Depicted is Diagoras of Rhodes, an enormously successful boxer and Olympic champion active during the 5th century BCE. According to lore, when Diagoras' sons both won victories themselves at the Olympics, they bore their father aloft on their shoulders. A spectator then shouted "Die, Diagoras, for you cannot ascend to Olympus" (the meaning being that Diagoras had reached the summit of happiness possible for a mortal) -- at which point Diagoras died.
