Why I chose a robot head.

The main reason I chose a robot head is because I wouldn’t have access to things like a 3D printer and laser cutter like I would if we were still at college but with a robot head from the 40′s, even though it is from a fictional alternate reality, wouldn’t have been anywhere near perfection in design or quality so I knew I would be able to work with what I had. I was slightly put off making a robot head because they are a very frequently used thing in films and comics so a story behind would be hard to make fully unique.

I watched this video on how to get and good dirt effect on my model. Unfortunately for most of the video the actual model was out of shot but the explanations were good. Also the technique the creator used would only really be helpful on a small model so I will use actual dirt but also use washes to get an oil effect.

When I was picking out the imperfections I realised there was a hoover logo on this pipe. I am not sure how I missed this when attaching it but I am going to try and find something to cover it up because hoover doesn’t translate to anything that would make sense to be there in German.

I had a close look at the small areas where there were imperfections to fix and I think all of them are a least slightly fixable or improvable so I will try and fix them after I paint the neck.

I still need to paint the neck because I left it out as it was the main area I was holding so I didn’t want to rub the paint off. I think I will paint the rust a little more of a lighter brown under the browns I used on the rest and see how that looks compared to the rest. I think it may look better and more accurate to real rust and if so I will use this on the whole head.

I can’t decide whether or not I like the eyes with the ping pong balls in them more than without. I think they might stand out too much because of the white and black contrast so I am going to add some dirt in the sides of them to dampen the white a little and add some black paint as well to see if they look any better and then decide whether I will keep them or not.

These side panels are the parts of my model I like the least because I didn’t take the time to sand them smooth at the start of the build. I didn’t expect them to be on show which is why I should have had a plan before starting and also why I didn’t sand them.
