Addam, Rune, and Brand from The Tarot Sequence by KD Edwards.

Been a long time since I’ve drawn these three and they’ve been waiting for a new fanart! They hold a special place in my heart. I discovered The Tarot Sequence in late 2019 and it’s what got me back into being creative again after a long slump.

One tts thing that always makes me giggle is the de-escalation of how rune uses Exodus every book. Like, we’ve got:

Book one- after saving it up for fifteen years, Rune uses it on the big bad of the book (also one of his past abusers) and kills him to smithereens. Also destroys the entire cathedral the confrontation happens in as collateral.

Book two- Exodus has a few months of juice in it, Rune uses it mid-book to (mostly) take out a mythical creature, a billboard that gets cut in half is the extent of the collateral this time.

Book three- Rune, high as fuck, gets startled and accidentally calls Exodus up while trying to summon a completely different spell. Discharges it against a wall in a panic so that it doesn’t explode him and accidentally scares the utter shit out of Random Unscrupulous Teen.

Considering how Rune has admitted that this spell in particular and the reason he keeps it on him at all times is pretty deeply linked to his past, there’s probably something in here about his increasing willingness to use it freely instead of saving it as an absolute last resort, about the past having less of a stranglehold on him and him feeling comfortable enough to live without a nuclear bomb in his back pocket at all times. It is also, however, when you look at it in text just incredibly fucking funny. Building-leveling weapon that Rune does the equivalent of accidentally releasing on a sneeze two books later.

Lord Tower, rubbing his forehead: You mean you stabbed them?

Brand: ...they ran into my dagger.

you know who haunts the narrative actually? Rune's dad. his actions (or lack thereof) very likely shaped the entire course of the series. he couldn't protect his court and so his son is who he is.

actually I'd love to know more about the relationship between father and son. every time he's mentioned Rune either shows strong grief or thinks of him as the legacy he has to fulfill, the one whose memory he must honor. very interesting, considering the average parent in Atlantis seems to be. kind of awful. was he a good parent? he seems to have been, from what little tidbits we have of him. doesn't mean he was necessarily a good person by non-atlantean standards, maybe, but Rune never shows the sort of complex feelings a ton of people have when thinking about dead family members whom they had a complicated/bad relationship with.

but knowing how this author rolls I'm already aware we're probably gonna know eventually and it'll destroy me emotionally

Playlist Adventures #5 - Quinn Saint Nicholas

Bad brain days always call for my Quinn playlist. First, because I can always use the reminder that one of the coolest characters I’ve ever read is a little weird, too, and second because a lot of these songs are enough of a bop that they clear out some of the the static. And if they don’t? Well, at least I have a cool soundtrack.

When making this list I wanted to try to capture what it might feel like from Quinn’s perspective, and like his prophecies, you may have to ignore some things like gender or overt romanticism (looking at you, second verse of Mastermind). But some songs like Next to Normal by Lucius, Mind Over Matter by Young The Giant, and Immortals by Fall Out Boy are perfect right out the gate.

My favorite track is a mashup of several verses of different songs, but honestly, gun to my head I would probably pick Eidolon by Signal Void, which has no words at all, and is pure vibes. It makes me wonder what it felt like as Quinn to realize it’s time to leave the motor running.

Plus the not-so-secret EIDOLON reference ;)

Playlist Adventures #1 - The Principality Ciaran

What kind of friend would I be if I didn’t make good on my promise to share more character-inspired playlists with y’all? So, I’m going to do just that and kick it off with a playlist inspired by my favorite Principality, Ciaran.

One of my favorite Ciaran-coded songs is Crying While You’re Dancing by Dayseeker. You’ll catch that here as well as Titanic by Juice WRLD and Maroon by Taylor Swift. Don’t come for me - I can work her into just about any playlist (and if she’s not there, I didn’t make it).

here's mine: The Line and Routines in the Night, both by Twenty One Pilots

Heya and sorry for the late reply :) Love the songs and would love to hear more about your thought on them! For me, Routines in the Night gets connected to Rune right away. The Line could work for a couple of characters with the whole facing challenges/becoming something new and possibly dissapointing people theme. When it comes to selecting songs myself, I'm no good tbh. But there are some great playlists out in the wild and their creators might have more songs to recommend: thetarotsequence has some amazing character themed ones! Ciaran (which I somehow never reblogged!), Anna, Layne, Max, Quinn and Brand's Super Secret Country Music Playlist. booksaesthesic has a TTS vibes playlist which I really like. And my all time favourite is a MyTower themed playlist by skyline-sunset-in-my-veins! That one I've been listening to nonstop on car rides

Snippet: Because Max and I have a rule. You can make fun of Rune . . . but you don't make fun of Rune. It's an invisible tight-wire act that Max usually walks well. Today, he's getting a little too jokey, so I give him a look. He blinks, he swallows, he freezes in place. It's handled. Max forgets that Rune thinks in metaphors. Everything is a neon-bright fucking metaphor for Rune. And if you want to deal with the everything, especially if the everything is a problem, then you've got to punch a fucking hole through the metaphor. The soldier who died in the safe? Rune hasn't said as much, but I know it's his metaphor for anxiety. It's his metaphor for losing control of things and risking those he loves. It's his metaphor for being terrified of that responsibility, as if he didn't have an entire family stumbling over themselves to offer a shoulder. I will do anything to beat the shit out of that metaphor for Rune, even if that means attending a memorial for a decades-dead soldier.

I asked, trying to shake the last of the nap from my brain. Brand blinked. "Are you, Rune Saint John, currently wearing fuzzy orange flannel pajamas, coming into the field?" Max said, "Pages two to four of the babysitter instructions are all about you."
