"The Ache That Would Not Leave"
This prose poem always seems to strike a chord with people.
āI can only note that the past is beautiful because one never realises an emotion at the time. It expands later, and thus we donāt have complete emotions about the present, only about the pastā
ā Virginia Woolf
āSo that is what hell is. I would never have believed it. You remember: the fire and brimstone, the torture. Ah! the farce. There is no need for torture: Hell is other people.ā
ā Jean-Paul Sartre, No Exit
āDo not despise your inner world⦠Our society is very outward-looking, very taken up with the latest new object, the latest piece of gossip, the latest opportunity for self-assertion and status. But we all begin our lives as helpless babies, dependent on others for comfort, food, and survival itself. And even though we develop a degree of mastery and independence, we always remain alarmingly weak and incomplete, dependent on others and on an uncertain world for whatever we are able to achieve. As we grow, we all develop a wide range of emotions responding to this predicament⦠Our emotional life maps our incompleteness: A creature without any needs would never have reasons for fear, or grief, or hope, or anger. But for that very reason we are often ashamed of our emotions, and of the relations of need and dependency bound up with them⦠So people flee from their inner world of feeling, and from articulate mastery of their own emotional experiences.ā
ā Martha Nussbaum, in, Take My Advice, James L. Harmon ed.
I feel as if my heart is like a puzzle, one you contemplate. You put it together just to take it right back apart. And then there is me, who never fails to give you the pieces.

And if youāre in love, then you are the lucky one, āCause most of us are bitter over someone. Setting fire to our insides for fun, To distract our hearts from ever missing them. But Iām forever missing him.
You are not the one he left behind. You are the one he let get away. He will have to live with the difference. // Alfa
Looking at you, like a star From the place, the world forgot And thereās nothing, that I can do Except bury my love for you
I feel for him I do, but still he is not you.

Red
Like it, you were blind to me I tried to show you through my eyes Yet still you still couldnāt see It has stained my skin and refuses to fade Itās vibrancy; uncontainable, yet nothing but grey to you I scrambled for the words, as if I could arrange them in such a way that it would make it visible. -You didnāt want to see I failed to notice that you didnāt want to know red, that you preferred to see its dull alternative I fear you were afraid that it would steal you away Knowing it would make you vulnerable, as the start of repetition of the past You protect yourself, involuntarily from this particular light As if it, like the last color you let in, would betray you all the same. Unlike that particular color, red is so deep and vast that it is both past and present, for it never fades. I am a promise. I am red.
