They bit back words, words that Toriel could not hear. They wanted to say that dying never stopped them before. They wanted to tell her about all the times that they were burned alive or stabbed to death, but they wouldn’t. She couldn’t understand. Asgore understood, but Toriel was different.
“I’m not going to stop. Who even cares if I die? Only I will hurt, I probably won’t even tell you. Then I’ll get back up and go on with my life before that’s-” What’s what they did. “That’s how it goes. I won’t stop trying to tell the people I’m trying to help.”
They didn’t realize it, but their tone was becoming rather angry. “And if you don’t like that, I always have my own apartment I can live in! You can’t stop me!”
They put a hand over their mouth as soon as they said it. Oh, they hadn’t mean that. “I-I mean, I don’t want to go, but mom, I can’t stop being who I am. What happens happens…”
Toriel gasped. The room went quiet as she searched for words. Anger faded from her expression.
“You are very, very good. You are kind... you are loving. You do not want to hurt anyone, and you believe in everyone. That is truly wonderful.” She steadied herself. “But, while everyone deserves mercy, you deserve mercy, too. You must treat yourself well. You must learn when to protect your gentle heart from those who would harm you, no matter how much you wish they would change. Sometimes, you cannot sway them. Sometimes, they will not listen. And sometimes, it will leave you in ruin...”
“If you choose to go, I cannot stop you,” her voice wavered, “but I want only to protect you, my child. Only this. That is all I have ever wanted.”
It felt so familiar -- this, again, standing in front of a different door in a different place. The walls angled inward, constricting, her breath hitched, the clocks and the world around them stilled.
She couldn’t lose another one. Not like this.
“If you cannot help that man, it does not mean you are abandoning him. It means that you are simply not the person meant to do it. Please, do not follow him. Please, do not listen to him, and do not let him change your heart.
“You may go to him once has learned his lesson. But until that day, long in the future, this is my final say.” She looked down at Frisk sternly, no longer any trace of tears in her eyes. “And you must listen to me.”
