“[Okay, it’s time.]” Is he ready? As ready as he ever will be.

“[This Friday, the project I’ve been working on for the past few months will finally become publicly available. I’ve mentioned it a few times here and elsewhere, but I’m finally ready to tell you all what it is, now that the gears are in motion.]”

“[On Friday, March 31st, my autobiography will be released. All my history, my secrets, will be open for everyone to see. It’s available in stores and as an e-book, I’ll provide a link the day of when it officially releases. Thank you everyone for your support through this really complicated and taxing process both physically and emotionally, and I hope to see you all on the other side of it. This is some extremely personal stuff, some of it incredibly painful, but I’m proud of the end result and how far I’ve come from it.]”

“[In tandem with my book’s release, I’ll be starting out on a real, proper journey with my new team- and my Rival Green. I can’t wait for what the future holds- this really is going to be the end of an era for me.]”

May liked to pride herself on being a good traveler. She liked to think she knew how to follow trails and get herself where she needed to go in a relatively reasonable amount of time.

Today, though, was proving to be her undoing, and she sighed a little as she stared down of the Kanto map in front of her. How had she gotten so turned around trying to get to Saffron City?

"Ugh, sorry Flash, I guess we'll have to set up camp before it - Flash?"

Dammit, not again.

"Flash, no, don't bother anyone! I'm so sorry for him!" she said, following the Raichu as he approached another trainer curiously.

It was mere coincidence that Red and his team had set up camp in the same area that May stumbled upon. Usually lately, he'd been travelling outside of Kanto for growth, but... Something was on his mind lately, and he needed to be in Kanto to follow through.

Red had just finished starting the evening's fire when he saw the Raichu come running up curiously. He immediately broke out of his pensive fog and brightened, and was about to reach into his bag to offer the pokemon a berry when his trainer called out.

He waved a hand dismissively with a smile- pointedly avoiding eye contact with May as she apologized for Flash's behavior.

"[It's fine,]" he signed, "[He's not a bother. What are you two doing out this way?]" The team had gone far off the beaten path, but it was a pathway he and his team knew well. Really, Red knew his way through all of Kanto, every route and hill and cave. But still, it was uncommon for others to wander out this way.

Pikachu, sitting nearby on a rock, watched Flash suspiciously. Biscuit, however, ran forward to greet the other, his shiny fur looking even more dark in the gradually lowering light. This was the first time he'd seen a Raichu from somewhere other than Alola, and he was amazed at the differences between him and this newcomer.

Jess, the crew's early threat warning, stayed dozing in the grass, enjoying the sunbeams while they still lasted.

It's not often that Red went to Johto, really. Nothing against the place, but rarely did he have much of a reason to. Very few electric type pokemon that weren't found more easily elsewhere, and he had to cross that mountain range to get there. Still, he had a lot more reason now, comfortably nestled in his PokeBall on Reds belt.

Generally, Johto did have that spiritual undercurrent, similar to Sinnoh did. Differently, but it did have that undercurrent. And so, Red explored, finding those key points. Sitting with it, feeling that energy. Letting it guide him.

He wasn't sure what exactly compelled him to climb Sprout Tower, Pikachu unsteady on his shoulder. But called upward he was, and so Red climbed. It was an easy trip, really. Hazy, around the edges, that tell-tale sign of things shifting. Really, Red was a little nervous, not sure where he'd end up. But those nerves mostly left him when he spotted a somewhat familiar face.

Red cleared his throat as he came up on Gold, giving him ample time to hear him. Pointedly, he avoided eye contact- no challenge, at least right now. He waved in greeting, and Pikachu chattered in turn from his place on Reds shoulder.

Something buzzed faintly in the back of his head. This was definitely not the Gold he was familiar with, but... He couldn't quite place all the differences from this distance.

The Sprout Tower, initially conceived as a place dedicated to the same tranquil atmosphere radiated by Bellsprout, was a popular haunt. While the monks that usually frequented the tower saw it as a place for contemplation and study, one particular ghost found himself drawn back here again and again. Perhaps, in what was otherwise a painful and peaceless postmortem, he could find some sort of respite here.

Or, maybe not, if the footsteps were of any indication.

He turned wordlessly, a single pale pinprick of white radiating from the black abyss of his scleras locking itself onto the figure. If Red listened closely, he could make out the faint sound of bones clicking as his head turned independently of the rest of his body. Shouldn't it have turned too if he was looking over his shoulder like that?

Thanks to the shadows cast by the Tower's limited lighting, his lack of legs wasn't immediately apparent, nor was the lack of fingers peeking out from within oversized sleeves.

He fully turns to face Red and Pikachu, his body slowly following his head as he did so.

Then, without warning, he steps - no, floats - into the light.

Red's body froze entirely, when Gold looked back at him. First it was the blackened eyes, but he could brush that aside. Maybe an encounter with some otherworldly thing- it wasn't unheard of for people touched by Something Else to be physically altered. But the way he was moving... Red didn't consciously hear the way the boys bones clicked, a grinding crunch almost that his body responded to. And so did the Monster.

Taking the vulnerable state, it shouted, screamed commands that years ago, Red would have followed without the ability to stop himself. Violence, anger, fear, all at once. But this was now, not then. And he felt his chest tighten, and the Monster fell silent with a choked sound. Red steadied his breath. Make an active choice.

The boy wasn't attacking, just moving toward him. Just looked... Wrong. But he'd seen wrong before. He'd been wrong before. Maybe even like this, he didn't know. Another breath, as Gold makes his way into the light.

"[Safe?]" Red eventually managed to sign. Open-ended question that could go many ways- are you, Gold, currently safe here? Are we safe to be in this tower? Are you about to attack me? Maybe it was all of those at once.

Pikachu, on Red's shoulder, watched Gold carefully, body tense and wound like a spring, just in case. The lack of Jess bursting forth from her ball to give warning was comforting to both of the duo, but she'd been late before. They let the quiet hang between them.

It’s a slow, deep breath.

Right foot forward, steadying the stance, head bowed just slightly to obscure the vision with the brim of his old, worn hat. To hide his closed eyes. Fingers close in their grip around the pokeball, and finally, he looks up. Makes eye contact.

A slow, deep breath.

The arc of the throw is practiced, precise. Over a decade of repetitive motion gives rise to the subtle skill, something only the similarly well-trained would be privy to. But the throw is exact, the entrance precise in a flash of light. Four deadly paws, claws at the ready, dig just slightly in the dirt. Wound like a spring, ready to strike.

Red silently waits, watching, for his opponent to make their choice.

Some days now, on the edge of sleeping and waking, he can feel it. A faint crackle between his fingers, a jump in his chest that doesn't quite pull him from this twilight. It fades into a low, rumbling static by the time his mind meets body again and he rises, as always, with the sun, but in the edges between night and day, he can feel it.

Something has changed, has been changing for a very, very long time. He feels it mostly when he's on that bridge between dreaming and daylight, but it's present with him always now.

Arcing between his fingers and the surface of the PokeBall in his hands.

Discharging into solid earth when he plants his feet into the dirt for stability.

Thundering in his chest when the pressure of battle builds.

But it's in the moments between, when he is still able to let go of the constraints of his consciousness, he feels it most. Sparks between his fingers. A charge running up his palms, into his spine, warming his body. It burns just slightly, but a burning in his hands is something he's long used to.

Something is changing. Something has changed.
