MOTORING CHIC TAKES TO SALISBURY’S CATWALKS FOR FASHION WEEK

Westover Group is supporting Salisbury’s second Fashion Week (27th September – 4th October), helping local fashionistas to check out the latest in motoring chic without leaving the catwalk. As one of the event sponsors, Westover’s seven Salisbury showrooms will be parading some of the latest models in its line-up, flaunting cutting-edge cars from across the Group’s autumn and winter ranges.

Westover – which celebrates 90 years in the motor trade next year – currently operates from 26 locations across Dorset and Wiltshire. The Group has grown significantly in the last two decades, gradually expanding the number and range of manufacturers it represents, incorporating several struggling businesses over the years and thereby protecting local jobs.

The company was particularly pleased to be able to bring the Peugeot brand back to Salisbury earlier this year, once again offering the city’s Peugeot owners a specialist local dealership and workshop. Hyundai followed hot on its heels and is now fully operational from its showroom on Wilton Road.

A tale of two Toyotas

Toyota has been very busy. Their stand at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2012 offered a perfect illustration of this, as packed as it was with a number of exciting and innovative new cars.

 The hotly anticipated Toyota Yaris Hybrid, which is set to roll out onto UK roads this summer, caused a predictable stir. In the race to produce the first petrol/electric super-mini, the Yaris is looking impressive. Toyota has been smart enough to utilise a lot of the hybrid technology previously developed for the groundbreaking Prius model. Spreading the use of cutting-edge technology to the more mainstream vehicles in the range is a long-term strategy of the Japanese manufacturer. The result of this strategy is that consumers seeking a small family car with hybrid credentials this summer can choose the Toyota Yaris Hybrid.

 The designers of the Yaris Hybrid have worked on the battery sizes so that interior space is no longer an issue. In fact, the luggage capacity of the Yaris Hybrid is a generous 286 litres, identical to what is found in the petrol and diesel versions, and interior passenger space is comparable also.

 The Toyota Yaris Hybrid operates 66% of the time in zero-emissions mode, making it a super clean choice for the environmentally minded.  Another highlight for the Toyota brand at Geneva was the GT86 sports car. BMW In Preston

It was a sunny day and so I decided to take a day off from work. I spent most of the day in the back garden sunbathing, whilst listening to music on my ipod. The back garden of my house in Preston is not huge but it is big enough to fit a few chairs and some loungers, which is all I need. I remember thinking at the time that I did not remember the last time Preston had experienced such good weather.

I eventually had to leave the house and drive to a supermarket in Preston. I used my BMW to drive across Preston to get to the supermarket. On the way there I opened the sun roof in the BMW to get the maximum amount of sun and heat through the roof. When I bought the BMW In Preston, I had a choice as to whether I got a BMW with a sunroof or not and I am glad that I decided to get a BMW with a sunroof.

I bought a range of items from the supermarket in South Preston but I think the most important thing was the box of ice creams. I was looking forward to getting back to my house in North Preston and returning to the garden. I have always been a fan of sun bathing and I hope that I never get sick of it. Once I had paid for my items I got back into my BMW and drove back home across Preston. It did not take too long to drive home and before I knew it I was back. I parked my BMW in my garage and ran to the back garden. As soon as I sat down I noticed a few drops of rain and within minutes it was pouring down with rain.

Saab Updates

 It has been a few months now since the Swedish car make Saab went bankrupt, it is the latest victim of the on-going global financial crisis. There is still hope that car production will resume at the Saab plant in Trollhattan. After the Christmas break it was thought that the company administrators may re-start production to complete the 100 or so cars left on the production line. The local workers union did not agree to this and negotiations are still on going.

In some very sad news, it was announced in the middle of January that more than 100 Saab cars will be sent to the crusher as part of the receivership plan. As well as incomplete models there were also some pre-production examples of the Saab 9-5 estate, as well as a handful of the Mexican-built 9-4x SUV. A single example of the 9-5 estate has been saved and will be sent to the Saab Museum.

There was some good news announced towards the end of January, when it was revealed that the city of Trollhattan, SAAB AB and the Wallenberg Foundation had reportedly paid around £2.6 million to secure the entire museum collection. This means that the collection in Trollhattan will remain in place; prior to this the administrators had tried to split up and sell the collection to get the most money out of them. The museum currently holds 120 cars amongst the collection is the first ever Saab car built, the Ur-Saab.

After a quiet few weeks, there was an audacious bid made by Chinese car maker Zhejang Youngman Lotus to buy the Saab operation. The bid was reportedly around £282m, but the receivers are said not to be very impressed. The Chinese car maker wants to build the second-generation 9-3 alongside an unnamed new Lotus model.

Due to the way Saab was set-up and its relationship with GM it is very difficult to sell the plants, equipment and rights as a going concern. Whatever the case the automotive industry as a whole would like to see dealer like Saab Coventry saved and the factories producing cars once again.

Volkswagen up!

The original Volkswagen up! concept car was designed using a rear-engine, rear-wheel drive layout but the 2011 production up! model will have a front-engine, front-wheel drive layout, using the Volkswagen Group MQB platform and a 3-cylinder 1.0 litre petrol engine.

Recently 16 employees at Volkswagen Communications attempted an unofficial world record to seat 15 women and one man into the Volkswagen up!. Employees from VW dealers in Birmingham and many others from across the UK came to watch the attempt.

The Volkswagen up! measures 3.54 metres long and 1.64 metres wide, which is one of the smallest four-seat cars, but it still managed to fit all 16 employees. There were two in the boot, one on the dashboard, seven on the rear bench, four on the front seats, two in the footwells, and then the boot lid and doors were shut, and the windows were also closed.

There has been couple more attempts but in a Volkswagen Beetle, the first was at a Volkswagen meet in Australia, where 17 people managed to fit inside a Volkswagen Beetle. Then in 2010, 27 students in the USA managed to fit themselves into a new Volkswagen Beetle.

The Volkswagen up! is a great new car designs to fun and use ability and I know I will be heading down to the VW dealer in Birmingham to take a closer look.

New Mitsubishi Outlander

There has been a lot of talk about the new Mitsubishi Outlander that I heard when I was at a Mitsubishi dealer in London.

This new model was shown at the Geneva motor show recently and if more equipped with gadgets and adds more class to the existing model. The new features that have been added to this latest model include a new steering column, ‘wide vision’ xenon headlamps, a flat cargo area and a new dashboard for “better driver concentration”. Added safety kit includes a ‘Forward Collision Mitigation System', a lane departure warning system and active cruise control.

During the course of this year the all-wheel drive plug-in drivetrain will be introduced too, and will be available in Europe from 2013 following the standard car’s late summer launch. The system uses two electric motors, one to power each axle, and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.
