Hi Robin!

What was the publishing process like for Murder Most Unladylike?

I submitted the manuscript to a lot of agents, and ended up finding my agent Gemma Cooper that way (she was a very new agent at the time, and she put out a list of books she wanted to read, including a mystery for children told in diary format!).

She worked with me to hone the manuscript into something a bit tighter and more clear, and then she submitted to UK publishers. I only got one offer, from what was Random House at the time, so it was very easy for me to decide to go with them (plus, they did an awesome pitch and I loved the editor!). My editor Nat then helped me work on the manuscript again to get it ready to publish - I think we did another few rounds of edits, then copy edits and a proofread. I helped consult on the cover (Nina Tara’s beautiful illustrations - but the cover was originally pink, not blue!), and then it published in June 2014!

Headcanon that Lavinia makes George practice tennis with her, both so he can get better and because she likes sharing her hobby with him (she also walks up mountains as a hobby. George was less enthusiastic about trying that). George has learnt not to play tennis with her when she is in a bad mood ( he is traumatised from the time she nearly took his head off from a very aggressive serve).
