" — wait. Me?" They look around, hoping she’s talking to… Anyone else. "Y- you might have. I come around these parts from time to time… Ahh — why?”

”Yeah, you -- you see anyone else I could be talking to?" She waves a hand in a motion that's supposed to encompass the general area."I'm supposed to know everyone who comes around here, but I don't know you, 'cept maybe in passing. You have something to do here?"

"I sorta just showed up, to be honest. I do a lot of exploring and sticking my nose in places I probably shouldn’t, to be honest. Should I— Should I leave? I’m getting the feeling I’m not welcome here, by the sounds of it.”

“No -- 's fine, 's not like it's restricted or anything, 's just... we don't normally get new faces down here. So I'm just... surprised? Something about the location is off-putting, I guess."

"Uh…you can call me Lucida - or Lucy if you want. Ms. Gautreaux makes me feel - old. Cliche as that sounds.

But yeah - ghosts are my thing. You got a ghost problem?”

"Yeah, I guess so? I mean, I've never seen it, but -- it's sure scaring some of the little'uns."

"So what do you do to get rid of a ghost?"

"Miss... Gautreaux? I'm told you, uh... know ghosts? 'bout them, I mean."

    "No, it’s more the ‘neglected room’ look currently. I—I don’t think we have a ladder anywhere nearby. You might be able to find one if you ask around. However…if you’re feeling adventurous, I’d be fine with you climbing up on the filing cabinets. Just…don’t tell anyone."

"Aww, I'm always adventurous. Just point me to some spare bulbs and I'll be up in a flash. It stays 'tween me and you, promise."

"Well, you could either call it a clubhouse or an informal community center, depending on how generous you're willing to be. It's about two stories down from ground level. Are you here by invite, or didja just... find your own way?"

   "It helps being back here out of the way. I know you won’t be able to spend all of your time here, but if you ever need to escape the umpteenth retelling of someone’s evening escapades—my door is open. As for—is it really that bad in here? I mean, I think it is but…that would be great actually. Helpful. I might be able to read something without squinting today."

  "Sure thing! Figured it might be for some type of ambiance or something. The gritty detective feel, y'know? -- you got a ladder 'round here, or do I need to, like, climb up on some file cabinets?"

"Oh, that’s a loaded question. Some people here might be a bit…unkind to me but I think they’d be on better behavior for someone like yourself. Honestly, that’s for the best because I’d rather they berate me than a high schooler." She smiled, opening her mouth to add something to that statement but thinking better of it at the last minute. "—Anyway, if you encounter or know of any names, you can come to me about them. I know a little bit about almost everyone here but I don’t want to speak badly about anyone you might not even meet. I can’t have that coming back to me."

  "Heh, can't argue with that sentiment." It pulls her lips into a small smile. "Best not to make any enemies -- and best for me to not assume the worst. I'll... be sure to do that, if I need to. -- d'you need anything done while I'm here? Papers shredded, labels written, plants watered? Or I can, uh, replace the bulbs that seem to be out en masse here, I'm real good at that."
