A gift for a friend of mine.
a matter of trust 👑 mimi & iris
Trust was the main ingredient, one could say, in the way Iris trained her dragons. Some of her team, she’d raised them from hatchlings, while others came along in their progressive years. Gaining a Pokemon’s trust was vital to the process. Iris was relatively pro at it now, but she wouldn’t go so far as to let that thought go to her head - after all, it was her Charizard who remained painfully resilient in this situation, bringing doubt to everything she thought she’d known about training Pokemon.
She thought maybe a change of scenery might encourage him to come out of his shell a little bit, and so outside of the perimeters of Opelucid City she took him. It was a quiet evening, and she thought it would be the perfect setting to try and light the fire within him, so to speak.
The creature had been brought out of his Pokeball, and that was about as far as she’d gotten. He’d somehow managed to scale a tree, and the Champion stood at the base of it, arms resting on her hips, yelling up at him.

Setting foot onto Unovan land felt…. different. Seven long years Hilda had been away from Unova, and her feet, planted firmly on the floor, felt ethereal. She was really home. She was really here.
And she was afraid.
All her friends, her family, everyone she’d left behind was here, waiting for her. How had they changed? How had they moved forward without her? Was Cheren still his hard working idealistic self? Did Bianca ascertain her dream of becoming a musical star?
What about Touya, or the gym leaders? She’d heard that Lenora had stepped down to allow a new trainer to become the gym leader.

It was one of the things she always loved about the world, how it was always changing. Faces would always come and go, would bring her new challenges with every turn. As reigning champion the girl always faced her fair share of them, but even when she’d made it to the top, she still found different ways to keep challenging herself.
Unova was always important to Iris, it became her home when she really didn’t have one. So it was only natural that she inherit the crown, per se. Not that it came to her so easily; the girl grew up training hard, and with some of the toughest types of Pokemon the region had ever seen. It was only after she’d met a certain trainer that she became inspired. Championship? Seemed almost out of reach, but after she had left the title behind, Iris saw it as her chance.
She often thought about Hilda, wondering where she had gone, how she was doing. Unova was her home, after all, and the young champion could only wonder and wait for the day she decided to return.
It didn’t seem like she could forget that voice. So when Iris heard her name, she spun around, immediately knowing who it was.
“Hilda!! It’s really you!” There was a moment where she debated giving the girl a hug, and of course decided to indulge. “I can’t believe it! You’re back! How have you been? You have to tell me everything!”
lightning rod 👑 moros + iris
@doomedgod liked for a starter.
When the clouds in the sky grow dark and electricity crashes and echoes across Unova, that’s when her dragons tend to seek shelter. Sure, there are some species of them who thrive when thunder and lightning curse the sky, but her cave-dwellers prefer the cool, damp, and rocky walls of Victory Road. Storms are not uncommon, especially when there’s a particular Force of Nature that will bring them around every now and again. There was something about this particular storm, though, almost suspicious -- but it wasn’t Iris’ concern at the moment. What she was focused on, was taking shelter.
They’d only been training just moments before, it seemed. The Champion and her Gabite had been working hard when the grey clouds began to loom overhead. She’d brushed it off, at first, but a downpour was quick to follow, and even as she just began running back into town, her clothes and hair were very quick to be soaked. Sounds crashed overhead just as she hustled into the Pokemon Center.
Water dripped off of her shoulders and onto the floor, but Iris marched right up to the nurse’s station and handed the woman her Pokemon -- and politely asked for a towel or two.
how about a starter call? ;)

More champions! (Gen 4, 5, and 6)
Part 1 | 2 | 3
29, 49?
29. What is your character’s weaknesses? Hubris? Pride? Controlling?
Iris can be incredibly stubborn. She’d hate to have anything get in her way, especially if it’s something she knows she can handle on her own. This coincides with her childish mindset; having achieved greatness at such a young age, she never seems to be taken seriously as much as she’d hoped she would be. Iris struggles with this a little bit, and it’s one of the reasons she can be super temperamental at times.
49. What about voice? Pitch? Strength? Tempo and rhythm of speech? Pronunciation? Accent?
Her voice is somewhat high in pitch, and likely to go down as she gets older. When she enunciates, her voice has a distinct boom about it, and even in a casual situation she’ll have a fairly distinct tone. She can speak a little fast sometimes, especially when she is excited. Her accent is distinctly Unovian, though to people more native to the city, they would be able to pick up a slight accent due to her growing up in a small village on the outskirts of Unova.
6, 10, 19
6. Did they feel rejection or affection as a child?
It leaned more toward affection; though having been raised in a foster home, Iris had a fairly positive relationship with her foster parents. Though she never really saw them much like actual parents of hers, there was no shortage of feeling loved and accepted.
10. Is your character street-smart, book-smart, intelligent, intellectual, slow-witted?
Iris is fairly street-smart. Always has been - some of the early days of her youth would’ve been spent out wandering on her own, and she had a knack for keeping herself out of real trouble and defending herself. She’s also pretty savvy on camping out in forests, having spent many days and nights in the woods surrounding the Village.
19. What were your character’s deepest disillusions? In life? What are they now?
Most of her disillusions would typically have to do with training her dragons. With time she’d come to learn that raising their type wouldn’t be as easy as it’d been when she first came from the Village. Different species acted differently, would have to be trained differently, etc. It certainly didn’t set her back, but she learned she’d have to develop a different way to take care of her Pokemon.
37 & 38?
37. How is your character’s imagination? Daydreaming a lot? Worried most of the time? Living in memories?
Iris doesn’t tend to let her mind drift all that often. She’s typically pretty on track with her goals, her ambition, and everything else she does. There are things she often thinks about and hopes she can achieve in the future, and she does have some nice dreams she hopes to fulfill someday, but she doesn’t let those things distract her too often.
38. Are they basically negative when facing new things? Suspicious? Hostile? Scared? Enthusiastic?
Quite the opposite. Iris will always look forward to new things and experiences. It’s one of the reasons why she’s trained so hard to become Champion of Unova - to encounter the toughest and the strongest trainers herself, and to be in a position she isn’t guaranteed to be in forever. This applies outside of the field as well; any challenge she may be put up against, Iris is more than eager to jump on board and test her own strength and will.
4.
4. What type of discipline was your character subjected to at home? Strict? Lenient?
Iris grew up in a foster home, so there were certain guidelines she had to follow (mostly involving keeping her space clean, being well-behaved when families came through looking to adopt, etc.). Her foster parents were pretty lenient when it came to anything else their foster children did, even encouraged their ambitions and allowed them to thrive in what ever way worked for the kids.
They did tend to be a little tough on Iris, simply because she’d always seemed to be the most difficult to handle. Iris tended to sneak out a lot (usually to go off and watch the dragon trainers in the village battle one another, or to attempt to bond with nearby wild Pokemon), she never seemed to behave well enough when interviewing with potential adopters, etc.
But even with such things in place, it never really put a stop to her and her wants. She was still a good kid, still wanted to learn and grow, and took her discipline seriously (especially when she’d been accepted to the Village’s dragon training program).

It’s quiet, where she brought him first.
He seemed pretty...not in the mood when Iris had stopped in, but that was the thing. Iris would always be in the mood, and it was something he was going to have to get used to from here on out. Sure, Iris could be obnoxious, persistent, a little loud at times. She had patience on her side, too. Tons of heart to give, something he’s probably never legitimately felt in his life.
His attitude hasn’t chanced since they left Mary’s booth. He’s shown no signs of wanting to move, refused food, and will only blow smoke rings at her if she tries to touch him. She hasn’t gotten very far with him at all. But, she can attest some slight accomplishment, since sitting beside him on the ground doesn’t appear to bother him too much.
Isn’t he magnificent? The way his neck curls, how sharp his talons are... (oh yes, he definitely takes good care of his own claws). His size wasn’t very intimidating, to be honest -- not that it mattered much, anyway. He was just her size.
She’d be an amateur trainer not to take notice of his prominent scars, as well as the less noticeable ones. Oh, she could only imagine how painful it must have felt. Not only would that hinder his flight, but his wings appeared tattered at the ends as well. She’d never know what sort of situation he came from, only that it was a genuinely horrible one. Whoever would think of treating a Pokemon this way certainly didn’t deserve him.
There was much healing to be done, far before any actual training could begin, Iris realized. Her patience was a valuable asset -- sure, she may not have actually seemed like the type to pause in her ambitions, but she was a totally different person when it came to caring and training her Pokemon.
“Mary said you’re not a great flier...” Her tone may have implied she’s not too thrilled about the idea, but the girl still grinned a she watched the flame on his tail flickering, and looked to where his eyes were angled. “Bah! What does she know? Most fliers of your nature don’t get used to their wings right away -- and, well, I don’t know how long you’ve been capable of flight at all, but it just seems to me like you need to be re-taught.”
He wasn’t fazed in the least bit by what she was saying, only continuing to breathe softly and make like she didn’t exist.
Iris’ eyes trailed to his scars again; poorly taken care of, and obviously painful, it was clear where she needed to begin. The tough part was getting through that cold, hardened, nasty personality. He wasn’t paying attention, and she was close enough to him that she could almost touch those very tender spots -- she respected, though, that she was to avoid these points. Instead reaching out to stroke the upper part of his neck.
Affection was, well, something he’d never experienced before. Unsure of how to react at first. Lashing out in response was all he’d ever been known for, but there was something about this sort of touch that forced him to second guess himself for a moment. Made him uncomfortable still, but recognized that there was likely very little harm this small girl could do to him.
He picked up his head, twisting his neck around to look her directly in the eye. A scowl if she’d ever seen one, Iris maintained a pleasant demeanor while he snorted heavily. They maintained this stare for a good while, and Iris went on to continue stroking him. For a moment or two at least, he seemed content. He would eventually rip himself away from her, and Iris would be satisfied with the fact that she’d made some progress.
Both minds were at ease.
Spring Scavenger Hunt | Green Mankeys
Travel is so invigorating! So foreign! Interesting! It was just the same as she left her home village for Unova -- here though, it was a trip inspired by pure intrigue. She’d never participated in a competition like this before, and so she wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but excitement certainly overshadowed any sense of uncertainty she may have felt. Hoenn was absolutely beautiful; the humidity hung heavily over Verdanturf as the young Champion strolled toward the festival center, not only dazzled by all of the goings on, but the very notion of being region on her own.
Iris eventually found her way to the registration booth, briefly chatting with excited volunteers while receiving her uniform, as well as other information she’d need: maps, rules, and the ultimate goal. Tracking down a berry seemed simple enough, but Iris had a feeling that they wouldn’t have made a competition like this that easy for them. Fortunately she wouldn’t have to do it alone -- she just had to track down her partner!
She quickly went off to change into her shirt, rolling the sleeves as she left the conditioned air of the Pokemon Center, and began to scour the crowd for a uniform matching hers. Getting a good look at their competition in the process, there were some teams already breaking off, some showing a little reluctance to be paired up with someone who wouldn’t have been their first choice. Iris personally wouldn’t have cared who she ended up with, as long as they were as eager as she was!
It only took her a few moments to spy a similar green. Iris didn’t think she’d see a familiar face wearing the same color as her, but she brightened up at the sight of those sock buns and visor cap. “Rosa! Hey!!” She stuck her arms up in the air and waved at her fellow champ, eagerly heading in her direction.
