Hi I haven't been on tumblr in a long time but I'm making a new account because this one sucks. Here's my face.
Suceava - Old Jewish Quarters
Ā One of the discoveries we have made in the archives is that we (LBIĀ archivists) happen to be living at just the same location as JewishĀ families from the late 1700s. The first three pictures are of the view from our windows of the rear of the St. Dimitri church and tower. The documents are transcriptions of an original document dated 1776 from the Jewish leader (Starost), Aron, in which he informs the priest of St. Dimitri about the court case between himself and a Romanian shopkeeper, Pantazi. A previous document includes a petition from Romanian shopkeepers and merchants asking that Aron be evicted from his house located behind St. Dimitri church and for Pantazi to take his place.
The Suceava state archives hold a number of documents from the late 18th and early 19th century regarding the Jewish merchants of the town and many record that their homes and stores were near the St. Dimitri church. Among other things, they and other merchants held a regular cattle market behind the church which eventually caused the church authorities to complain to the rulers about the stench and muck and ask that it be moved down the street. Today the Romanian orthodox church, covered in fading paintings, is surrounded by greying communist-era blocs. After a cold, wet and lingering winter the yard is filled with sticky mud and baying stray dogs - it is little tax on the imagination to visualize the scene filled with the cacophony and chaos of a cattle fair!
