actually real best moment in zexal is that bit i nlate s1 where shark and kaito fight like petty children. like. shark just broke out of a hospital roughly 20 minutes ago, and kaito just got re-souled (but is still nearly dead of magical girl poisoning). both of them have very depserate reasons to not waste time - shark needs to save yuma and kaito needs to save haruto. despite that they still find time to bicker with each other. kaito is compltely unrepentant despite taking shark's soul for what ended up being no reason last time they met, too. it's just. it's Just. perfect wayt o lead up to the big end of season fight, no notes

vrains s3 is a wild ride but another fun implicatoin is that ai was always capable of That level of schemeing and having things go through. that's fun on its own but what's even more fun is like. ai had a reputation among the ignis as lazy/procrastinator, and he earned that with the humans, too. even bohman got fooled by it. the only two people who correctly realized that ai has a serious talent for schemeing before s3 were revolver (who hates him) and lightning (who may ot have but then ai turned down his evil plan so yeah hates him). it's the tweet of "only one other person has ever truly understood me and i hate that guy" except it happened Twice. everyone else gets fooled by that ai is in fact Mister Silly

on the one hand, durbe really loved every single bit of nasch that he remembers. his passion, his strong will, his strength, even his shitty attitude. you could not say we are being superficial in the slightest

on the other, durbe visibly has no idea what nasch looked like. also that he'll do the "you're not nasch. you lack xyz positive quality he had". like captures both the intense devotion but also the. comedy. possible for the ship

my toxic trait is sometimes i think love triangles are funnier than being poly would be. anyways can i mention tomoshipping vs hellshark there. durbe and iv are aggressively different people and the flavor of their ships with shark cannot be more different either. undying love and devotion across lifetimes vs a messy disaster that somehow got feelings involved. like it's "i would choose to be with you in every lifetime" vs "get out of my school". i have to imagine on valentines day shark gets a very sweetly written love letter and a somewhat horrifying puppet shark with a copy of mirror force tied to it.

Hellshark is an incredible ship because you could argue that their antagonistic back and forth has gay undertones (the “your greatest fan” thing is sarcastic but it still has a look, shoutout to iv’s heckling of shark after he got tetsuo being “how’s yoir sister doing” and “I like guys like you”) but it’s so fucking toxic for all of zexal 1 rhat it blunts it

And then they don’t stop when they’re no longer enemies in zexal 2 and it’s. Guys. Y’all know how you sound, right. And then they get one of zexal’s best and gayest duels and no no it’s fine, anyone woils knowingly sacrifice themself to try to save the other person. Same for promising to kill yourself once you’re done with your mission to join the other person. What the actual fuck was going on between them.

thinking abt aiball today and something fascinating with it is. i'd call it a strong relationship where the love is there but like. there's sort of a gap in understanding for the entire duration of the show. like yusaku really cannot read ai or figure out what he's up to until it's too late, and ai abuses that for...again, the entire length of the show. i think yusaku might not have walked into that final duel if he knew it was an elaborate suicide attempt. ai can manipulate him nearly without fail 100% of the time, it just shifts to being for love. but ti is fascinating that it is a sweet/meaningful dynamic, just...one where communication is never fully There

i don't think any sibling set will ever suffer as much as teh kamishiros but the kurosakis at least acn come close. what's worse, shun losing Fucking Everything in a way that's uncharacteristically cruel for this franchies bc none of it is undone. your home's burned and you'll never see your friend or sister again. and you jsut have to live with all that. or ruri, who had her entire world burned down in her name, got to watch her close friends turn to ruthlessness in the wake of that, got abducted, and ultimately got no justice, only absorption. like christ those two deserved better.

iv is one of the best zexal characters for...a lot of reaosns but part of it is how fast they're able to turn around perception on him. like he. sucks. for most of zexal 1. you meet him as the guy who ruined shark's life, then next time you see him he breaks caswell's arm for no reason outside of sadism in what is admittedly a v fun and iconic duel to rewatch and THEN next time you see him he's helping in the haruto kidnapping and using footage of his torture to goad kaito into misplaying. like. he seems like just a piece of shit!

...which amkes it so much better to see things fall apart for him. like wtching him break down slowly then all at once as his dad transparently tries to throw him away for shark is. oh god that's why he's like that. it...makes perfect sense why he's like that. and his start of darkness was something he didn't want and scarred him forever.

like. i really thought i'd just hate him but they made him pathetic and in doing so, made him deeply lovable. maybe a better way of putting it is that he's like. gentleman facade->sadism(that is also in part put on)->deeply troubled teenager in an unhinged disaster situation but regardless. excellent character. waiter four more servings of fanservice please

i was going to like soulburner already but i think he's made infinitely funnier if you've watched the other spinoffs first becuase like. yeah he does sort of give off traitor vibes. late arriver, inserts self into protag's life very strongly, they get Close faster than usual, seems too normal and too cheery

but like. he's not. a traitor. he's just like that. which makes all the above behavior way funnier because that was all genuine (well aside from the cheery but i'd argue that's the person we're trying to be so it feels mean to liken that to active deception). we really moved here for playmaker huh.

by far the worst part of watching arc-v is that leo akaba sort of clears the entire rest of the series for "worst father ever" so i have to hand it to guys who are still pretty terrible, just not the worst. faker may have almost got both of his sons killed (and it would've been short, miserable lives, too) but at least he like. cared about them. i want to beat kiyoshi kogami to death but at least he didn't literally name his son 'zero child' and then abandon said son (and then force said son away after he found him after the abandonment). at lesat they only caused that many problems in 1-2 dimensions and not four of them.

anyways i think reiji deserves to kill his dad (and also maybe change his name)
