Home Alone (Drabble)
Mark sighed as he closed the door to his room, discarding his helmet on the bed.
Another day, another battle. As much as he had come to think of Coldfront as his home, it had been extremely quiet lately. Nobody from RED had contacted the team for months now. The last contact must have been when that storm came by, and that was over three months ago. It was almost as if-
As if they'd been abandoned.
The soldier's breath caught in his throat as the idea dawned on him. Had they been abandoned? Could they do that, just completely excommunicate a base without warning? No, no, of course they wouldn't do that. They were important mercenaries, and besides, their supplies were still coming in regularly, so there was no way the bosses had left them to die out in the cold! That was just crazy talk!
He slumped against the wall, sliding down it to sit on the floor, staring at the ceiling.
"Yeah, heh, of course they're still watching us, making sure we're okay. Why wouldn't they be?"
Though he wouldn't admit it, even to himself, the unsettled look in his eyes and his rigid posture made it clear; he knew.
He may well be home, but they were home alone now.

Whittler Wannabe (Drabble/Open)
If you happened to be wandering around the central point of Coldfront, you might notice something other than snow floating on the wind, or catch the hints of a voice over the bluster. Tracing it back to its source, you would come to the ledge leading from the RED base, with a glance upwards revealing the young Soldier, eyebrows furrowed in concentration as he moved the knife in his right hand around the wood in his left, thin shavings coming off and being caught by the breeze, scattered about the battlefield.
The soldier cursed again as the blade bit into his finger, red droplets falling down only to freeze in place next to their brethren far below. Cold and exasperated, the man jammed the finger to his lips, stemming the flow of blood as he got to his feet and made his way inside. Pulling a short length of bandage from his pocket, he tied it around his hands where the cuts were particularly deep, leaving several of his fingers practically mummified. Pausing for a moment outside the infirmaries, he flexed the digits, wincing as the cuts began to sting from the pressure.

He took the pencil from her with a forced expression of mild surprise that perfectly demonstrated why he wasn’t a Spy, tucking it back under the strap of his helmet.
"Oh, thank you. Uh, I really don’t mind what you get me. Nothing too filling, though; I have supper later, after all." He continued to stand around awkwardly, waiting to be directed to another room.
She raises a brow at his strange behavior. “You can sit in the lounge in there, if you’d like. I’ll be right back.” Ellie disappeared into the kitchen for a few moments before returning with an apple which she handed to him. “Apples are always good snacks.” Says the woman still munching on a chocolate bar.
Sitting in one of the sofa chairs near him, she asks, “What have you been up to? Anything interesting going on at the bases?”
Vaguely recalling where the lounge was, Mark nodded and made his way towards it, sighing quietly as his guess proved correct. When Ellie returned, he took the apple she offered, polishing it on his jacket with a smirk, glancing noticeably at the chocolate bar Ellie held.
He bit into the apple as she sat down, a pause following her question as he chewed. Swallowing, he responded.
"Same as always, really. Blowing people up, dying, being brought back to life, the usual." He threw the apple between his hands as he spoke. "At least winter's on its way out. Coldfront's rather prone to snowstorms, we had one back in January, I think?"
"Anyway, how're things here on the farm? Anything worthy of note?" He took another bite of the apple, looking towards her expectantly.

He managed to stop stammering long enough to hear her speak, a warm smile returning to his features, nicely accented by the hint of red coming up in his cheeks.
He entered with a simple “Thank you.”, walking a few paces before stopping, clearly unsure of where to go. He’d been here a few times before, but it had been so long he’d forgotten where things were.
At the offer of food, he opened his mouth to decline, but his stomach betrayed him with an audible growl. Closing his mouth into a sheepish grin, he nodded, straightening his helmet again. “Something to eat would be good, thank you.” A sudden realisation dawned on him, and he hurriedly scooped his helmet off his head, the pencil tucked into it dropping onto the floor and rolling to Ellie’s feet. Pretending not to notice, Mark tried (and failed miserably) to look like nothing had happened.
"Well, I’ve got lots of chocolate goodies, or I can get you fruits or veggies, whatever I have in my fridge. Just tell me whatever you’d like." Ellie replies, taking another bite of her chocolate bar. She watches the pencil roll to her feet, blinking at it before picking it up off the floor and handing it to him. She tries not to laugh at his expression, going back to nibbling on her chocolate bar while she waited for a response.

While he waited for the door to open, he rocked back and forth on the balls of his feet, fidgeting until Ellie revealed herself. An expression of concern moved across his face for a split second before he figured out that her unusual expression was just because he’d woken her up.
"Oh, i’m sorry, I didn’t know you were sleeping! I can come back later if you want to go back to sleep, I probably have other things to be doing anyway…" he continued to make excuses in rapid succession, hands waving wildly in his flusterment.
"N-no, it’s alright…! It was just a nap," she tries to assure him, rubbing her face and laughing quietly. Same old Mark. "Friends are more important than naps." Ellie opens the door further and steps aside. "Come on in, tell me what you’ve been up to." She grabs a chocolate bar from around the corner on a kitchen counter without leaving the hall, unwrapping it and taking a bite. Chocolate usually helped wake her up better than anything else.
"If you want a snack or something, I can get you something. Or if you just want something to drink." Her hostess manners were starting to kick in finally, the chocolate boosting her energy a bit.

His bedroom door closing with a click, Mark habitually straightened his helmet, which wasted no time in falling back over his left eye. Sighing lightly, the Soldier turned and began to walk, no particular destination in mind.
As he walked, he heard people going about their daily lives. Hushed voices in the infirmaries, metallic clanking from the workshop, until the monotonous hum of the teleporter room approached, blocking out all other noise. He looked into the room, the line of red discs neatly arranged as always. An idea began to form, and the Soldier’s face lit up in a wide grin as he darted into the room and hopped onto the contraption labelled ‘Fastlane’. In a flash, he was gone.
Hopping off the other end, he quickly exited the base, walking up one of the few roads the mercs were given free passage down, a large farmhouse quickly coming into view. He began to jog as he approached the building, his toothy smile not once leaving his face. Knocking on the front door, the man looked for all the world like a twelve-year-old boy about to receive the biggest, bestest birthday present ever.
Ellie was in the middle of the best nap ever on her couch, smiling blissfully in her sleep. She was probably having dreams about chocolate fountains and candy mountains and whispering words of Willy Wonka songs. Probably. It was hard to tell with her.
She sighs contently in her slumber, until a noise rouses her from her nap. Ellie shifts onto her other side, blinking sleepily as her brain tried to slowly decipher what it was that woke her. Rooster? No, he wasn’t in the house. She sits up, staying there for a moment or two, spaced out, trying to register that she was awake and not still sleeping.
Oh! It was knocking. Someone had been knocking at the door. She had been keeping them waiting while she had been trying to wake up. Ellie slaps her face a little to wake up a little more before walking a bit clumsily to the front door. She opens it with a yawn.
"Sorry about that, caught me in the middle of a nap—" Ellie rubs her eyes and then realizes who it is at her doorstep and musters up a drowsy smile. "Mark! Long time, no see…! How have you been?"
