Cassian’s behavior towards Nesta is the type of behavior ppl say eventually leads to physical abuse (although I suppose you could call the death march that).

The narrative tries to paint Nesta as the one always lashing out when Cassian specifically sets out to badger her to get a reaction (he says this himself). Now when she does return fire, he throws a tantrum every time. Everyone excuses Cassian’s temper tantrums because his feefees were hurt because NESTA SIMPLY TOLD HIM NO.

That’s the “cruelness” of Nesta. That she repeatedly told Cassian to leave her alone. Can’t have that. He wants her so he must to have her whether she feels the same or not and she must submit to him.

I can’t believe she apologized for the FAS solstice party when she did nothing wrong. She was blackmailed into being there. She doesn’t even know what the holiday is about. The person who blackmailed her to be there doesn’t get her anything and is somehow “well idc if she got me anything.” She sits alone, being ignored by everyone (except Elain). Not causing a ruckus. Then leaves. Hell, it didn’t even seem like she cared about the rent money because Feyre had to catch her on her way out. Then Cassian rushes out to badger her. Again, he’s mad she didn’t talk to him and even acknowledges that he didn’t try to speak to her either. BUT NESTA IS WRONG? Gets angry she doesn’t want him around. Says hurtful shit to her.

All because she said “no.”

And somehow SHE needed to apologize?

In the same chapter Cassian recognizes Nesta’s pain because he’s seen it before and STILL says the most hurtful shit he could think of to her.

By SHE needed to apologize? And he says “I already forgave you.” MOTHERFUCKER FOR WHAT? Not taking you home so you could fuck her? Remember in the same scene he’s also mad she was having sex with men that aren’t him.

Does Cassian ever apologize for anything he’s said or done to Nesta? She’s the only one who needs to grovel. Why? Because she told him NO.

If Cassian was another character y’all would want his head on a platter. But nope. Nessian is nothing but emotional abuse. Irl we would say it’s only a matter of time before he lays hands on her. But whatever.

@torchwood-99 Nesta has already started blaming herself for “provoking” him. After the whole “shackled” conversation, Nesta immediately thinks she was wrong for not giving in and for calling in the bargain. She thinks she needs to apologize for her feelings on the matter. Her hesitation. For not immediately falling into his arms the way he wanted her to.

And even in that scene, she again tells him she doesn’t want him around and he actually tries to fight against the bargain magic. Like???? What is wrong with him?

Then of course there’s later on when he tries to find a way AROUND the bargain.

In the real world, this type of behavior warrants a restraining order. This type of behavior is why we say the most dangerous time in an abusive relationship is when you finally leave.

Oh and of course he guessed about the bond. That’s why he treated her like shit for 4 books. Because boys are only mean to you if they like you.

We never saw nesta train her powers (that she somehow gave up and got back fully trained in cc3) because Cassian wasn’t capable of training her. There’d be no way to force them together for their “love story” if it actually focused on her mastering her magic. The only one who could train her monstrous power would be Rhys 🤭

Day 3: Jealousy

Cassian forcing Nesta’s breakdown was insidious as fuck and it perfectly explains why her self-worth has become tied to what she can do for others.

Cassian spent 5 days emotionally, physically, and mentally abusing Nesta. She breaks like he wanted her to (because she doesn’t have a breakthrough) and he’s there to give her pets and tell her she’s good for finally having this emotional breakdown. Then fucks her for a week. He’s then “nice” to her as long as she does what she’s told and what he wants. Then he withdraws that kindness when she does something he doesn’t like (explains her feelings about losing her humanity by using the word mate). By that point in the story, Nesta is so broken and dependent on Cassian’s approval and “love” that she thinks SHE was wrong for not being the MATE that Cassian wants her to be.

The hike was a punishment that rewired Nesta for the new groomer in her life.

If I was Tamlin, considering: the very girl I decide to fall for in decades ends up being my nemesis mate and also she plots my court's demise after I "rescue" her from him and I have fucking Hybern breathing down my neck and all the other high lords don't trust me and she took my Lucien in the divorce, I would become paranoid and think this is a long con from Amarantha to punish me.

I too would also give up on my responsibilities and becomes a roaming beast in the woods.

If my fiancée ditched me for my enemy, who’d spent months making a public humiliation out of her and sexually assaulting her, then destabilised my court, when she was sobbing over his dead body, I certainly would not be bringing him back from the dead or wishing her a happy life 💅

He treated her the way he shall treat anyone, as Nesta needed normalcy, not sympathy.

I've seen this online regarding the topic of how Cassian lacked empathy towards Nesta on multiple occasions, especially when Nesta, due to her PTSD, had nightmares and tried to descend the stairs to seek alcohol. - thething that literally helped her overcome her horrible mental state, and Cassian was frustrated and didn't help her when she fell down the stairs, even considering it a bit of idk karma for wanting to get "shitfaced-drunk."

This is a bit from a longer response, but this part made me especially sad and frustrated because there are so many people who think Nesta deserved this treatment. "Yeah, maybe their actions weren't fully correct, but come on, she was so irritating, I wanted to slap the girl half the book for how whiny she was" (another paraphrased thing I've seen online in different variations, but the message is the same).

And I really need to know what is meant by normalcy in this case.

Normalcy of being treated with rudeness and dismissiveness.

Normalcy in being trained to be useful, like her mother did?

Normalcy in being emotionally ignored because "she's strong and she'll deal"?

And why are these considered better than sympathy? Why does it ignore all the cases when Nesta received sympathy so well from Emerie, Gwyn, the House, Azriel, and Ember?

Or maybe because her relationship with Cassian is too charged thus he had no business to be her caretaker, and her desire not to interact with him should have been taken into consideration?

As I forgot to add, usually in the same cohort you can see opinions that Nesta didn't need care and empathy because she would reject it (as I already mentioned, it's false because we saw how she reacted to it from other characters) or that she needs a different type of love shown because she's so different from other girls like Feyre and Elain who needed softness (which is another odd thing to say), or that Nesta deserved this behavior because it's a mirror of how she acted.

And it's always sad to read them because we actually see how Nesta behaved when someone needed emotional support. In TAR when Feyre got back, she didn't tell her about her connection with the Fae, but listened to her, protected her from the overwhelming preparation for the ball, and tried to make contact by asking Feyre to teach her how to paint.

She respected the choices of both her sisters regarding their partners.

When Elain was catatonic and depressed, she was there taking care of and protecting her.

When she heard Mor's story, she felt bad for her despite their not so friendly relationship.

When somebody offended Cassian, she took his side publicly.

When she tried to convince the priestesses to train, she was ready to accept their refusal.

So why isn't Nesta worthy of the same empathy she was able to show multiple times? Or is it because people are just glad to see Nesta tamed and they never cared about her healing or well being.

I have a problem with ACOTAR, which is solely a subjective thing, and it's the romanticized military/warrior vibe, especially in Nesta's book. Because her experience at HoW was forced army enrolling, she just made it cute with ribbons and tea parties with book clubs after training 🎀🗡️📚

I understand the idea that training was the physical thing to help her and that warrior/sword training is usually an important part of romantasy/fantasy.

But how can I like this storyline if these are the lyrics from one of my favourite songs:

You may ask why I'm especially disappointed with Nesta's book in this aspect, but it's a general problem I have with the Illyrian plot in the first place. Feyre I could partially understand and wanting to physically train was her initiative. With Nesta however, to give us this line:

“And why must I train at all? I am no warrior, nor do I desire to be.”

“It could make you strong—”

“There are many types of strength beyond the ability to wield a blade and end lives. Amren told me that yesterday.”

And do nothing with it, is cruel and lacking originality. With Illyrian women, to integrate them in society by making out of them soldiers, instead of changing the society to appreciate all contributions - especially cruel and thoughtless.

Agreed. Nesta got drafted against her will and it was made out to be somehow healing to her. The framing of the training as a means to gain control for her and the illyrian women is so infuriating. When Nesta thought at the beginning of the book how her life has always been controlled by other people and how much she hated that, obviously the solution is to join the army and have your whole life from waking till sleep controlled by your drill sergeant, who is also your mate :( And those poor illyrian women, when we can see the reactions of the men to the training - they kidnapped Nesta, Gwyn and Emerie to teach all of them a lesson. Any woman who agreed to the training would be an open target and the IC has shown they're not willing to protect any of them if it means conflict with the illyrians, not even for the High Lady's sister and mate of their General.

A thing I see in the ACOTAR fandom that's very amusing to me is when people acknowledge the plot holes/inconsistencies/editorialflaws (call them whatever, you'll understand what I mean), but then dismiss them completely because "the author's intent was X" and I'm reaching too deep for picking a flaw that's literally on the surface.

For example: Velaris being the perfect city - but it has slums - but SJM told it's perfect so the slums must be just simpler houses not literal slums - but Feyre and Rhysand act kinda disgusted about the respective sector and its inhabitants - but it's not classism because they are perfect and actually help people - like buying things from them and making an art studio - and this should help people who lost their breadwinners and houses.

Another example: Feyre promised to help Nesta with the baths - she didn't - but it must be because SJM forget, not because Feyre doesn't really care to help her sister in an empathetic way - and even if Feyre did not help Nesta intentionally, she built a room for Nesta, this shows she cares about her - and Nesta kinda deserved the bad attitude because she was bad.

It's a fun game. I challenge you to continue with your examples of "yeah, this happened but doesn't matter because SJM intended/said X."

And if they were consistent in their opinion, I would not have a problem, but then despite SJM saying that at the cabin everyone was at fault and acting worse, they'll focus on two (poorly written) days out of Archeron's life and use it to hate on Nesta and Elain because we were shown how they do nothing useful. But when you point out that logically the system of their survival is not feasible without a lot of things not acknowledged by the author, it's suddenly not that deep again because these chapters are meant to be the introduction to a fairytale and the sisters also were the cardboard type of stereotypical evil sisters.
