Before he left I stared at him like an old photograph, taking note of every detail. Studying his face like a map with no final destination, I gazed at every feature. I fixated on his freckles, that were becoming more and more prominent as the hot Mississippi summer crept up. I admired the creases around his mouth that were a result of his booming laugh. As we embraced I traced the structure of his back with my fingertips, desperately holding on as if the feeling of his warm skin against mine was already fleeting. With his lips against mine my heart jumped out of my chest, just like it had that February night. I looked deep into his blue-green eyes but they did not look back into mine. Before he left I stared at him like an old photograph, because I knew he would never come back.
