Rosie let Tiger out into the back garden and moved the comics out of the way. They weren’t her usual choices, but she’d been trying to do some research… “No, not like ice. Like suspended animation. Like frozen in time… It’s what I did to you” she explained quickly, worried about one of her parents arriving home. “So. What do you think I am? A mutant? Or an inhuman?..”

Josef kept watching his sister as if she were a complete stranger, or an alien. He’d seen both groups - the mutants and the inhumans - mentioned on the news, they all had. But to have his baby sister become one of them… It was scary stuff. “I don’t know, Rosie. I really don’t know the difference between them.”

“You’re looking at me weird, Joe...” Rosie sighed, dropping her eyes to the floor. Which is exactly why she hadn’t told anyone. No one. She’d been dealing with this alone for months...

Rosie, both a little surprised by her brothers language and concerned about his fall, moved instead to calm her dog, dealing with at least part of the commotion. “Joe, you said you wouldn’t freak out…” she reminded, quickly tidying up the comics before her Mom got home with Josh and Edie. “I dunno… A few weeks ago… Thea knocked over something in science class and when I tried to catch it, the whole class just froze for like twenty minutes…”

Josef picked himself up, righting the chair and the table before turning widened eyes onto Rosie. “Yeah, I promised when I thought you were just weirdly curious about the mutant thing.” Definitely not the same as agreeing not to freak out when something of this magnitude was just dropped on a guy. “Why is it that whenever something happens, you two are right in the middle of it? Every time!” Still, it wasn’t their faults. “Wait, you can freeze stuff too? Like… ice?”

“Okay…” she sighed, standing up. “Watch carefully, and don’t freak out…” Rosie instructed, picking up an apple from the table and throwing it… Before it reached the other side of the room, a small flick of her hands caused everything in the room, other than herself, to freeze; Joey, the apple, even Tiger, her dog, who’d just run down stairs. She moved across the room and caught the apple as everything unfroze

To Josef, who had been frozen, it looked like teleportation. He fell backward off his chair, swearing a blue streak as he stared, Tiger barking at the commotion just to add his noise. “Jesus fuck, Rosie! What the fuck- When the fuck did this happen?”

“Then they probably would’ve already had the gene for it.” He narrowed his eyes at her, able to tell that something was off but not exactly what. “Squirt, I can keep a secret, okay? What’s with the sudden interest?”

“How does their DNA get different?.. How do you get to be a mutant or an inhuman?..” Rose asked, taking careful mental notes of everything she heard

“Some of them are born that way, others get into accidents - like Doctor Banner.” Josef answered, eyeing his sister closely at this point. “Rosie, is something wrong?”

“But what if they didn’t have powers when they were born and they didn’t have an accident?.. What if their powers just, poof, appear?..” Rosie prompted “No. Everything’s fine...” she lied, offering him a small smile in the hopes of convincing him.

Rosie nodded and took the seat opposite her brother, “can you tell me about them?”

“I’m sketchy on the science, so you might have to ask Doctor Banner about that.” Josef shrugged but leaned forward, elbows on the table. “They’re people, but their DNA is different, so they have powers. Not everybody sees them as people, and some mutants think they’re better than people. What else do you want to know?”

“…Yes. They’re called comics. You collect them.” He rolled his eyes but stayed put, curious to know where this was going. “Rosie, if you want to sneak out to the store, you don’t have to. We can go, it’s fine.”
