she hands him a gift box. inside, there's a book: 'the code book: the science of secrecy from ancient egypt to quantum cryptography', and a brand new biker jacket made of soft leather. "merry christmas, tim."
his fingers itch with the urge to pry the book open. coax the secrets from it’s contents but at the presentation of the jacket he pauses with his fingers resting on the cover. accepts the jacket too with a timid smile. ( he hadn’t been expecting anything from her, after all ) “ merry christmas, val. ”
he shrugs into the jacket and it feels ( a little ) ridiculous on his shoulders. maybe he should ask her how she wears one so well. instead he straightens his shoulders. meets her eye. “ so, we match now? ”
"timbo! timbit! timbuck two!" the bells glued to the antlers on jason's head jingle as he approaches his younger sibling, and hands tim a box with an obnoxiously large bow. inside, he'll find vintage volumes of 'the complete sherlock holmes', and a switchblade. the latter being jason's first knife he's ever owned. "merry christmas."
merry ---- doesn’t have much time to process around the box in his hands. the bow, the antlers. oh. his smile is slow to start but catches like fire in the instant it takes to part box from paper. ( books and knives, the two of them in a box ) he can’t speak for a moment around what’s formed in his throat. can’t recall the last time tears pricked his eyes but now he lifts the switchblade ( it’s practical / old / jason ) and feels the moisture in the corners of them. he should comment on the ridiculous tilt to the antlers on his brother’s head. the fact that the knife could’ve hurt the books. the fact that he’d forgotten to get anything in return.
“ thank you. ” the words jump awkwardly in his mouth, but he’s smiling like white snow on christmas morning. like he’s a kid / like they’re just brothers. “ i ---- thank you. ”

“ uh. protein. obviously. nuts? it’s healthy fat. ” so long as jason doesn’t peek inside his fridge, tim remains lounging. at peace with his alleged ‘bowl of travesty’ ( and really, it didn’t taste half bad if he ate it quick enough. ) “ i just got back in, i’m hungry. and if you can make something out of what i’ve got here, you’ve got more skill than i thought. ”

hand stops halfway into the jar and he’s debating whether or not it’s worth it to just go for it. a low growl of his stomach is a taunt and he hesitates. goes to the drawer instead. “ yes alfred. i’m sorry. i must have left my manners where my empty stomach is. ”
