In 2009, I was asked to participate in a project called StreetWorks, in which artists would create pieces that would be reproduced onto banners to line Washington Street. The original pieces would be auctioned of to raise money for East End Main Street; a program that is working (and succeeding) in creating a wonderful place to shop and live on our city's East End. I was thrilled (and surprised) to be asked to participate, and I've been happy to participate every year since then, with my work being reproduced on banners and bricks along the Washington Street area. (I think the banners are gone, now, but the bricks are still there.)

This is my offering for the 2012 StreetWorks auction, as part of this year's FestivALL celebration in Charleston. This piece will be reproduced on a large, round metal sign instead of a banner, this year. The concept came from looking at neighborhoods in Google Maps and the interesting patterns made by streets and rivers. I assumed the East End was a simple grid, but found it to be much more complex and interesting than that. I knew the piece had to be colorful. To me, the East End is probably the most diverse neighborhood in the city. I represented the blocks in chunky, textural, brightly-colored acrylics on a matte black background.

This piece, along with others by Staci Leech Cornell, Charles Jupiter Hamilton, Keely Steele, Rudy Panucci, Chase Henderson, Mark Wolfe, Ian Bode, Glen Brogan, and more will be auctioned off at the FestivALL StreetWorks Art Auction, June 17, at 5:30 at the Habitat For Humanity ReStore. Ted Brightwell will return as auctioneer/entertainment for the evening, and beer /wine /refreshments by Bluegrass Kitchen will be served. For more information, click here.
