I think one of Kubo's truly underrated design decisions is when he decided that the captain's haori came in SLEEVES or NO SLEEVES options, and that each captain just gets to pick. Like, you can just mentally run through the captains and their choices are all very obvious and correct. There's no easy axis to explain this one, aside from "would like sleeves yes/no?" and it's such a delightfully subtle bit of character-building. This is to say nothing of the fact that Zaraki chose sleeves and then ripped them off.
it occurred to me that the reason Zaraki's sleeves are ripped off is probably because he's wearing the haori he took off the corpse of his predecessor and didn't like that it had sleeves, which honestly only adds to the character-building aspects.
Now, the only official pictures I could find of Kenpachi Kiganjล are cropped in such a way that you can't tell if he's got sleeves or not. He definitely seems like a no sleeves guy. There are a few fanarts of him that also have torn-off sleeves. Fanartists can do what they want, I kind of assume they didn't have any source for that, aside from Zaraki's haori. The guy two-Kenpachis before him, Azashiro, had sleeves, so I suppose they could all be wearing his. The problem is that Kiganjล was enormous. Like, Zaraki is big, I know, but Kiganjล was 7'3" and 700 lb. I think it's kind of unlikely he's sharing clothes with any of them.
Anyway, I think the actual explanation is that Zaraki did not actually read his captain-onboarding packet and fill out the required forms, so they gave him the default haori (sleeves) and then he had to deal with it. He probably also can't check his gotei dot death email because he didn't sign the Responsible Computer and Hell Butterfly Use Agreement, either.

Summary: ย Abarai Renji doesnโt have a fortune, but he does appear to be in want ย of a wife, at least in Lady Kuchikiโs opinion. Fortunately, Lady Kuchiki also ย has a sister, and a woefully eligible one, at that. (itty bitty Hisana Lived! AU)
Act IV: The Kuchiki entourage returns to the city with big news. However, the reaction it gets isn't what anyone was expecting.
Rating: T, for minor cussing and the occasional innuendo.
This time: Rukia and Renji reaffirm their commitment (to the grift).
Writing/Art Update 7.17.2026
In case you missed it, the big news is that I have started posting new parts of a little in love. (you can see the new banner at the link, too). I'm planning to do a post-a-chapter-every-three-days schedule, which means there will be another one tomorrow. It seems like a lot of people are happy to see it back, so that's been nice!
As far as act v, the only thing I really have left is the epilogue. It's been kind of hard to write, for reasons I'm having trouble putting my finger on. There's no real pressure, though, and I'm making slow-but-steady progress on it, so I think that's fine. It's about 1300 words at the moment, so maybe it's about 1/3 done?
(as an aside, I am pretty sure that this dumb fanfic is going to come in at jussssssst enough under 200k words that I can't just add a paragraph somewhere to get it over the line. enormously irritating. on the other hand, there's also the possibility that me or my beta might decide I need to add something during the editing stage. that would be even more annoying)
I also did a small art project this week, just for fun. I really liked the toolkit I used for that one, and I'm trying to figure out other things I can do with it. I do really need to finish my other new banner. I did the sketches, I just need to color them, which I'm hoping to do, maybe this weekend.

no no see, domesticity IS hot. how intimate it is to make food with someone, to share a bed, to brush your teeth at the same sink, to shower and use the same towels and the same laundry soap, to grocery shop and hold hands through the aisles, to be cornered in the kitchen to make out while a pot of pasta boils over on the stove. to fall asleep and hear them snoring softly and laugh at the little trail of drool out of the corner of their mouth. to spend money together and share chores and pick on each other for your weird habits. it's not always perfect and beautiful, but it's comfortable and familiar and I just think it's neat.

to anyone in the areas impacted by the wildfire smoke, my #1 biggest piece of advice as someone whos been dealing with wildfire smoke in the NW united states for years, is build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal Cube
they perform as well as expensive HEPA air cleaners, and are comparatively VERY inexpensive. all you need is a box fan, 4 air filters, a piece of cardboard, and some duct tape!!!!
i think it took us maybe a half hour to put ours together, if that, and we replace the filters every 3 months. it's really made a HUGE difference, both when the air quality is bad, but also with our allergies

where i am, a box fan and the filters run about $20 each, so if $100 is too much of a stretch at the moment, get the fan and one filter. tape the filter to the intake side of the fan, all the way around. this is also good if your space is small and a 20" cube won't fit.

I am the primary cake-baker of my household. Some years, I feel like being extremely extra and making something bonkers and elaborate. This year, I just wanted to take it easy, though, so Mr. P bought *two* cheesecake samplers from Aldi for me (so that everyone in the house could have one piece of each flavor). I love cheesecake and my standards are not high, and not-making-it-myself can truly be the best seasoning of all. (He also got me some very pretty flowers ๐ฅฐ)

Thank you!! lol, I am, in fact, most definitely experiencing the heat wave PLUS we're got Canadian wildfire smoke working its way down to us over the next few days. Fortunately for me, I have good air conditioning and a CR box and I love being inside, plus at least this one isn't going to last too long. I hope everyone else is staying cool, too and maybe if we could be done with heat domes for the year, that would be awesome.
