I got all my drafts done wahhhh!
Back over to @vaultbb for me! Lots of hugs and kisses- thank you so much for being patient with the delays over here!
Christ, it was just a kid. Red swore quietly, pulling his head away from the scope to squint down at her.
Wasn’t unheard of for people to use kids to do their dirty work. The Legion had done it often enough for the ghoul to still be wary as he spoke again.
“Hey, calm down, I ain’t no raider. Just need you to put your bag in front of you and back away from it a few steps, alright? Gonna promise you I ain’t going to take it, for all it’s worth. Just need to make sure you’re not loaded with C4 or somethin’.”
She trembled in fear, her hand on the handle of her gun, trying to avoid thinking of all the horrible things that this man could to do her.
Annie felt as helpless as she did when her Creator dumped her in the middle of the wasteland for the first time. This was a situation in which she could do nothing but beg for her life and pray to whatever God was listening that this man would not hurt her.
Her fate was in this stranger’s hands, and the hands of the gods, and the powers had not seemed too kind of late. Nodding slowly, she slipped off her pack and set it down before backing away from it. He was lying. The last guy who said that to her robbed her of everything.
“Please…,” she whispered softly.
“Relax stringbean, I ain’t doing anything.” He walked forward, using the tip of his rifle to open the bag the best he could.
Seemed like regular supplies. Bending down, he took the chance of actually tugging it open and looking inside, shifting things around a bit, rifle still in hand and pointed to the ground at her feet. Would only take a jerk upwards to fire into her.
Content that she was just a kid wandering he closed the pack up again, walking over to her and handing it back.
“Sorry if I gave you a scare. Can’t be too careful these days when you see a kid wandering around on their own. Speaking of which--- why are you by yourself?”
He asked, but his tone was low, as if he already suspected an answer.
“Trust me, I know the feeling. Didn’t have to worry about it long though. Besides, Coop was never one to get into that sort of trouble- always careful, even these days.” Which was, in all honesty, a blessing.
“Shouldn’t be that way. Was hoping after 200 years things would be better then this. Finally see some people settling down, doing honest work instead of pillaging and shooting up chems... and why wouldn’t they? In a world where you work like a dog and die like one too, why wouldn’t you just enjoy it instead? Hate it.” He rubbed at his face with a strained sigh.
“’s why I stay out here. Can’t stand seeing either side of it. Been on both at one point or another.” And he polished off his beer, grimacing as he swallowed.

“Typical of Vault tech garbage. No offence.” He sighed, shaking his head but seeming to accept the story as the truth, weapon lowering to the wayside.
“I might have what you need laying around. Could patch it up for you, for a few caps or an errand..”
“None taken. I can fix it myself, just need the parts. What do you need done?” He’d rather do something than pay something. Doing something could be it’s own reward, depending on the doing.
“Got some work I need to get done on the generators- can’t do it myself either. Figure if my scrawny son can lift it with the hoist, someone your size shouldn’t have a problem helping me.
Just need to get under it for a second, see what’s wrong with it. Assuming you don’t let it crush me, I’ll show you where the parts are. Got a deal?”
Her tone was enough to convey an inkling of that worry, which was enough to stop him from shooting her the moment she scooted closer. A pointed frown was shot her way instead.
“Well, I haven’t seen anyone like that. Might be that they are looking for you too. If they’re heading to Sanctuary for some trade they’ll have to pass by here, if you want to keep an eye out for them on top of the pumps.
You try stealing anything though and you’ll be two hands short by the time you leave.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t. Thank you.” The courier watched the ghoul lower his weapon, then continued inside to the station. She took her hood off and fluffed her stringy, unwashed hair out from under it, then glanced around the place.
“You got a place where I can cook some food?” She asked. “I’ve got a bunch of ragstag meat and I need to cook it and dry it out before it spoils.”
“Yeah, just in the station. Mind the set up though- everything is just where I like it to be.” God, that made him sound old. Not that it was any lie at this point.
“Also got a hot water tank. You can clean up that mop of yours in the tub- not like I’m using it. Just don’t mess anything up in there... and clean up after yourself, for christ sake. I ain’t no maid and I certainly don’t want to be scrubbing away whatever ring of filth you leave behind.”
redsrocket:
“Things that still grow in Wasteland soil, soaking up all that irradiation and grime. For the best though- maybe I’ll get lucky and hear about you going ghoul in a few months.” Leaning on the edge of a table, Red regarded the other.
“What are the Brotherhood doing in the Commonwealth anyways? Not exactly one to keep up on current events.”
“You wish,” he spat. “It’s irradiated, but at least it’s fresh. You should try it sometime, ghoul.”
He was caught between answering his question and quite frankly telling the ghoul to stay out of their business, but there was little else to do but converse. Even if his company was unfavorable.
“Cleansing.”
“Only thing that will cleanse this world is time. You know what Boston looked like after the bombs dropped? Probably not, given the sort of false-prophet garbage you’re probably fed on the daily.
Let me tell you right now- this place looks a whole lot better since then. People are rebuilding, finally. Last thing we need is a bunch of holier-then-thou assholes trying to ‘cleanse’ the world again. Or did you not catch what happened last time?”
Still, he spoke evenly, not making any move for his weapon. No point in it. Although he certainly was ready to make a run for it in case poking at the lion proved fatal.
“What makes you think you’re any better?”
[Actual Good Neighbor, Red]:
It was actually pretty amusing to watch, although Red knew enough about the mayor’s little temper to not say anything of it. Once the other looked…. decent, he shifted again.
“Alright- lets go. Before anyone else has a chance to see our great mayor look like he just experienced the bombs all over again.” He’d lead the way out of the mayor’s quarters, out onto the street where the pieces of the previous night were still being picked up.
One wall, that opposite of the mayor’s balcony, had several lines of red paint on it.
“You got a gun kid?”
“Ya know the sayin’, ‘don’t bring a knife to a gun fight’? Pretty much me right now,” John replied, touching the familiar worn hilt of his bowie knife that stayed securely in a rough leather sheathe strapped to his thigh. A very used weapon that now one really expects at their throat when he’s talking to them.
“Can’t find my gun, so I’ll have to replace it later.” The mayor admitted, rubbing the palm of his hand over a fairly hairless, rough scalp, “Let’s get this treasure hunt on a road.”
“Might be able to find it in the ditch. Probably a bit water-logged, but I’m sure that robot in town can fix it....” Her name escaped him. It had been a while since he had done business with her, but recalled her products being fairly good quality.
Without further ado, he led the Mayor out of town, off to the alformentioned ditch by the road he found the other in. A corner of his hat peeked up from under the grime there.
It was a start.
“Must have been one hell of a kicker.”
Plops some baby mirelurks and large mirelurk meat onto Red's counter "Hope ya like seafood!" been away for weeks to get these
The quite sudden gift made Red pause in mid-chop, the brahmin meat on his cutting board flopping off to the wayside as a result. His mouth hang slightly ajar, cigarette still perched on his lip.
“You went as far as the sea, then?”
“Indeedy I did, up to the coast, swam a bit, wrestlin’ some crabs and back ‘ere” He grinned, hands on his hips with pride, his clothing mostly ruined, scrapes and cuts here and there with crappy attempts of bandaging. A real mess, but the grin was big and happy. Surprisingly the only part of the man that was clean was his beard and face, with only small finger smudges.
Red sighed, but as always Joseph’s smile was contagious. He moved over to the other, ushering him behind the counter and to the makeshift bathroom and it’s mismatched medicine cabinet.
“A bit jealous. Been a while since I’ve bothered going to the coast. It looking any better?”
"be still"
Send “Be still” for my muse’s reaction to yours trailing a hand up their thigh and shirt.
The first touch made him jolt- the other’s hand warm enough to be felt through dead skin, which was rare enough on it’s own. Still, he made no move to stop it, even when warm fingers sneaked up the side of his shirt..
“You been getting into the liquor…?”
“Pfffhehe…ha, maaate,y'not the first ghoul I’ve been around or even with, haha” He’d snicker, leaning back as the drunkenly giggle fit occurred, patting the ghouls chest “Can rad-way later, yaaa? But if Red doesn’t wanna,I get it. Beard can be too much and so so” He slipped the hand from the hip off and rubbed it over where he bit
“Don’t mind it. More worried about you waking up tomorrow and not remembering any of this.” Which seemed a pretty valid worry for a ghoul. Wouldn’t be the first time.
“Suppose it’s fine fooling around a little bit, but ain’t keen on anything more then that. At least until you’ve sobered up some.”
"Red? do you like animals? Do you like dogs?"
He almost flinched at the mention of dogs.
“Why? Were you wantin’ one?”
“Sounds like a plan” He grinned, taking his place at the bench and waiting for the slab of meat. Once placed in front of him, Joseph began chopping, trying to keep the sizes consistently the same size. “Been a while since cooked with another”
“Yeah, same here. Not like Coop ever managed to help much.” The ghoul chuckled, finding it quite pleasant to be sharing the space. Beat being alone, if he was being honest with himself.
He got the broth going, putting in all sorts of things sans the carrots to cook up. Thankfully pre-war left him better off for figuring out what sort of spices would taste the best.
And being smart enough to find and dry the spices himself.
Sorry for being so inactive over here! I’ve been feeling more safe and secure on my other blog @vaultbb.
Hopefully I can stop being a weenie and get back into the groove of things here.
@atomiccourier
“You look lost.”
The man sighed in defeat. “It’s that obvious huh? My pip-boy’s on the fritz and I don’t have the stuff needed to fix it. And I’d know where to go to get said stuff if I had a working pip-boy.”
“Typical of Vault tech garbage. No offence.” He sighed, shaking his head but seeming to accept the story as the truth, weapon lowering to the wayside.
“I might have what you need laying around. Could patch it up for you, for a few caps or an errand..”
“Would take 50 caps a night for it. Know it is a little steep, but it’s a distance to the rooms in Goodneighbor or Diamond City. Not going to get anywhere more secure, either. Suppose I’d take ammo trade as well.”
He popped open his own beer with an opener sitting near by, taking a nice swig of it and enjoying the cool after a rather warm day. Nice thing about generators was refrigeration wasn’t impossible.
“Yeah. He still comes by once in a blue moon to make sure I haven’t gone feral on him, but for the most part it’s just me these days. Easier to defend that way. Last thing I need is a bunch of hired hands getting between me and the next idiot Supermutant that decides to knock on the wall.”
The price wasn’t greatly out of line, considering the location it was a rather prime ticket considering the more harms out there than security. “Not a bad amount, may have to give you half the caps and half the ammunition if I intend to stay.” The brunette chuckled.. But caps really weren’t flowing in the way they used to.
The beer was just as he remembered it, sort of. The hops in it had died down slightly in flavor but with the dark bottles it did a great job preserving them. Taking his own long sip, the pre war officer cleared his throat and looked back up to the ghoul.
“Definitely sounds tough. I couldn’t even imagine the process of getting this place started, never the less the trouble of having hired help. Would be a nightmare.”
“Tell me about it. Took years just to get the walls up, what with looking after Coop and all. Boy wasn’t that much of a handful when I first got him, but I’ll tell you- he was a right spitfire after things settled. Can’t remember how many times he scared me half to death by sneaking out.
Sometimes I feel like this wall ended up being more helpful in keeping him in then keeping anything out there out.”
"Red? do you like animals? Do you like dogs?"
He almost flinched at the mention of dogs.
“Why? Were you wantin’ one?”
He’d lean on the kitchens counter, smirking at the lil’ ghoul “whatever you like, Reddy” Joseph followed the ghoul behind the counter, not minding if they were shoulder to head. “So, what shall I grab”
Reddy. He almost rolled his eyes at that one, but didn’t find himself completely infuriated with the pet name.
For whatever reason.
“Different time I’d take advantage of that wording. Suppose we could just have stew- easy enough to make and gives a good amount of calories. Should have some pre-war broth mix down there, and some bottled water…”
None of the irradiated stuff tonight, sadly.
That received a hearty laugh, the big man smiling fondly at the ghoul. “I don’ know what y'mean by taking advantage of that wording. But sounds good mate, anythin’ you make I’ll eat, except one thin’” He raised a single finger “Raw carrot, cant eat it and utensuls’ must be clean’d after use. Allergies and such, sure don’ wanna scare ya with a swellin’ face” He’d chuckle.
“A swelling face wouldn’t so much scare me as it would worry me. Thanks for letting me know.” Would probably just be best to skip carrots altogether then. They took forever to cook anyways.
“Alright, think I got a plan. Lets get started. I’ll get you to cut up the Brahmin meat while I start on the broth.”
redsrocket:
“Watch my words? You’re the one threatening genocide. Only so long you can step on a people before they decide to do something about it. You’re just lucky I’m not one to swing first.” He sucked sugar from his fingertips, putting the now-empty box down.
“Mmhm. What do you eat?”
He rolled his eyes at the ghoul’s poor attempt at a threat, and kept watching through the window. He didn’t want to be with the ghoul in the first place, but he didn’t want to get ambushed either.
“I eat meats, fruits, whatever vegetables I can find. Things that aren’t 200 years past the expiration date.”
“Doctors? Can’t say I have. There is a doctor that moves around with the caravans, but I don’t think anyone actually looks for him.” More of a last resort.
“Why, you needing some patching up?”
“No no, this is a bunch of doctors,” she replies, inching closer to the gas station, eyeing the shelter for something she could use to cook. “I don’t need healing though, I’m… I was working with them as a guard and we got separated,” And I’m worried, she held in that last thought.
