Let's try to take this down. I swear it's not a cult
The yet-to-be named HYDRA operative looked around the training room with wide eyes. It was so large. She’d only been in rooms this tall for flying exercises, but this one had foam dummies and a shooting range and a boxing ring and one of the walls was lined with weapons.
“What are we doing today?” she asked the tall man she had come to see as a protector and the scientists called The Winter Soldier.
@yourenotreadyforus
“Exactly.” Winter nodded. “Whatever works best for the situation. People usually have various body ticks that give away lies but you’ll have to learn to avoid showing those.”
“Oh,” she said thoughtfully. “I will need to learn how to read tells as well, won’t I?”
“Yes you will.” Winter nodded. “Other people can lie to you on missions as well after all. You’ll need to be able to catch their lies without revealing your own.”
M16 nodded. “Okay, so where should we start?”

“Yeah…” M14 sighed, scratching at the wrapping on her shoulder under the shirt. “It feels so weird, though… I can’t move my wings for at least 6 weeks. They’re strapped so tight to my back I almost can’t feel them.”
“Better than a cone. Those are so irritating. Since your wings will be like that awhile it will be a good opportunity to focus on ground combat. You’ll also probably have to wear a harness that hides them missions sometimes. So you can get used to the feeling.”
She nodded rotated her shoulder with a wince. “I still hate it,” she protested. “It’s like moving around with your arms pinned to your chest.”
“You might have that at some point. Good to not rely on just your arms or just your legs.”
M14 reluctantly nodded. “Everything is a learning experience,” she said, repeating the words of her first teacher.
Winter nods in agreement. “As long as you’re breathing you can learn. It’s only a failure if you’re dead.”
She nodded. “I guess I should go rest now. I’ll see you tomorrow?” she asked.
Winter nods. “Yes. Stay off your back. We’ll do more training in the morning. You did well today.”
M14 grinned at the compliment, then saluted him with a nod before practically skipping off to her quarters.
Winter saluted back and headed to his own quarters. They were making good progress so far.
M14 rolled her shoulders as she read in her quarters, filling the rest of her time with further education. She had a hard time adjusting to sleeping on her stomach, but the exhaustion of the day finally lulled her into a deep sleep.
The next morning, she returned to the training room, more sore than ever.
As it were Winter didn’t need much sleep. He read but quickly became bored. In general he was pretty antsy till he’d worked out enough to sleep. Then he rested for a few hours.
M14 was late to the training session as she ran in, panting and sweating and profusely apologizing for her tardiness.
“You’re 10 minutes late.” Winter hummed, leaning against the wall of the training center. “Where were you?”
“I overslept,” she panted with her hands on her knees as she gasped for breath. “Took too long to complete my morning intake. I ran to try to make up the time. I will set an alarm 15 minutes earlier tomorrow to compensate.”
“See that you do. Timing is very important. A whole mission can go wrong based on timing alone.” He told her sternly. “Take a seat. We’re going on your deception skills today.”
M14 nodded appreciatively and sat down as she finally started to catch her breath.
“Now you’re very honest here, as you should be. On a mission though you can’t and you’ll have to do it with a straight face so that you don’t look suspicious.” Winter started. “The best way to do it is to keep things simple. The more complicated the lie the more you have to answer for and the more chances there are of messing up.”
She nodded as she listened to every word. “In the base, I must be truthful or the tests will be invalid,” she replied. “But, in the field, I must be untruthful in order to complete my mission.”
Emmett frowned at the woman and then turned to Ash. “ Mom?” She nodded, a deep sadness in her eyes. “ She’s right. I never knew she was alive.”
Victoria looked between them awkwardly. Her training had not prepared her for a situation like this. She didn’t know if she should keep talking to them, if she should leave them alone, if she should continue eating and ignore their private conversation... So she sat there, looking between them, trying to figure out what to do.

Victoria stopped when they talked and she blushed when she realized they were talking about her. “Sorry… I must have been more hungry than I thought…” she said quietly and started to eat more slowly.
Ash gave her a little smile, and shook her head at Emmett. “ its alright, sweetheart. Eat as much as you like.”
“I forgot my manners,” Victoria said as she focused on her food.
“Hey.” Ash reached over, covering her hand. “ It’s okay.”
Emmett frowned, looking from his mother to Victoria. “ I think i’m missing something.”
Victoria looked up to her mother and bit her lip nervously. “Emmett asked if I was one of your kids and I didn’t know how to answer.”
Ash raised a brow, before turning to look at Emmett. “ Emmett, She’s not a child that I trained. Victoria is your half sister.”
He looked from Ash to Victoria and studied her. “ Why didn’t you tell me I have a sister?”
“ well…. I didn’t know she was alive.”
"I was told that my mother died giving birth to me," Victoria added. "She was told I was a stillborn. They lied to keep us apart."

Victoria watched the woman from high in a tree nearby. This morning, she had eyed the fruits and vegetables hungrily and managed to pick a few ripe ones before scrambling up the tree when she heard someone coming out to work the garden. Now, the winged mutant stared in curiosity and confusion, safe behind the camouflage of foliage. It was like looking into a warped antique mirror. The older woman looked so much like herself, but there were slight differences. The woman’s skin was slightly darker. She didn’t have freckles, like Victoria did. She had a slightly flatter nose than Victoria had. Besides these and other minor differences, they looked very similar and she watched with anxious anticipation and curiosity. Perhaps she was an aunt or a cousin or some other relative that never knew she even existed. Could she trust the possible relative? Would she be recognized as a relative and be welcomed with open arms? Could she finally stop running? … But what if the woman saw her and thought she was a monster? This thought above all others kept her high in the tree, watching from afar.
Ash paused, suddenly feeling the mix of anxiety and hope that permeated the air. Someone was there, and Ash straightened. Her HYDRA training kicked in, and Ash began sending out feelers to find out where they were. When she foguredd out where they were, Ash spoke up.
“ I know youre out there. If youre here to bring me back.” She shrugged, hoping that Emmett wouldn’t get home quite yet. “ we’ll see how that goes for you. If youre not, come where i can see you so we can talk this through.”
Emmett raised his brow, before smiling. “ Okay. Youre acting weird.” He shrugged. “ you dont have to be worried. A lot of Mom’s kids have passed through here. ”
Victoria smiled and shrugged. “I really don’t know what’s weird anymore, so…” She walked with her brother toward the kitchen. “So what do you do?”
“ I go to school.” He said with a smile. Of course he didnt know if she was talking about what he did during the day, or his powers.
“oh… that’s neat,” she said quietly, awkward with her newly discovered brother. “What were you doing earlier? In your room?”
“ Listening to a book.” He said, pulling out his phone. “ its really cool. Its about a star that gives people super powers, but it turns them all evil.”
She looked very confused. “Listening… to a book?” She saw him pull out his phone, which was not a book. Maybe that was his powers? She smiled. “Sounds like fun.”
He took one of the headphones and held it to her. “ Here, listen.” He grinned, before turning on the book.
Victoria looked to Emmett curiously and put the earbud in her hear, stopping in the hallway leading to the kitchen to listen. She heard a voice as it told a story and she tried to recognize the book that the voice was reading to her. It was a strange experience for her. She hadn’t heard anyone read a story to her since she was first learning to read.
Emmett smiled, watching her. “ I have dyslexia, and cant read very well. So having audiobooks makes it easier to enjoy them.” He pulled out his phone, handing it to her. “ there are a bunch of books on there if you want to listen to them.”
Victoria blushed. “Really?” she asked, gently taking the phone and exploring through the book titles. ”Thank you…” she said softly, unsure what else to say.
“ youre welcome.” He smiled, looking up at her as Ash called down the hall for them. “ we should probably gey to dinner.”
She nodded and smiled softly. “Yeah. Shouldn’t keep her waiting.” She took the earbud out of her ear and put the phone in her pocket as she walked with him back to their mother.
He smiled, watching as she put his phone into her pocket. He had turned on a recording app on his phone and hoped that he would catch something
Victoria walked with Emmett into the kitchen and smiled at Ash, taking a seat at the table.
Ash smiled, the table set and ready for them. There was a roast, potatoes, and carrots. which caused Emmett to groan.
Victoria immediately started eating hungrily and hummed in appreciation as she rapidly filled her empty stomach.
