i do think the concept of individual instances of male sexualization vs the pervasive sexualization of women in comics kicks peoples ass. because to be honest superhero comics have a long history of misogyny, and the way every female character is drawn as a pinup no matter the context of the panel is part of that. and there are plenty of cases where men are drawn to show off their ass or muscles, but its never to the same degree of objectification as it is to women. the costumes, the poses, the storylines, everything contributes to the disrespect female characters get in comics. not to mention, most times men are sexualized in a comic's art, its in a single panel and the rest of the book they are drawn normally. whereas with women, when an artist is sexualizing them, there are no panels in the book that dont have her arching her back or showing off her tits in some way. every time a man is sexualized its individual, and every time a woman is sexualized its contributing to a culture of misogyny

Green Lantern Anarky: Lonnie’s story

Anarky 1999 differs from 1997 because it tells very personalized stories as opposed to Anarky rejecting the idea of personhood and constructing stories in the world of ideas in 1997. Lonnie hops back on the steering wheel and anarchism is pushed back. It’s widely regarded that many of the already few storylines are not that good, but the Green Lantern plot, in regards to the personal nature of ‘99 and the mythical idea of Anarky established in ‘97, I believe weaves a complex tissue between Lonnie and Anarky.

Literally, Abberation is anti-physics, everything that our natural world is not. And Anarky has the determination to save the world from it and prove himself to other heroes. Allegorically, Abberation is chaos, confusion, inexplicability, a way to experience feebleness. Lonnie, during the events of ‘99 is rejected the access to his home, Gotham, and by the Justice League who don’t take him seriously. The only thing left in his hands, after losing his parents twice (first by faking his death and the second time by earthquake), is Anarky. Anarky believes reason and logic fixes everything, it explains everything, it reverts the chaos into natural order. (in ‘97, he held that simply having a more elevated state of consciousness, people would adopt ways of anarchism, to rules without rulers, the way of nature in a way). And in the end, physics and a tad bit of hope do in fact save the day.

The Abberation story is about how the ideology (of anarchism) equips a person in despair with means, hope, to fight it back, how Anarky, amplified by the Green Lantern ring, equips Lonnie the means to transform the world into a reasonable, understandable and livable place. And this is why it is one of the best Anarky comics to be written and a character Bible for Lonnie.

Red Robin and Post-Flashpoint: Applied Anarkism

After Lonnie was incapacitated by Ulysses (I can read into the allegory of this but it’s irrelevant here) he reverted back to Moneyspider and started slowly transitioning back to Anarky inside the Ünternet (which, considering Anarky’s otiginal allegorical nature Ünternet seems a fitting comeback), his new Anarky identity was formed in a slightly different way.

Previously, it was established that in the DC universe Lonnie could not use whatever power he is given to disturb the status quo in favor of anarchism, but for the first time in the Ünternet, he lights the fire to a new civilization. Though we don’t see anything past that for Flashpoint reasons, Rebirth Lonnie follows this principle rather than being a mythical symbol of Anarchy the idea and the struggle for it, he follows the practical applications of an anarchist society or organization. His appearance in Detective Comics is such, with that utopian commune under Monstertown. He also, correct or not, participates in organized struggle, syndicates, has followers in later comics etc. He acts more as a community organizer than 5 symbols stacked in a trenchcoat. And due to political and realism (as in DC universe should always map close to 1-1 onto the real world social order and anarchist revolution hasn’t happened the last time I checked) reasons, Anarky can never achieve his visions, but because Anarky is not about the idea of anarchism anymore, the way Lonnie gets his ass handed to him is way more miserable and not at all graceful. He’s just a punching bag for leftists activists based off of terrorism stereotypes. Then, the big, red, flowy trenchcoat also has no meaning anymore with no symbols inside so it does make sense that for Fraction’s Batman his costume is swapped for casual wear.

And I did say the new identity started during Red Robin, but Anarky (1999)’s subject matter relating more to Lonnie as a person rather than Anarky the symbol started the transformation towards a Lonnie devoid of the symbolisms of Anarky. In the big picture, from the time of his conception, Lonnie Machin went through 5 stages of characterization: Moneyspider who is a desperate child trying to find order and meaning in the world (Detective Comics), first Anarky who is theoretical and symbolic heavy (Robin annual, Shadow of the Bat, Anarky‘97), Lonnie who peeks through Anarky as the hope filled child (‘99), completely incapacitated Lonnie reverting back to Moneyspider (Red Robin), Second Anarky who is practical (end of RR and post-Flashpoint) and finally, just some guy (Batman 2025)
