「 Is there any meaning to this song? 」

You find yourself in the middle of a grandiose concert hall, most of the seats sadly left unfilled. Those few who have bothered to show up all look to be just about as confused as you are. Certainly none of you are dressed for a symphony performance. Certainly none of you meant to come.

The curtain rises. A single white spotlight illuminates the stage.

「 There is no meaning to this song. 」

Be that as it may, the show’s about to start– so why don’t you come play along?

Symphony of Despair is a closed Dangan Ronpa roleplay that takes place over MSPARP, Tumblr, and Skype. Trials are Skype-based. 16-20 students will be allowed in. Apps are now open and will be closing on May 29th!

Will there be a sequel to this?

Um, I’m sorry to say, but that’s unlikely. If there was, and that’s an IF, it’d have to wait for Garden3 to end, so there’s a lot of time ahead but I wouldn’t count on it. I haven’t given a firm no yet, but I’m much more inclined on no rather than yes.

To Shake the Earth

The pitch blackness is now accompanied by a distant rumble. At first it is the mere sound, but after a while, you can feel the floor beneath your feet beginning to subtly shake. The jostling is enough to make one queasy. Is everything just... falling apart?

And then you go promptly half deaf with the sound of the thunder, and the earth under your feet heaves with the strike of the lightning. Everyone is thrown to the ground, or staggering sideways into walls, until the shaking subsides. 

When the others find Ameya on the beach, her hands are clenched at her sides despite their burns, and her eyes are very firmly on the still-visible lights on the horizon. Though her eyes are suspiciously shiny, she is determined not to cry. Now is not the time for that. It’s been 72 hours, and she’s finally back.

... Yet Darker [Environment Update]

If you thought the day dawned dark yesterday, you were not prepared to wake up in total pitch darkness today. 

It’s a good thing for the torches bolted to the walls, or you wouldn’t be able to see anything at all, save for when the brief arching lightning above your heads illuminates the colosseum for precious few seconds. 

None of the lightning has struck the beach, or the temple for that matter. The thunder growls like an apex predator. Ameya has still not emerged from the cave. It has been 48 hours.

Dark, Darker... [Environment Update]

You awake to find it so dark that you consider going back to sleep. But even if you do, when you inevitably wake hours later, the light level has not changed. It’s dark as night, no matter how much time ticks away. Above your heads, the stormclouds have turned pitch black, more like billowing smoke from a fire than a thunderstorm. Or perhaps from a volcano, as you can see lightning arcing between the plumes, crackling and filling the air with the smell of ozone.

Ameya entered the Depths yesterday. She has yet to come out.

What’s more, above the entrance, where there would usually be the name of the person who had been called in, whatever was there has been roughly, almost angrily scratched out...

Ozone Air

It’s been a long time. A longer time than Ella spent in there, than anyone else spent in there. Daisuke is sweating and pacing, it’s been a full day, he’ll do anything, anything just to hear the crack of lightning, the rumble of thunder, anything...

And then it strikes.

Liao stands on the beach, his signature bowl cut marred by having most of it around his eyes shorn away. He blinks in the light of day, bruised, but alive(?).

Roaring Gale

Minoru went to the Depths full of energy, called there and marching into its gaping mouth without so much as a moment’s flinch. Such confidence, but is it misplaced? The hours tick past, the night fading into morning, and he’s not back...

The thunder cracks and hits the beach.

“Haha, wow,” is all Minoru says, before he promptly collapses into the shallow water.

Frothing Sea

Despite Jun asking to return the favour and walk to the entrance of the cave with him, in the end Mayo decided he needed to do this alone. And alone he did it - entering into the mouth of the cave with prayer on his lips and fear in his body. It’s been hours... will he come back?

The lightning strikes the beach and answers the lingering question.

Mayo doesn’t linger long on the shore, cheeks streaked with tears as he turns and stalks away to the temple’s grand hall to hide himself amongst the pillars. Sometimes, being alone to think is best.

Rolling Thunder

After hours of waiting, Liao is no doubt beginning to get worried as to Daisuke’s fate. It’s been a nerve-wracking time, but as the time drags on it only becomes moreso. The night comes and goes and the morning dawns with no Daisuke, only darker thunderclouds...

And then a flash of lightning hits the beach.

Slowly going from standing to sitting in the shallow water, Daisuke looks blankly ahead of him, still processing things. Regardless, he’s lived.

Song of the Sea

Daisuke bid goodbye to Ayane some time ago - it must be hours now, an entire night has passed in anticipation, and with good reason. With the likely contents of that cave, and Shizuka’s personality, is a good result even possible?

A crack of thunder and lightning answers the question as it strikes the beach.

Shizuka and Ayane supported each other somewhat more literally during this final test. Now, no longer sure which had been holding the other up, and in this moment neither wholly one nor both, they collapse to the sand, burying their face in their hands. It isn't much longer before they start to cry.

A Lightning Flash

The Depths called for Hotaka some time ago, and there are certainly various people who have been waiting for him. Stalwart, stern Hotaka, going in on his own to face trials no doubt more moral than physical? One wonders if he’ll be okay...

The question is answered with a crack of thunder and flash of lightning. Standing on the beach, Hotaka stares out at the lights ahead on the horizon. By the time anyone finds him, it seems he is missing the briefcase he entered the Depths with. Wasn’t that one...?

The Rolling Storm

Masato left her cell several hours prior, and by now the students are starting to sense a pattern. After what they saw of Ella’s fate, though, it’s much more worrying to wait for someone to return from the Depths now. It’s not whether they’ll come back - it’s whether they’ll come back in one piece.

A crack of thunder and a flash of lightning.

At the beach, Masato stands in the shallows of the water, a little tear stained, but otherwise unharmed.

Howling Wind

Day two, and nobody has seen Ella since last night, when they may have glimpsed them walking towards the entrance of the Depths with steely purpose. They’ve been in there a long time, longer than Jun was, and the storm above has been growing ever darker.

The crash of thunder and strike of lightning hits not the beach, but the temple. And as the students go to check, they find something quite horrifying...

On the altar of the grand temple, meters from the door that Ella themself boobytrapped so many weeks ago, is a severed head. What looks like blood but smells like motor oil has soaked into the stone altar’s cracks, and painted on the front in still-glistening liquid are the words: KNOW THYSELF AND REPENT.

The Storm Commences

Himura Mayo watched Katagami Jun disappear into the gaping mouth of the cave hours ago. It’s been all night and he hasn’t come back out. What is even in there... Mayo doesn’t know, but he gets the distinct feeling he’s not permitted to enter to go after him, even if he wants to.

The sudden crack of thunder sounds almost directly above his head, or like it comes from the cave itself. Lightning flashes - and anyone outside the colosseum with a good enough view can see it strike the beach by the shore.

Jun, standing in the surf, blinks at the world around him, surprised as anyone else to be back in one piece.

And So Spoke The Thunder [Environment Update]

As you exit the Colosseum, your eyes are drawn upwards to the sky. Usually it’s some form of white-grey overcast clouds, but now it looks... bleak. Like it might rain soon. There’s a pressure in the air like a stormfront pushing in. If you decide to ignore the foreboding weather and head outwards, you’ll find the rest of the locations have similar, uniform weather. 

You walk to the town, and find the gate shut and the guards missing. No longer is there a chatter of servants and bustling town activity beyond the wall, there is only empty silence, the wind whistling over the tops of the stones and kicking up the sand at your feet. Nothing to do here, you may try to go to the bath house, but that is also deserted. The library, the temple, the beach... empty.

Come to think of it, you haven’t seen a single servant since the trial, and it’s been a few hours.

You look up at the sky again, and hear a distant, low rumble, unable to tell if it’s a crackle of thunder, or the displeased growling of a great cat.

Either way, it can’t be anything good.

To The Depths of the Earth [New Area]

Returning to your cells after the trial, you can sense something is immediately... off. You’re not sure what it is. Everything around you looks the same, there are no sudden dead bodies, nothing so ominous as blood on the walls or chanting, not even a particularly noticeable silence. The fact you can’t pinpoint what has changed is almost infuriating. Maybe it’s better to distract yourself. 

As you take a wander out of your cell and down the hallway, you notice a brand new doorway on the inner wall, where a door to the catacombs would usually appear. The new doorway has nothing blocking its path, and beyond you can see a cave stretching into the dark. The two sides of it are flanked with burning torches but they do little to dent the darkness. Inscribed above the doorway are the words:

Ye Who Enters; Know Thyself.

Well that’s cryptic. A cold wind blows out of the mouth of the cave, and as the chill races down your spine, you get a sense that if you do go in here... you will have to be very careful if you want to come back out again.
