So, me and @redfieldwakeup were chatting about ships, and it got me on this giant tangent about Mar-Bit.
If you follow my blog you know Mar-Bit is my beloved. Ever since I rejoined Tumblr the fandom enveloped me and so did their love for this pairing. (The musical fans really hyped it up, so thank you for that musical fans!) You breathed life into this ship that was only ever just a thought in the back of my mind and nothing more.
But as someone who hasn’t seen the musical and only has the book and movie as a reference point, it made me wonder, why do I love them so much? What is it about them that has me absolutely squealing, kicking my feet, enamored?
And so I wrote.
Maybe it’s the idea of that moment where the Soc and greaser world collide and instead of anger and hate and chaos, it’s just…soft? And in the same way Pony describes the moment with Cherry, Marcia and Two-Bit, for a second, were just a boy and girl walking home from the drive-in movie theater. There was no social standing. There were no “rules.” It was just them.
I like that Two-Bit is known for his string of blondes, and Marcia was an outlier. She was “different” (corny I know, sue me). I like that her and Two-Bit had the same weird sense of humor and were off in their own little world during that walk home–– or as Pony put it, “Two-Bit and Marcia weren’t even listening to us. They were engaged in some wild conversation that made no sense to anyone but themselves.” (Golly, I can only imagine what that conversation sounded like. I bet they were flirting up a storm with each other!!)
In my mind, Randy probably didn’t know the real Marcia. The Soc world is all very superficial. But that night? That night, Marcia got to really be herself ––with a boy she liked enough to give her number to! And she did it regardless of what the rest of her peers would probably think.
They are quite literally that Taylor Swift lyric from “the 1,” you know the greatest films of all time were never made.
*sigh* They could’ve been so good and they are canon in my heart. 💛
(Canonically the baby isn’t his, but fanonically 👀 who’s to say it’s not?)

Right, so, this one looks different from Soda's and Johnny's because I actually did it before theirs. In May or April, I think. So yeah. But still very proud of it, even if it seems a bit wonky compared to the other two. I chose midnights because it just screams Dally the most. Reputation was too much of a love album to be his, so Midnights it is. Although I'd love a Reputation version of Dally (I will sketch that eventually); Midnights is mature, holds grudges, is confident, bold… Yet fragile inside. It's about putting on a tough facade to survive when you've been forced to grow up at a very young age. It's about almost refusing to be vulnerable. “You're on your own, kid, you always have been.” seems too childish for Dally, but it defines him well, imo. Mastermind, especially because c'mon, now, if “No one wanted to play with me as a little kid, so I've been scheming like a criminal ever since, […], I'm only cryptic and machiavellian cause' I care.” isn't the most Dally thing ever. Midnight Rain is his song, btw, and nobody can tell me otherwise. ✦
✦ 1989 (Soda's Version) ♡˖🫐
I mean, obviously. 1989 is THE pop (feel good, love life, live to the fullest) album ever. In my defense, Soda would fit in Lover and Fearless, too, for sure, but 1989 just seemed the most fun for me to draw, so I did! I will probably (maybe) make a Lover and/or Fearless version later, though. 1989 is, even more than Fearless, about youth, hopeless romance and life. Do I need to explain why it basically has Soda's name on it? “Please leave me stranded, It's so romantic” (in New Romantics), or “Like any great love, it keeps you guessing, like any real love, it's ever-changing, like any true love, it drives you crazy” (in Welcome To New York), or even “You got that James Dean, daydream look in your eye” (in Style)… C'mon, now. I'd say Fearless is the actual perfect Soda album, because 1989 is mature, confident… Not that Soda's not confident, but Fearless has this naive aspect to it that reflects Soda's character in a deeper way, imo. We'll go with 1989 today, though. Blue is his color, and “in a world of boys, he's a gentleman”. ✦
Also, no one can tell me that “cowboy like me” isn't his. “You're a cowboy like me, perched in the dark, […], like it could be love, […], you're a bandit like me, hustling for the good life, never thought I'd meet you here, it could be love,” yeah, no, that's his. This is the texas coke song, too, I say as they drag me away… ✦
✦ folklore. (johnny's version) ♡˃͈ 🪩
OF COURSE. Folklore was MADE for Johnny, and I will die on this hill. Not to brag, btw, but this may actually just be the best art piece I've done ever, ok, I am so proud of this, you got no idea; Folklore is that kind of album that just gets it. It's gut-wrenching, it's soft and hard, it's a bloodstain on the innocence you'd expect from/in it… And that's just how Johnny is for me. He's quiet, observant, keeps it to himself, there's just so much going on inside, yet he isn't brave enough to say it, or thinks so. Because “When you are young, they assume you know nothing” (in Cardigan), “I think your house is haunted, […], and I think you should come live with me, and we can be pirates, then you won't have to cry, or hide in the closet” (in Seven), “Only 20 minutes to sleep, but you dream of some epiphany, just one single glimpse of relief to make some sense of what you've seen.” (in Epiphany, which is a song about both traumatized soldiers and workers in hospitals during the pandemic; I see it as the perfect song to describe Johnny's death)… I was in doubt between characterizing him as folklore or evermore, since evermore has this amazing autumn vibe, and I can't decide if Johnny gives off more of a winter (folklore) or fall vibe. I could've (and thought of) made him be folkmore, but when I had that idea, I was already finished with the piece. I may make an evermore version soon. I made him wear the folklore cardigan because he deserves one. ✦
Sidenote but “hoax” is my favorite Taylor song ever, and while it doesn't resonate with Johnny imo, it does with Dally for me. Sorry but “You know I left a part of me back in New York. You know the hero died so what's the movie for?” will never not be about him. ✦

Long post, and still not quite finished. I am currently working on Ponyboy's and Darry's Versions, but spoiler just for you: Pony's a mix of Debut (“Taylor Swift”; it's Taylor when she was younger, so she was immature, quick-witted, full of attitude, dreamy, insightful, all in one.) and Speak Now (loudmouth, vulnerable, guilty, still immature, growing up too fast, feeling unwanted). And Darry's Red (despite its fun side with “Stay Stay Stay”, “22”, “We Are Never Getting Back Together”, and more, it does have its mature side, with “All Too Well”, “The Last Time”, “I Almost Do", which is when I think about Darry the most. He could be evermore, too, both of her most mature works). I honestly don't have an album for Two-Bit or Steve, but Cherry (although not a Greaser) will probably be The Tortured Poets Department, for sure. I was thinking Two could be the funnier side of Red, maybe. And Steve, maybe Reputation, but it doesn't quite fit, so I think I might just sketch them as such soon. ✦ 🤍
