I can't find the source but I think Oda confirmed the in-universe language of one piece is indeed english, bacause it's "the language of pirates" or something similar

Ah yeah that checks out! Like, I'm not an expert on the Golden Age of Piracy, but most of its most famous/influential players were English, including the ones we know Oda was inspired by (cough Blackbeard cough). So yeah, that totally makes sense.

I dont want it to sound like I’m correcting anon or OP since my source is ‘official’ but not confirmed canon, but one of the Straw Hats Sories Novel apparently posed this idea of the OP world having a wholly unique language.

(second pic is from the Wiki’s summary of the novel, to provide a bit more context to the excerpt in the tweet. I have no official translations for the novel on hand, unfortunately).

This language would still likely resemble English, since most places and people have names in English, but definitely a bit of Japanese mixed in, as thats how Oda tends to differentiate dialects in people like the citizens of Wano, and he uses both language’s writing systems interchangeably for location signs and wanted posters.

I just got really excited when I saw this exchange because I love the idea of. language in the OP world in general. Something unique to each culture, each island or sea, that they unfortunately have to keep hidden but that is truly theirs.

The English subtitle here just says ‘seafood,’ but the kanji themselves say 海賊拉麺/kaizoku raamen, which means ‘Pirate Ramen.’
