passionately and kept trying to find ways to make each other pay attention. If they had really not cared about each other, they would have gone out of their way to ignore each other. I have a feeling it was all jealousy for the life each imagined the other had.

6. In sixth year Harry started obsessing over Draco to the point where he stopped caring about Quidditch, his favorite activity. He’d follow him and spy on him and think about him all the time. His following of Draco on the Marauders’ Map is similar to him following Ginny on the map in the seventh book, when he was in love with her.

7. His reaction to Draco’s near miss with death during the bathroom scene was obviously more than just his horror at using a dark spell. There were feelings of regret and desperation towards Draco as well. Their whole hating drama throughout the years wasn’t real enough for him to actually want Draco to die.

8. It’s slash and people happily are not homophobic and want more LGBT representation. Also most fanfiction writers are women, and a lot of them get turned on by man on man action, therefore they search for any kind of gay shipping they can find (which unfortunately leads to less representation of LBPTAI groups).

9. Also I’ve noticed that a lot of shippings are between blondes and brunettes.

Reasons why I think people ship Snape/Harry:

1. Severus was in love with Lilly, and Harry is her closest replacement.

2. The eyes are the windows to the soul, and because both Harry and Lily have the same eyes, both of them have the same inner core, which is the reason Snape fell in love with Lily in the first place.

3. Snape and James hated each other in pretty much the same way as Draco and Harry did, and one of the reasons for the existence of Drarry is their animosity.

4. Harry hated Snape passionately, meaning he had feelings towards him. If I had a terrible teacher I’d ignore him as much as possible. Snarry is actually like Drarry in regards to Harry suspecting both Draco and Severus for being evil/doing bad things when there was trouble at school. In the end both of them turned out different than he expected.

5. Severus was willing to risk his life and sanity for the sake of Harry. This can’t be just old feelings for a high school crush. It has to do both with Severus’ oath in Harry’s first year to protect him, which obviously lasted longer than one school year, and feelings of some kind towards him.

6. There’s this idea that Snape was so terrible to Harry because he was hiding his actual feelings towards him, which probably started from Snape’s hate towards James but couldn’t have stayed that way for seven whole years.

Reasons why I ship Snape/Dumbledore:

1. Dumbledore is the only one who knows Snape’s story and loyalties.

2. Snape trusts only Dumbledore because he’s the only one who really know who Snape is.

3. Dumbledore told Snape most of his secrets long before anyone else because he trusted him.

4. Neither of them have anyone else to talk to except each other because no one else will believe them or understand them.

On Fanfiction

I was cruising through the net, following the cold trail of one of the periodic “Is or is not Fanfic the Ultimate Literary Evil?” arguments that crop up regularly, and I’m now bursting to make a point that I never see made by fic defenders.

We’re all familiar with the normal defenses of fic: it’s done out of love, it’s training, it’s for fun. Those are all good and valid defenses!

But they miss something. They damn with faint praise. Because the thing is, when you commit this particular Ultimate Literary Evil you’ve now told a story. And stories are powerful. The fact that it wasn’t in an original world or with original characters doesn’t necessarily make it less powerful to any given reader.

I would never have made this argument a few years ago. A few years ago I hadn’t received messages from people who were deeply touched by something I wrote in fanfic. So what if it’s only two or three or four people, and I used someone else’s world and characters? For those two or three or four people, I wrote something fucking important. You cannot tell me that isn’t a valid use of my time and expect me to feel chastened. I don’t buy it. I won’t feel ashamed. I will laugh when you call something that touches other people ‘literary masturbation.’ Apparently you’re not too up on your sex terminology.

Someone could argue that if I’d managed the same thing with original characters in an original world, it could’ve touched more people. They might be right! On the other hand, it might never have been accepted for publication, or found a market if self published, and more importantly I would never have written it because I didn’t realize I could write. The story wouldn’t have happened. Instead, thanks to fanfic being a thing, it did. And for two or three or four people it mattered. When we talk about defending fanfic, can we occasionally talk about that?

I once had an active serviceman who told me that my FF7 and FF8 fic helped get him through the war. That’ll humble you. People have told me my fanfic helped get them through long nights, through grief, through hard times. It was a solace to people who needed solace. And because it was fanfic, it was easier to reach the people who needed it. They knew those people already. That world was dear to them already. They were being comforted by friends, not strangers.

Stories are like swords. Even if you’ve borrowed the sword, even if you didn’t forge it yourself from ore and fire, it’s still your body and your skill that makes use of it. It can still draw blood, it can strike down things that attack you, it can still defend something you hold dear. Don’t get me wrong, a sword you’ve made yourself is powerful. You know it down to its very molecules, are intimate with its heft and its reach. It is part of your own arm. But that can make you hesitate to use it sometimes, if you’re afraid that swinging it too recklessly will notch the blade. Is it strong enough, you think. Will it stand this? I worked so hard to make it. A blade you snatched up because you needed a weapon in your hand is not prey to such fears. You will use it to beat against your foes until it either saves you or it shatters.

But whether you made that sword yourself or picked it up from someone who fell on the field, the fight you fight with it is always yours.

Literary critics who sneer at fanfic are so infuriatingly shortsighted, because they all totally ignore how their precious literature, as in individual stories that are created, disseminated, and protected as commercial products, are a totally modern industrial capitalist thing and honestly not how humans have ever done it before like a couple centuries ago. Plus like, who benefits most from literature? Same dudes who benefit most from capitalism: the people in power, the people with privilege. There’s a reason literary canon is composed of fucking white straight dudes who write about white straight dudes fucking. 

Fanfiction is a modern expression of the oral tradition—for the rest of us, by the rest of us, about the rest of us—and I think that’s fucking wonderful and speaks to a need that absolutely isn’t being met by the publishing industry. The need to come together as a close community, I think, and take the characters of our mythology and tell them getting drunk and married and tricked and left behind and sent to war and comforted and found again and learning the lessons that every generation learns over and over. It’s wonderful. I love it. I’m always going to love it.

Stories are fractal by nature. Even when there’s just one version in print, you have it multiplied by every reader’s experience of it in light of who they are, what they like, what they want. And then many people will put themselves in the place of the protagonist, or another character, and spend a lot of time thinking about what they’d do in that character’s place. Or adjusting happenings so they like the results better.

But the best stories grow. This can happen in the language of capitalism—a remake of a classic movie, a series of books focusing on what happened afterwards or before—or it can happen in the language of humanity. Children playing with sticks as lightsabers, Jedi Princess Leia saving Alderaan by dueling Vader; a father reading his kids The Hobbit as a bedtime story as an interactive, “what would you like to happen next?” way so that the dwarves win the wargs over with doggie biscuits that they had in their pockets and ride to Erebor on giant wolves, people writing and sharing their ideas for deleted outtake scenes from Star Trek and slow-build fierce and tender romance with startling bursts of hot sex between Hawkeye and Agent Coulson.

A story at its most successful is a fully developed fractal, retold a million times and a million ways, with stories based on stories based on stories. Fanfic of fanfic of fanfic. Stories based on headcanons, stories based on prompts, stories that put the Guardians of the Galaxy in a coffee-shop AU and stories where the Transformers are planet-wandering nomads and stories where characters from one story are placed into a world from another. Stories that could be canon, stories that are the farthest thing from canon, stories that are plausible, stories that would never happen, stories that give depth to a character or explore the consequences of one different plot event or rewrite the whole thing from scratch.

This is what stories are supposed to be.

I can’t take literary people seriously when they whine about fanfic unless they also bitch about Shakespeare just retelling a bunch of old stories and promoting his headcanons and favorite ships.

i’ve had quite a number of people tell me my fluffy, fun little romance stories got them through sad times. and the thing is, there isn’t really much of a market for that sort of thing. i’ve written original fic of the same type, and there’s nowhere to even shop it to. the ‘romance’ markets are very different in a way i can’t articulate, and everyone else is allergic to romance.

so i just give it away for free on the internet, and it makes people happy. anyone who sneers at that is just a grinch.

personally, i see no difference between my fluffy get-together story about carlos and cecil from ‘night vale’ and my fluffy get-together story about the two chefs that are original characters. not in terms of my effort and art, anyway. the only difference, really, is that the night vale fic is part of a shared mythology, so writing it connected me more to other human beings. how is that a bad thing?

The mind library

John Watson does not have a mind palace. That is the domain of Sherlock, beautiful, brilliant Sherlock who needs to catalogue soil samples and dust and 243 types of tobacco ash.

What he has is a library, and it contains only one thing, the only thing worth cataloguing. The sounds Sherlock makes.

There is a shelf for the sounds Sherlock makes on a case. The little huff through his nose when he’s thinking, the impatient smack of the lips, the half-snort when he’s about to insult everyone in the room, the little oh of realisation. John likes these sounds.

Then there is the section for the sounds Sherlock makes at home. The small morning yawns, the sighs of frustration, the hum of contentment when he’s fully immersed in a book, the way he mutters to himself when he’s working on an experiment. These are sounds few people get to witness. This used to be John’s favourite section.

But now there is a new one. What began as a small shelf has quickly overtaken a vast section of the library. There is the little gasp, the surprised oh of their first kiss. There is the snuffling of a sleepy Sherlock against his throat, the light snores and small sounds of sleep. There is the huff of breath when John manages to sneak up on him at the table and press a kiss to his neck, or head, or shoulder. The delighted hum when they lie in bed in the morning, lazy and heavy with sleep and utterly happy and John slides his hand down Sherlock’s hip, the soft moan as Sherlock’s body curves into the touch, the panted breaths as he starts to nudge John’s erection with his buttocks, the little whimpers at John’s answering thrusts.
