Sunday Places Notebook: A Milano Storybook
Welcome to Sunday Places Notebook’.
Here are a scattershot of images from a special place that have left an indelible mark.
Milano is a city where fashion, art, and design continue to embolden old world architecture with daring new beauty and perspectives. I love the eclectic montage.
I focus on the not-so obvious details and often they reside within textures, patterns, colour, and lurk in the shadows where the contrasting light spreads its life over simple or complex form.
People are as much part of the inspiration. They fill the cobblestone walkways and add a moment-in-time layer to each fascination.
The Brera Design District is where the stone Palazzos, once large, splendid residences, open their doors to the most unique design and art installations, particularly during Design Week in April.
This is where creators and seers converge to celebrate thought-provoking artistry that stretches the imagination within a grounding of classical beauty. It’s a magical place and, for me, this district offers the greatest inspiration, exceeding Salone del Mobile, the largest annual trade fair of its kind.
Yes, this city opens its old heart to the young artist and allows colourful brushstrokes to spread out onto its historic facades and technology to compete with hand craft. The great Murano chandeliers coexist with organic engineered plastic luminaires of asymmetric silhouette. Here there is no competition because there will always be respect for the classic and, in fact, the city’s iconic artistry offers a fertile ground for new ideas of beauty. It’s a lovely circle.
I’m an end-of-day window shopper. I imagine what may sit on the back shelves or locked display cases, but mostly, I’m inspired by the reflections of the city as they merge with the showcased scenes. Sometimes I see them as a beautiful storybook cover.
I hope these images serve to open an intimate window into the city of Milano. Make the inspirations and the beauty that lies within them your own. We each see them differently and herein lies the magic.
