Winter came at dawn, and Lucerys came with it.
The snow began before sunrise, falling in slow, patient flakes that drifted rather than fell, as if the sky itself took care not to disturb the world below. By the time the eastern bells rang, the roofs of Shiganshina lay white and hushed, courtyards softened beneath a clean, unbroken cover. Stone edges blurred. Footprints vanished almost as soon as they were made. This was not the fleeting dust of autumn nor the teasing chill that came and went. This was the first true breath of winter, settled and certain of itself, a snow that promised to stay.
In the rookery, a white crow arrived.
Its wings beat once, twice, scattering frost from the parapet before it settled, bearing word to the realm that winter had come at last. Those who glimpsed it crossing the pale morning sky would speak of the timing for years to come. Of how the bird rose just as the bells below began to ring for a birth. Men would call it an omen. Women would name it a blessing. The old would only nod, as though something long awaited had finally stepped into its proper place.
Ares stood at the window of the Lordâs Solar and watched the snow gather along the stone ledge, unmoving. He had not slept. Few within the city of stone had. The longest night had stretched itself thin and finally broken under the strain of Princess Mikasaâs labour.
Now it was over.
The fire behind him burnt low, its warmth steady but subdued, as though it too were waiting. Ares rested his hand against the cold stone of the window frame and felt the contrast keenly. Outside, winter claimed the world in white silence. Inside, life had answered.
He had heard it just before dawn: the first cry, sharp and sudden, cutting clean through the tension that had bound the halls all night. Not long after, his father had been summoned and gone at once, leaving the solar with a final, unreadable look and a hand briefly resting on Aresâs shoulder.
That had been hours ago. Since then, Ares had done nothing but wait.
âA boy,â a servant had whispered in the corridor.
âA strong one,â another had answered.
At the news, Ares felt neither anger nor disappointment, neither the sharp pang of displacement nor the fear of being set aside. Instead, anticipation stirred beneath his calm. A brother. He had a brother now. The thought kindled a warmth no hearth could rival. After long years as the only son, there was now a small life bound to his own, a fragile thing that would grow alongside him A boy to shield, to guide, to stand before if the world ever turned cruel. The realisation set his chest aching with it. The want of a sibling was something he had carried inside him, never spoken aloud, as private and persistent as breath. And now it had come to him, unasked and undeniable.
A little brother.
At last, footsteps sounded in the corridor.
Finally, footsteps approached.
Ares turned as the door opened and Lord Eren stepped inside. Fatigue lined his fatherâs face, unmistakable and deep, yet beneath it something gentler shone through, something Ares had never quite seen there before. Relief, perhaps. Or awe.
âYou may come now,â his father said.
Ares did not trust his voice to follow, so he only nodded.
They walked together through the waking keep. Fires were being fed along the walls, embers coaxed back to life. Servants moved with purpose now, no longer whispering. Smiles slipped free where worry had lived only hours before. The keep exhaled.
âA boy?â Ares asked quietly, unable to keep it in.
Eren glanced at him. âA son,â he confirmed. âLoud enough to announce himself to the stones.â
Ares smiled, wide and unguarded. âGood.â
Eren huffed softly. âI thought you might say that.â
âAnd Mikasa?â Ares pressed.
âTired,â his father said, then added, âBut content. She has asked for you.â
That startled him. âShe did?â
âShe said the babe ought to learn your voice early.â The lord smiled. âAnd I am certain she is eager for you both to meet.â
Ares found no words to reply. Too many feelings rose at once. Pride. Relief. Something perilously close to gratitude. They gathered in his chest like a sudden tide, leaving him silent before them all. He could only smile back.
The birthing chamber lay deep within the princessâs apartments, where the walls were thickest and the cold could not intrude. Warmth wrapped around Ares the moment he stepped inside. The scent of clean linen, beeswax, and woodsmoke filled the air. Candles burnt low, their light pooling softly against grey stone.
Princess Mikasa lay propped against pillows, wrapped in furs, her dark hair braided back from her face. She looked exhausted, yes, but there was a calm to her that anchored the room.
When she saw Ares, her lips curved into a tired smile.
âSo,â she said softly, âyou survived the waiting.â
âBarely,â Ares replied, bowing his head. âI would not recommend it.â
She laughed, then winced, and Eren stiffened at once. Mikasa waved his concern away and beckoned Ares closer. âCome,â she said. âYou may meet Lucerys.â
Lucerys.
The babe slept in her arms, swaddled thickly against the cold world he had entered. His face was flushed, his mouth slack with sleep, and one tiny hand curled against his chest.
Ares stopped short, breath catching.
âHe is⊠small,â he said.
âFor now,â Mikasa answered. âHe seems determined to grow.â
âHe arrived with the snow,â Ares murmured, reverent.
âYes,â she said. âAs though winter wished to greet him properly.â
Eren stepped closer, resting a hand on her shoulder. âOr guard him.â
Mikasa looked to Ares. âWould you like to hold him?â
The question struck deeper than he expected. âI would,â he said at once, then more carefully, âIf you trust me.â
âI would not have asked otherwise.â
She guided him to sit, her movements precise despite her weariness. âSupport his head. Yes, like that.â
Lucerys was warmer than Ares had imagined, heavier too, solid in a way that surprised him. The weight of him settled into Aresâs arms as though it belonged there.
âWell met, little brother,â Ares whispered.
Lucerys stirred, fingers curling weakly into the fabric of Aresâs sleeve.
âHe holds fast,â Eren observed.
âHe knows his brother,â Mikasa said.
Ares laughed softly. âI waited all night for you,â he told the child. âI would do it again.â
Lucerys slept on, untroubled.
Outside, the snow continued to fall. Winter closed its hand around the Seven Kingdoms. Within the chamber, by fire and candlelight, Ares held his brother for the first time and swore in silence that though the child had come with winter, the cold would never be allowed to reach him.
me thinking about lord eren and princess mimi going out for a simple ride on horseback, then, of course, a snow storm rolls in forcing them to seek shelter in an old folly and there, of course, they fuck đââïž
i was watching ophelia yesterday and, yeah, yeah, the whole tragedy and doomed love story hit as always⊠but then my mind wandered. imagine prince eren falling for one of his queen motherâs ladies-in-waiting, mikasa, the daughter of an impoverished nobleman. they canât really be together, of course; mikasa isnât the right match, not in the eyes of the court. still, eren becomes utterly taken with her, with her gentleness, her sensitivity, the way she feels so unlike the shallow girls that surround him. he finds excuses to see her, to talk to her, just to exist near her. and naturally, king grisha has other plans: a marriage to a wealthy noblewoman, a match worthy of the crown. so eren has to fight for her, for their love, even when itâs forbidden. oh, the forbidden love of it all.
Under the dazzling lights of a golden era, love sparkles brighter than the stars.

Bed of Roses: An eremika regency AU â long snippet.
dear reader, here it is, finally! a long snippet of what will be bed of roses, my eremika regency au featuring a marquess eren, a himbo looking for trouble, and mikasa, the icy princess who really canât stand anyoneâs nonsense, lol. for now, iâve planned it as a three-shot, and in true deaddolphins fashion, each chapter is quite long, lol. but anyway, i thought iâd share a little something from the start, where the characters' personalities and dynamics begin to take shape.
as always, this is just a snippet, and itâs by no means the final version. i like to keep the final version on ao3, so if you spot any inconsistencies, itâs because iâm still tweaking things as i write, jotting them down, and then fixing them during editing. and of course, there wasnât much editing done yet.
thank you so much, as always, for reading!
and by the way! this is for day 5 of @eremikavintage specifically for the 19th century day, hehe.
Foremost among them is Lord Eren Jaeger, the 13th Marquess of Shiganshina, making his long-awaited debut in Parliament. Emerging from mourning, he is a figure certain to stir both admiration and whispers. And where the marquess goes, the Dowager Marchioness follows. Lady Carla, it seems, is quite intent on securing her son a wife, though which young lady will capture him remains the question on every tongue.
Yet another intrigue blossoms. At Christmas, Lady Carla called upon her dear friend, the Duke of Stohess, only to find him in charge of two wards: his nephew, Mr. Falco Ackerman and his niece, Miss Mikasa Ackerman. It is for sure that, at twenty-three, Miss Mikasa is no debutante, but her beauty and poise have charmed Rosemoon Castle and caught the Marchionessâs sharp eye.
It is said that the duke seeks a titled husband for his niece, and Lady Carla, ever eager to play matchmaker, is determined to see her shine as the diamond of the Season. But could her ambitions extend further? Might she envision none other than her own son as the young ladyâs match?
A marquess of promise, a lady of uncommon grace, surely a union to set all Mitras aflutter. Yet, my dears, it is the unseen threads of the Season that so often weave the most delicious tales.
Until next time, when fresh ink meets eager eyes.
BED OF ROSES: A SOCIETY PAPER WITH THE SWEETEST STORIESÂ
March 28, 1813
Hannesâ Gentlemen Club in Mitras
April 2, 1813
Eren Benedict Jaeger, the thirteenth Marquess of Shiganshina, slowly lifted his head from his folded arms.
Oh, heavens above. One could scarcely imagine a more pitiable state.
Ladies used to claim him the most beautiful man in all of Paradis, some even said angels had a hand in his creation (though that was likely said in the heat of the ballrooms, where the air was heavy with flattery). Now, though, his brown hair was a mess of curls, his emerald eyes bloodshot. A bruise marked one, still fresh (a fight, perhaps?). As for his scent? One need not be particularly astute to discern that the Marquess had not met with a bath in several days.
It was not that the Marquess had neglected personal hygiene, though, he was a man of exacting standards in that regard. But rather that his twenty-eighth birthday had unfolded with such enthusiasm and recklessness that now, as he lifted his head, it seemed the full consequence of the eveningâs excesses had come to call.Â
A small sniff, a look around to his surroundings and the realisation of his current location was the least surprising aspect of this debacle.
The room was littered with glasses and bottles. Cigarette smoke hung in the air, as rancid as the stench that wafted through Mitrasâ streets on the hottest of summer days. And, of course, his friends, scattered about the room, seemed to be in a state not dissimilar to his ownâor perhaps worse. Some appeared so still, that Eren wondered for a moment if they were still alive altogether.
Yet, despite the ruin so clearly evident in their appearances, everyone seemed more than alive and oddly content.Â
As had been duly noted, the Marquess had reached his twenty-eight years, and as tradition demanded, he had celebrated with his closest companions. There had been no lack of drink, no shortage of jokes. After three days of aimless wandering around the city, they had found themselves at Hannesâ, the most fashionable of menâs clubs.Â
Right.Â
Hannesâ club, one of his favourite places since he was merely an earl heir to a marquess.
Thatâs where he was.
After all the party and drinking.
After he had fled from his motherâs ultimatum.
Just after promising her that as soon as the Season arrived, he would finally begin in earnest to fulfill his duty as the Marquess of Shiganshina.Â
Drat it!
Eren looked down at his hands. Theyâd finally stopped shaking.
It had taken onlyâwhat? A dozen brandies and soda? Two dozen of ratafias? Three bottles, perhaps?
No matter. He had celebrated as any man in his position would. After all, he believed he had earned it. With Aprilâs arrival and the Season looming, it was all but certain his mother would soon thrust him squarely onto the Marriage Mart. Naturally, he would be little more than a prey for the mamas who knew perfectly well that he was both available, and, to add insult to injury, possessed of a rather fine title and fortune.
Drat it! (Again.)
Eren shook his head, trying to rid himself of the troubling image of being swarmed by eager female hunters. But no amount of brandy or soda could quite drown the nightmare lodged in his mind. The truth was inescapable: sooner or later he was about to be thrust into matrimony and no clever footwork would see him free of it. Not when the formidable Lady Carla, the Dowager Marchioness of Shiganshina, was his mother, and had made it abundantly clear that she expected to see him married and with children. All at the earliest possible opportunity, naturally.
âMore.â Eren raised a hand, signaling the barmaid. âAnother.â
Then he lifted his gaze and fully realised his nearest friend was still, astonishingly, breathing. Thank God for small mercies!
âFor a long moment I thought you were dead,â said Lord Jean Kirchstein, son of the third Earl of Trost, eyeing him from across the table. âI was wondering how to manage the task of delivering your body to your lady mother.â
âNot another word about her.â The marquess shut his eyes, wincing as a treacherous sliver of light cut through. âIâll have more than my fill of her from April to July. I can already feel it approaching.â He sighed, petulant. âA little respite, if you please.â
Kirchstein chuckled. âSheâs truly determined to secure you a wife, isnât she?â
Eren tossed his head back in irritation. Not the wisest of moves. âYes, yes, that is the prevailing sentiment.â He touched his temple, wincing. Drat, how it throbbed. âThat I am nearly thirty, that I ought to cease my... frivolities, that the title is already mine, that I need a wife, that I need to produce an heirââhe made a gesture with his handââand a great many other thingsâ
âWell, if I were in your position, the notion of a wife and making heirs would hardly strike fear in my heart. In truth, I find it rather a pleasant task.â
The marquess grumbled, his tone as sour as his expression, âWe shall see how you fare when it is your turn.â
He was staring at the table as though it held the secrets of the universe, nearly mesmerized, when the raucous shouts of the other gentlemen pierced through his reverie. For a weekday morning, Hannesâs club was undeniably crowded. Were they all, gentlemen, drowning their sorrows over the opening of the Marriage Mart in drink? Quite likely.
âWhat are they saying?â Eren asked, resting his chin on his hand. The noise of these sapskulls speaking all at once was enough to make his head throb, and the dizziness clouded his ability to make sense of even half of it.
âBefore you dozed off, they were discussing some wager, I believe,â said Kirchstein. âBut I donât believe youââ
The man had barely finished speaking when Eren rose swiftly from his seat. A wager? That was certainly the quickest route to capture his attention.
He had started down this path the moment he set foot in college at the tender age of thirteen, where groups of young scoundrels eagerly swarmed around him. They harassed him for being the son of the Marquess of Shiganshina, at that time, not the wealthiest man in the kingdom, but certainly one with a lineage that stretched back to the mad king who had wed his lady knight. The fools were eager to know if madness ran in the family, and they had Eren, wild and unrefined, to test their theories.
Young Lord Eren, it seemed, was happy to oblige. Instead of letting them win, he fought back with a ferocity that only increased the more they ridiculed him. At first, he lost, and terribly so. Notes of bad behaviour and injuries kept flying home to Crimson Hall. But in time, he surpassed them all, until those ruffians were the ones trailing behind, nursing bruised egos.
It was there, amidst the chaos, that he formed a bond with Jean Kirchstein, and together they began earning the respect of every ruffian on the school grounds. By the end of his first year, being part of the young Lordâs clique had become the very pinnacle of social aspiration. And so they grewâthose boys becoming men, and the more they grew, the more they indulged. Horse racing, cockfighting, boxingânothing was off the table. And jests, so many jests.
It was here, in the heart of these contests, that Eren saw the true potential of his skills: the art of betting. What began with three shillings soon blossomed into ten, then fifteen, then twenty. Rarely did he lose, and with each victory, the Eren Jaeger name became more closely linked to fortunes won and lost in the most notorious ways.
This, of course, drove his parents to utter frustration. They found themselves utterly incapable of controlling the future Marquis of Shiganshina. Eren's behaviour had become so outrageous that, at the age of twenty-one, Lord Grisha had severed his financial support, hoping that the penniless son might finally come to his senses and pull himself together.
Naturally, this only served to stoke the fires of Eren's gambling obsession. The Earl of Crimsonwood, heir to Crimson Hall and the Marquisate of Shiganshina, was, after all, a man who had never met a wager he didnât like. Wherever there was a betting house, or any chance for a jest, there Eren could be foundâhis name now synonymous with high stakes and reckless abandon. And there he remained, even a year after the death of the twelfth Marquess, Grisha, who had the misfortune of choking on a piece of meat during dinner. With that untimely demise, Eren found himself finally inheriting the title and the marquisate, though, one might argue, he was little more prepared for it than he had been the day before.
However, being one of the most powerful men in the kingdomâjust beneath the Duke of Stohess, the Duke of Yalkel, and the Great Duke of Sthoessâhad done little to straighten him out. The title and influence, it seemed, only served to amplify his habits rather than temper them.
And that day, on Hanneâs club, to further cement his notoriety, still reeling from the nightâs excesses, Eren stumbled toward a group of men, all engaged in heated discussion while scribbling in a book. Not just any book, of courseâThe Betting Book.
âYou really must not, not this time,â Kirchstein urged, his voice betraying a trace of something resembling distress. âIâve heard the ones involved, and I daresay someone is likely to shoot your arse this time.â
âDonât be ludicrous,â Eren said, brushing it off. âNo one is going to shoot me.â
âNo, I really mean it, Itâsââ
But before he could elaborate further, the voice of Baron Porco Galliard, rang out. âAh, Marquess Jaeger, my good fellow! Weâve been most eagerly awaiting for you.â
Eren allowed a smile to curl at the corner of his lips. âI am well aware,â he said with a hint of amusement, âthat no discussion of wagers is complete without my presence. Now, do tellâwhat are we about here?â
âAh, we do hope to make the Season a bit more... stimulating, shall we say?â
Baron Galliard chuckled and the men around him shared in the mirth as if some secret understanding had passed between them. The marquess, for his part, felt a rushâlike the sudden clarity of a man who has just been sober for the first time in years. He felt as though he might, if called upon, run a marathon, or at least entertain the idea of doing so, however preposterous it might be.
âCome now,â he urged, âdo indulge me.â
âIâve heard that your mother is engaged in some little enterprise of her own, if you can call it that.â Baron Galliard drew out a journal, and showed it around as if it were a sacred document. âAnd, would you believe it, theyâve already christened her the diamond of the seasonâbefore the season has even begun!â
The men exchanged looks of genuine surprise, while Eren merely raised an eyebrow. What was all this about? He was, quite frankly, in the dark.
âSo?â he asked, his voice cautious.
âSeduce her!â Galliard cried, his voice carrying a touch of too much enthusiasm.Â
The rest of the gentlemen, clearly delighted by the prospect of some mischief, eagerly echoed the sentiment, as if they had just proposed an entirely reasonable course of action.
Eren, for his part, was positively appalled. Yes, appalled!
He was no saint, of course. A gambler, a drinker, a son who had spent years disappointing his parents. But a seducer of virgins? That was a line he had no intention of crossing, not for all the gilded invitations in the world. His reputation, questionable as it was, had never stooped so low. He might have doubted whether âgentlemanâ was the proper title for him, but this? Never. He should not, could not, would not, besmirch an innocent debutante.
âI will not be deflowering a debutante,â he said, as succinctly as though heâd just declared a preference for tea over brandy.
Galliardâs laughter rang out, the sound of it almost absurd in its mockery. âOh, come now! Sheâs not even one!â
The marquess shook his head in solemn refusal. âIâm not interested. I wonât bed a virgin, I say.â
The group of men chuckled, no doubt imagining something far more salacious than what Eren had in mind, and somewhere beneath his unease, a flicker of anger stirred.
Before he could voice it, however, Kirchstein interceded, his tone almost pleading. âLetâs be off, now. Your mother will be the death of me if youâre not back to your house before the Parliament sessions start.â
As the Marquess and the son of the Earl of Trost prepared to make their exit, Galliardâs voice rose once more, dripping with mischief.
âFine, if you wonât take her to your bed, at least steal a kiss! Or tell me you donât even want to press lips?â
Well, that did seem rather more sensible.
Eren pivoted sharply, leaving Kirchstein to grumble behind him, no doubt about something far less entertaining.Â
âWrite my damn name down,â he said with no small amount of exasperation. âI, Eren Jaeger, the Marquess of Shiganshina, will steal a kiss from the so-called Diamond of the Season, and to prove it, Iâll ask for a token of her love and show it to all of you.â
A wave of applause surged through the crowd, the kind of noise that followed the most ridiculous and ill-advised bets, which this undoubtedly was. Baron Galliard, not one to waste a moment, scribbled it all down in the betting book, his penmanship as showy as the occasion. For added legitimacy, he had no less than five witnesses sign it, including the ever-dutiful Lord Connie Springer, the Earl of Ragakko, Sir Mylius Zeramuski, and Mr. Marlowe Freudenbergâeach one, no doubt, silently wondering what had possessed the marquess to act so.
To celebrate the spectacle, Hannes immediately poured more brandy and ratafia, and Eren, in a timely escape from his headache, chose to lose himself in yet more drink and merriment. The Parliament sessions could very much wait.
âAnd whatâs that grim expression for?â the marquess asked, as he caught sight of Kirchstein once more. âHas someone died?â
âWell, you,â he replied, grimly. âEither when the season ends, or sooner.â
âAre you suggesting it for the alcohol?â He looked at his glass. âNonsenseââEren dismissed it with a waveââit does nothing to me, and I can quit at any time.â
Jean shook his head. âNo, no, itâs not the drink. Itâs your spectacular idiocy, Shiganshina. Youâve just sealed your fate in Hannesâs betting book. How... charmingly pathetic. But coming from you, it is not surprising at all.â
âOh, do be reasonable; itâs only a kiss. A kiss and a few words that will prove I remain the favourite at the betting-table. Just that, Jeanbo.â
Kirchsteinâs eyes twitched a little bit at the mention of his childhood nickname, but he pressed on with the matter at hand. âIndeed, provided, of course, that the so-called diamond of the season is not, alas, the Duke of Stohessâs niece.â
Eren blinked. The sentence struck him like a draught under a door. âWhat did you just say?â
âThat this girlâyour wagerâis the Duke of Stohessâ niece, you simpleton, little halfwit.â
The young Marquess of Shiganshina felt old, familiar chills coursing through his body. Threats from the formidable DukeâLevi Ackermanâloomed suddenly in his mind. The memory was precise. The most dreadful reprimands. The sort that makes one consider distant shores.
âIf you meddle in my affairs again,â the Duke had said in his most even tone, âif you even cross me, you imbecile, I will shoot you. I will shoot you to death, and then I shall leave the country. Do not suppose I am speaking idly. Do not ever dare to cross my way again!â
âWhy, pray tell, did you not tell me of this earlier?â Eren inquired, his voice carrying the faintest note of unease, though he rather conspicuously cloaked it with a trace of petulance. A talent, truly.. âYou could have, at the very least, told me sooner!â
âIâve been attempting to tell you for some time, you blockhead, dolt! But nooooo, you simply couldnât resist a foolish wager, could you? Now, go aheadâtry to undo it. Youâll become the very joke of the entire club.â
Of course, Kirchstein was correct. Undoing the situation would surely make him the subject of ridicule.
It was no secret that the Duke of Stohess harboured a profound distaste for Eren. A distaste that could scarcely be described by the word âhatredâ, for it was far too mild for what the Duke felt. The tale behind their animosity was not widely known, though it involved a bet, a prank gone awry, and Erenâs unfortunate participation.
Yet, what truly made Eren uneasy was not the Dukeâs well-known ire, but the Dukeâs reputation. The man was a distant cousin to both the King and the Princess Regent, which might have explained his manner, but the tales of his unrelenting successâwhether in evading debts or winning every betâtold a more alarming story. It was said that he had even taken the lives of two men without consequence, and, truth be told, Eren found it entirely plausible that he might very well be the third in line if he dared to cross that invisible line.
It seemed the situation had already spun rather far out of its carefully designed circle, even before it had even begun.
âYouâre positively shitting on your breeches, arenât you?â Kirchstein remarked rather amused. âNow, what, pray tell, do you intend to do about it? Enlighten me, marquess.â
Eren, despite the considerable quantity of alcohol sloshing about his system, managed to marshal a thought or two. Retreat? Certainly not. He wasnât one for running from a wager. To flee the city or feign some sickness, however tempting, seemed more the province of cowards.
At that precise moment, a barmaid passed by with a tray laden with glasses of brandy. Eren seized one and dispatched the beverage through his throat in a single motion. Then he blinked, as if clearing his mind of fog, and turned to Jean.
âWell,â he began, âitâs only a kiss, isnât it? What could possibly go wrong? The Duke need not be privy to this.â He had made his declaration with such certainty that, for a fleeting moment, even he seemed convinced.
Jean said nothing, merely raised an eyebrow. What more could the son of an earl do in the presence of a marquessâespecially one who had just received his title at the peak of Shiganshinaâs coffers? Precisely nothing, he could only watch from afar.
And thus, the fate of the thirteenth Marquess of Shiganshina was sealed.
Meanwhile at St. Maria Palace.
The streets of Mitras were a most impressive sightâif one enjoyed the spectacle of endless carriages blocking the way. Miraculously, the Duke of Stohessâs procession had avoided the chaos. One would credit the dukeâs peculiar obsession with punctuality, for he had insisted they depart two hours before the masses began to clog the thoroughfares.
Miss Mikasa Ackerman, still ensconced in her seat, gazed at the city outside with a certain detached air. She sighed, a sound more of resignation than anything else. If the choice were hers, sheâd be miles away, back at Ackerman Cottage in Green Meadowsâthe only place that had ever truly felt like home, with parents who, at least in her memory, had loved her. But those parents were gone now, and so was her sense of belonging.Â
Now, the only family she had left was her brother, whose doubtful eyes met hers from across the carriage, while beside him sat the man responsible for their presence here: the Duke of Stohess himself. Or their uncle, indeed, though the man in question seemed more a figure of imposed obligation than a true family member.Â
âIt would be most becoming if you smiled,â said the man in a voice that could have frozen a room full of candles.
Mikasa blinked, the very picture of polite confusion. âPardon?â
âDebutantes,â the duke continued, âthey smile, you see. Itâs a tradition, or perhaps a requirement, when presented before the Princess Regent. A smile, in their case, signifies a most joyous day, or something of the sort. Gratitude, I dare to say.â He seemed to find the idea of smiling almost as absurd as his own suggestion. âYou might try it.â
Through the entirety of his speech, the dukeâs attention remained elsewhere. Mikasa blinked again, this time with just a touch more irritation, though it was skillfully concealed.
âAt twenty-three, I think I am hardly a debutante, Your Grace,â she replied, her tone laced with a subtle but unmistakable bite. Falco, ever the attentive brother, noticed it immediately and furrowed his brow in the sort of regret reserved for moments when one regrets having spoken. Nonetheless, she continued, âIâve been reminded of this, as you so kindly pointed out, since the moment I entered your esteemed care.â
âWell, itâs hard to overlook, you see.â The dukeâs gaze remained fixed aheadâwhy, in heavenâs name, did he insist on not looking at them? âI still cannot fathom that my brother had never made the proper introductions. But, as family and tutor of both of you, it is my duty. No doubt about it. And no, I assure you, it does not weigh on me at all.â
Mikasa, however, wasnât quite so certain about the last part. The dukeâs manner gave every impression that he regarded them more as an inconvenience than anything else.
âMy lord father did have a particular fondness for the country life,â she said, carefully fanning herself with slow, measured movementsâjust as she had been taught in the last months. âHe raised us to appreciate the quiet, far from the busy bustle of the ton. In fact, we are just in time to turn the carriage around, Your Grace. We could simply pretend this... event never occurred. My brother and I could return to our beloved cottage.â
âMikasaâŠâ Falco began, his voice heavy with trembling concern.
The dukeâs grey eyes finally settled upon herâso very much like hers, in some odd, unflattering way. âYoung lady,â he said, coldly, âwe have discussed this many times already. You and your brother shall be introduced to society. You will find a suitable husband, and Mr. Falco, for his part, will learn how to take up my title. I thought we had an agreement.â
She shook her head. âI must remind you, Your Grace, that an agreement is a matter of mutual consent. I, for one, do not recall ever agreeing to be thrust into society, nor to have a husband âfoundâ for me.â
The Dukeâs expression hardened, but there was a flicker of somethingâperhaps surpriseâbeneath that well-practiced air of superiority. He had clearly expected more acquiescence.
âI am your guardian, Miss Mikasa,â he said. âYou will do as you are told.â
âMr. Falco, Miss Mikasa,â the duke had said, as if the names alone might cause his throat to tighten. Clearly, familiarity was a foreign concept to him. Mikasa raised an eyebrow, the barest indication of amusement tugging at her lips, but she kept her countenance. First, she had matters to address. Afterwards, she might indulge herself in the amusement of the dukeâs evident emotional restraint.
âI daresay, Your Grace, that if you intend to treat us as mere wards, you might find that I am not so easily... directed.â She paused, allowing her words to settle like dust in the still air. âAs for my brother,â she continued with a glance at Falco, who looked torn between dread and curiosity, âheâs quite capable of making his own decisions, I believe.â
The Duke sighed deeply. âYou will not find the world outside so accommodating, Mikasa. This is the way things are. You are a lady, and as such, your duty is clear.â He shifted on his seat. âYou shall find yourself a husband, a man with both title and wealth, for youâll soon discover that these things matter more than one might care to admit. Naturally, I will take your fondness for the countryside into account, ensuring your chosen groom is one who possesses at least a modicum of empathy for nature.â He glanced at her then, as if the notion of empathy were an afterthought. âNow, if you would be so kind as to behave yourself. We are nearly at our raucous destination and I find myself with a growing headache.â
And so, the duke turned his gaze to look at nothing at allânot even his nephews. A moment of silent detachment, as if the worldâs concerns might be beneath his notice.
Oh, how it must irk Mikasa! The very idea that such a man could be her uncle, how absurd! Were it not for the family tree book, she would have suspected them of playing some cruel joke. A cold, tyrannical figure like him could not possibly be related to her dear and beloved father. And her father! How dare he leave such a will, commanding his brother, the Duke, to take charge of his children? Men, always so intent on remaking the world in their own image!
Mikasa, poor thing, had been worn thin by this struggle. She had fought against it from the very day after her parentsâ funeral. She had refused, time and again, to allow the duke to choose a husband for her. And yes, of course, she wished to marryâbut not on these terms. Not with this man pulling the strings.
One could call her naĂŻve, even foolish, though she had little enough of either to spare. But she did long for a union based on affection, understanding, and comfortâqualities, it seemed, far beyond the reach of titles, wealth, or bloodlines.
Good heavens. Why must her parents have left her to face this fate alone? At twenty-three, she was hardly the naĂŻve debutante of societyâs dreams, yet here she was, to be presented before the Princess Regent, her every move scrutinised as though she were some rare specimen. The Duke of Stohessâs exotic nieceâhow they would gawk! If only she could flee back to the quiet countryside, where the world felt a little more⊠manageable.
But those were just girlish dreams, and it would be better to set them aside.
Soon the carriage came to a halt at the palace gates. The footmen assisted those who required a hand in disembarking. Mikasa, in her flawless gown and feathers, every detail in perfect accordance with the Princess Regentâs demands, was attended to with particular care. The duke was given the same courtesy as well, for he had one lame leg and two fingers conspicuously absent.
As to the cause of his condition, speculation ran rife. There were whispers of a horse accident, a bad one. Some, more fanciful, claimed he had once fought a war for reasons of the heartâa notion both ludicrous and tragic given such a man. But the truth was as elusive as the duke himself. Even his nephews, eager as they were to uncover the mystery, had no more insight than the rest of society. Mikasa, for her part, knew only what her parents had chosen to tell her: nothing.Â
âCome now, it wonât be as dreadful as you imagine,â Falco said by her side, taking her hand with a reassuring smile. He, too, was to be presented to the society as the dukeâs heir in the absence of more male kin. âAt the very least, youâll find a fine gentleman and a home. Youâve always desired a home, my dear Mikasa, and I daresay that desire shall soon be fulfilled.â
Mikasaâs smile was faint, hardly more than a curve of the lips. âOh, Falco, why would I need a home when I already have you and our little cottage?â
A cottage that had already been placed on the market, for it hardly was the sort of residence befitting a dukeâs station.Â
âRest assured, by the end of the season, youâll be in loveâjust as so many have already succumbed to your charms. As for myself, Iâll be content with the notion of nephews. It will be nothing short of splendid, youâll see, dear sister.â
Mikasa merely nodded, the polite gesture masking her thoughts. The dukeâs tiresome theatrics were slowly eroding her brotherâs mind, a fact she could not help but notice. Ah, the allure of being the next Duke of Stohess, surely, that explained it all. How could it not?
Suddenly, a voice bellowed with something that could scarcely be described as anything less than boisterous. âThis way, this way!âÂ
The duke exhaled deeply, his patience visibly thinning.
With little regard for the bustling crowd, a woman made her way into St. Maria Palaceâhome of kings and queensâadorned with all its usual pomp. She wore a silver gown, a shade so pale it seemed almost to glow against her sun-touched skin. The dress seemed to be the epitome of fashion, and it suited her well, just as her brown hair styled in an elegant updo. She was the one and only, the self-appointed matchmaker of the season: the Dowager Marchioness of Shiganshina, lady Carla. And, Godâs heavens, Mikasaâs chaperone for the Season.
It wasnât as though Mikasa had requested it; indeed, the Marchioness had rather insisted upon it.Â
Lady Carla had arrived at Rosemoon Castle in Stohess for Christmas with a manner most conspicuous, shouting as though her words were hardly heard. Upon spotting Mikasa, her eyes widened, and she declared herself utterly fascinated, as though she had stumbled upon a creature as rare as a peacock. It was only when the duke mentioned Mikasaâs impending introduction that the woman wasted no time in making herself known, yet again.
âWell, surely I might serve as her chaperone,â she had declared. âLet us be sensible, duke. You have no taste for parties, I have more than a little for them, and your nieceâwell, she will need guidance, will she not?â"
Yet, not that this was a hardship. With her uncle now sidelined, Mikasa might even find the Marchionessâ somewhat... unconventional views a touch more useful in her quest to secure a suitable match. How delightfully convenient, truly.
âLady Carla,â Mikasa said, curtsying with a grace sheâd been rehearsing with little enthusiasm. âItâs a pleasure to see you once more.â
âOh, quite, my dear,â Lady Carla replied. âI nearly didnât, you know. The traffic, and these wretched Mitras streetsâone could be forgiven for thinking they were designed to make one late.â She gave a quick flutter of her fan. âBut here I am, nonetheless, prepared for all the excitement the season promises. And you, my dear, are already the diamond of the moment, I daresay.â
The notion of being the âdiamond of the seasonâ or, âdiamond of the first waters,â was a term Mikasa had encountered but never quite grasped. The concept seemed, at best, vague; at worst, entirely absurd. What she understood, however, was that such a title was inherently presumptuousâand that was a quality she, for one, had never cultivated. Still, in the present company, with all the expectations in the air, she couldnât summon much to say in protest. Better to remain silent than to draw attention to the ridiculousness of it all.
âNow, do come along, dear,â the Dowager Marchioness chirped, guiding Mikasa by the arm. âOur places are already assigned.â
And so, they made their way inside, the Duke trailing behind with Falco at his heels.Â
The grand hall was an exercise in opulence, with golden decorations that seemed to swell and rise, making everything else look small by comparison. As they moved through the galleries, Mikasaâs eyes skimmed over the portraits of long-dead monarchs. There was the kingdomâs first reigning queen, the one whispered about for taking her sworn shield as her lover (and rumoured to have had fathered her children). Further along, the queen-wife of the mad king, whose reign had been more her affair than his, as the state of his mind had made such things unavoidable. And, of course, there was the current king, so much like his predecessor in madness that his daughter, Princess Historia Reiss, now sat upon the throne as regent.
But Mikasa couldnât see anymore as they reached the doors of the queenâs hall. The introductions had begun, and a line of debutantes, all in white and feathers, were already waiting alongside their companions.
She and her chaperone fell into place, arm in arm, while whispers passed like letters in a secret exchange. With every new entrant, the doors opened, revealing yet another young lady eager to make her entrance.
âWe have an invitation for tonight,â Lady Carla murmured. âThe Inventions Ball, hosted by none other than Sir Hange. Quite the spectacle, I assure you. The first ball of the season.â
âAh,â Mikasa said as a response.
âI daresay the Duke will be there,â continued the Dowager Marchioness, her words unflagging, âsince Sir Hange is so very dear to him. But fear not, my dear, we shall have the whole of the season to ourselves.â
âAh,â she repeated, the syllable now dripping with something less than eagerness. Realising her tone, she quickly corrected herself, offering, âI am quite positively excited, my lady.â
Lady Carla gave a small, refined sound that passed for delight. âOh, Miss Mikasa, you and I shall be the best of friends.â She inched closer, her hand tightening on Mikasaâs arm. âAnd you mustnât fret. I shall not allow you to choose poorly. Oneâs husband, after all, is a decision one must endure for the rest of oneâs life.â
âI suppose you are pleased with your choice, my lady?â Mikasa ventured.
The Dowager Marchioness exhaled a soft, knowing sigh. âOh, yes, I did well, my dear. Not a single regret. Now, when you find yourself in the same position, I do hope youâll feel just as content in many yearsâ time.â Her voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper. âAnd fret not, I shall not be as demanding as your uncle, hmm? That, my dear, shall remain between us.â
Mikasaâs interest piqued, her brow arched in subtle surprise. âAre you suggesting you might disregard some of the rules he set for me ?â
The Dowagerâs lips curved upward into a sly smile, her answer swift yet brimming with unspoken promises. âYou could say that.â Then she gave a small, almost imperceptible nod before her gaze turned calculating. âBut come, there are gentlemen tonight I would be delighted to introduce you to. Perhaps youâll even meet the marquess.â
âOh? The Marquess?â Mikasa blinked, her gaze a little too direct. âThat means itâyour son, my lady? Really?âÂ
The notion had, surprisingly, not occurred to her. The Dowager Marchioness would, of course, seize the opportunity to introduce her own son. But now that Mikasa thought about it, hadnât Uncle Levi made some offhand remark about the Marquess of Shiganshina? Something about keeping oneâs distance?
She studied her chaperone, trying to unravel the ladyâs intentions with little success. âCan I truly get close to him?â she asked, her confusion plain.
The Dowager Marchioness smiled, a tight, knowing sort of smile, and, without a word, gestured towards the approaching moment. âMiss Mikasa, itâs almost your turn. Stand up straight, and simply be yourself.â
That, it seemed, was the limit of their conversation. The announcer by the door tapped his cane, and the words rang out, introducing Mikasa to society at large. âMiss Mikasa Ackerman, presented by the Right Honourable, the Dowager Marchioness Jaeger!â
The doors swung wide, revealing the queenâs chamber. Mikasa stepped inside, toward the Princess Regent on her throne, and thus, like many before her, became part of the tonâwhether she was ready or not.

as i mentioned earlier, hereâs a scrapped section from castles crumbling. the reasons this part got scrapped are pretty simple:
1. iâm not a fan of the tense and style i used.
2. iâm taking the story in a different direction now. if, for some reason, this part ends up making it into the final fic, trust me, it will be very different. editing and i are best friends, after all, so we always work together to make it feel right.
anyways, enjoy!!!
cw: light smut
A sliver of light slices through the shutters, landing squarely on Mikasaâs face. She stirs, the stifling heat pressing down like a heavy blanket. The sunâs relentless beams signal not just the dawn but the burdens that lie ahead. In silence, she slips from the bed, moving like a shadow across the room.
Naked, as is her habit each morning, a flicker of modesty still stirs within her. She instinctively covers herself, glancing at her sleeping companion. His green eyes remain shut, unaware of her movements, savouring the last moments of peace before duty calls him, too.
She tiptoes to the edge of the room, where her armour awaits. Dressing alone proves a cumbersome task, but she manages. Clad in the weight of her station, she steps forward, her strides purposeful as she takes her place near the kingâs door.
Outside, the toll of the bell reverberates: the king must wake.
âGood morrow, Mikasa,â Hannes, the kingâs steward, greets her with a nod as he approaches. âHow fares our king?â
âSleeping soundly,â she replies, her voice quick and steadyâwords sheâs uttered countless times. âHe hasn't stirred all night.â
âThat is good,â Hannes says with a warm smile. âA restful night does wonders for him. I remember when he was but a boy of ten, plagued by sleepless nights for days on end. The worry gnawed at me; it wasnât good for his health.â
Mikasaâs brow furrows slightly, concern evident in her eyes. âBut surely no harm came from it? He seems so strong now.â
âStrong indeed! Robust and sturdy our king. Even as a princeling, there was vigour in his blood. He was born for greatness.â Hannes moves toward the kingâs chambers but pauses at the door. âYou do not join us, Mikasa?â
She raises an eyebrow. âShould I?â
The man looks at her as if she has asked something absurd, his eyes wide with disbelief.
âWhenever you are absent, he grows restless, and I lack both the patience and the will to deal with that today. Might you grant me this favour?â
Mikasa does not refuse; in silence, she follows him into the kingâs chamber. The king lies on his left side, fast asleep, while the sheets on the right are a tangled mess. For a moment, Mikasa bites her lip, lost in thought, but she quickly dismisses it and strides to the windows, throwing open the curtains.
In the fourth year of spring, the days bloom like the very flowers that fill the royal gardens. Once rare, long springs now stretch over the years, creeping toward a decade, though such an event has only blessed the realm once before.
âGood morrow, Hannes,â comes the kingâs voice, rough with sleep, unaware of Mikasaâs presence.
âHow do you fare this day, Your Majesty? How was your night?â Hannes asks.
The king snorts, his voice edged with frustration, a tone Mikasa doesnât miss. âAlone again, as you see.â Slowly, he shifts, his green eyes landing on her. In them, she glimpses a strange mixture of anger and something deeper, something like longing. âYou rise early, Mikasa.â
She offers him a stiff smile, discomfort lurking at the edges. âIt is my duty, my king,â she replies, turning away to give him space, allowing him to cover himself as the morning sun floods the room.
âI worry that my knight gets enough rest,â he continues, his voice laced with a hint of something bolder. âAfter all, my safety is in her hands.â
Mikasa feels a laugh bubbling up at such shameless words, but her expression remains impassive, as unyielding as her armour. A small shrug is all she gives. âI shall rest better if it eases your mind, Your Majesty.â
The king draws breath, ready to speak again, but Hannes steps forward, his gruff voice cutting through the tension. âMikasa is the finest of your soldiers, Eren. Even if fatigue clung to her, it wouldnât blunt her blade.â
âWell, on that much we agree.â Erenâs tone softened. âShe is the best.â
Mikasa feels a fluttering in her stomach, a warmth rising in her cheeks, but she banishes the feeling at once. Reality settles heavy upon her shoulders, a weight she cannot ignore. Her situation, her positionâthese are the truths she clings to, and she will not allow herself the indulgence of dreams.Â
Finally, she turns to Eren. She finds him dressed in his perpetual black, as if the shadows themselves cling to him. He once told her that his familyâs colours were red and goldâvibrant hues of a past now lostâbut he chooses black now, a mark of the grief seared into his soul. Sometimes, Mikasa thinks that vibrant colours would suit him, hues that would bring out the warmth in his sun-kissed skin. Yet she knows it is a distant dream, one that will never see the light of day (as much as the images of her being his legitimate wife). So she keeps it for herself, locking her secrets away with the countless other things she could say to the king but does not.
âShall we go?â He says and she doesnât let him wait. She just follows.
And thus, the day of King Eren II begins. As it has been since she was sixteen, Mikasa stands by his side, ever the silent sentinel, watching, guarding, bound to the man who holds the crown. Where he moves, she followsâa shadow of him, though she is smaller, less towering, less imposing. Yet there is no doubt of her strength, her unwavering loyalty. She stays behind him, always watchful, her sharp gaze cutting through the air like the blade she carries at her side.Â
She is his sword, his shield, his protector in all things. Eren doesnât need to turn twice to see if sheâs there, her presence is as certain as the blood in his veins, as constant as the stars that burn above. She will always be there, standing with him between the heavens and the earth, her silence a promise, her vigilance an oath unbroken.
And just as she stands vigilant over his life, she dreams of him. She dreams not of steel and duty but of something softer, something far more perilous to her heart. In the quiet corners of her soul, she dares to imagine a world where Eren is hers, not a king, not the ruler of men, but simply hers. A man unburdened by crowns and weight of power, a man whose gaze holds only her, untethered to duty.
She dreams that he belongs to her alone, far from the prying eyes of courtiers, beyond the reach of noble titles, and beyond the endless demands of the realm. In her heart, she imagines that they are bound together, not by obligation but by love. She dreams that he is hers and she is his, and in that dream, they are happy, untroubled, irrevocably happy together in a world of never-ending spring.
But they canât be, and they will never be.Â
âA tight schedule today, Your Majesty,â Hannes declares in the kingâs solar, a chamber where breakfast is perpetually consumed in oppressive silence. It ought not to be a setting for the dawnâs early hours, yet Eren insists it remain so; after all, the royal line is diminished to his solitary self.Â
âYour Majesty?â The man ventures again, his voice tinged with uncertainty, the air thick with tension. At last, the king lifts his gaze from the untouched, cold fare upon his plate.
âWhat were you saying?â he asks, irritation seeping into his tone.
âThat there is a tight schedule today. Many petitioners await. Following that, a visit to the soldiersâ barracks at Captain Ackermanâs behest. And lastly, a meeting with the council.â
Mikasa, standing opposite the king, watches in silence. She quickly discerns the tightness in Erenâs jaw, his grip upon his cutlery firm, knuckles paling. Such signs bode ill.
âAnd what does that matter?â he mutters. âPetitioners, soldiers, councillors. The same lamentations. I have no time for their whinings.â
âYour Majesty, it is imperative that you heed your people,â Hannes presses. âThey depend upon you. The grievances you seem quick to dismiss are the very concerns of those who stand by you. We must not allow this neglect to become our custom.â
The king reclines in his chair, disdain and fatigue mingling upon his countenance. âWell, I suppose someone else can handle it, isnât it? You, Erwin, or the council. Anyone can rule, truly. I merely wish to play with my wolves andâŠâ His eyes drift to Mikasa, and she feels the danger of anything that may come out of his mouth. So before he can voice further thoughts, she interjects.
âMy king.â Her voice is soft but enough to get his attention. âYou cannot afford to abandon your duties. Should you neglect your people and turn away from their plight, you risk losing all that surrounds you. This is not solely about you.â
Erenâs eyes lock with hers, a flash of defiance igniting within but still⊠petulanceâa childish sulk of one who was stripped away of the tender grasp of childhood.Â
âIs it not enough that I am their king? Why should their complaints concern me?â
âBecause being a king is more than merely donning a crown,â Mikasa responds, her tone resolute yet compassionate. âIt is a commitment. The voices of your subjects form the essence of your power. Should you disregard them, the kingdom may well crumble beneath your feet. What if discontent blossoms into revolt? You must do this, not solely for them, but for yourself.â Â
Eren bows his head, resembling a child chastised by a stern mother. His posture betrays an inner conflict, torn between duty and the yearning to evade the oppressive weight of the throne. The walls he has painstakingly built for his protection begin to fracture beneath the burden of his own insecurities. Â
âBut my wolvesâŠâ
Mikasa grimaces in pity, her gaze softening. âYou can play with them when youâre done. They will always be there. But the kingdom needs its king now.â Â
He chuckles bitterly. âWell, that much is true; after all, they are tiny wolves.â
Silence envelops them as the king grapples with his own, impenetrable thoughts. The clash between his desire to shirk his responsibilities and the pressing need to fulfil his role becomes starkly apparent. In such moments, Mikasa wishes to shatter the bond of king and knight, to rush to him and offer the embrace he so rightly deserves. To whisper soothing words into his ear, to scare away the elusive sorrow that eternally shadows. Yet she knows she cannotânot in public at least. Â
âWill you be there?â he asks, as though seeking to barter with his anguish.
Mikasaâs expression tightens in pity, her gaze softening. âYou know I will stand with you, no matter what.â
That promise is sufficient to draw Eren upright once more, his eyes betraying a flicker of relief. âVery well, if you vow not to leave me at any time, then I can endure it.â Â
As their gazes remain entwined, a whisper of intimacy clinging between them, the world beyond dissolves. The kingdomâs woes, the subjectsâ grievances, and the duties of the throne blur in the light of the bond they share. Â
âWell, I suppose the king ought to finish his meal,â Hannes interjects, slicing through the charged atmosphere. Inside her, Mikasa feels a swell of gratitude for the interruption. âI shall prepare things if it pleases you. Mikasa, ensure the king is escorted when he has finished.â Â
âI shall,â she affirms with a resolute nod, watching as Hannes strides away.
With Hannes now absent, a transformation unfolds. Erenâs former desperation metamorphoses, a desperation that transcends the burdens he bears. His hands, once clenched around cutlery, rest upon the table as he rises in one swift motion. Â
âYou did it again,â he says, moving perilously close, his voice a whisper with a sharp edge. âYou left me alone.â Â
Mikasa can only watch as the kingâher kingâapproaches, the air between them crackling with palpable tension. Suddenly, it is as though her role as protector diminishes, reduced to that of a mere damsel in distress. Â
âW-what do you mean?â she stammers, feigning ignorance, though she knows all too well. Â
âYou left me this morning.â He draws her near him despite the weight of her armour and the moral weight of the moment. âYou left my bed again, Mikasa.â Â
The words strike her like a blade, and the tension swells. His breath is a ghost across her cheek, igniting a fire deep within her that she knows she cannot let consume her. And yet, here she stands, unable to pull away. The shutters cast shadows across the room, faint flickers that seem to mock the sinful closeness between them. The outside world vanishes, leaving only the unbearable heat of him and the longing she dares not speak.
âYou shouldnât have left me,â Eren continues. âDo you not understand what it does to me? Every time you walk away, my world crumbles a little more.â
Mikasa opens her mouth, a futile attempt to speak reason. âYou know I canât stay, Iââ
Her words die in her throat as her king finds the sliver of bare skin at the curve of her neck. His lips press against it with agonising slowness, each kiss a molten brand, a promise of things forbidden. She feels him suck gently, his mouth tracing a path that leaves her trembling, unravelling before him. Heâs doing it again, undoing her piece by piece, and sheâs powerless to stop it.
âMikasa. You know I hate it when you leave me.â
She knows. She knows all too well. But even as the guilt twists within her, something deeper stirsâa desire that defies her every oath, a fire she can no longer extinguish.
âEren,â her voice slips out in a low purr when she says his name; it always does. Itâs a sound she despises, but not enough to stop herself. âMy duty is to protect you, not to share your bed.â
But Eren only smilesâthat knowing smirk that always undoes her. âYou protect me already, every time youâre with me.â His fingers trace along the edge of her armour, slipping beneath the cold steel, finding the warmth of her skin. His touch is light, almost teasing, but it leaves her breathless, weak. "Standing at my door changes nothing. You need to be here, beside me, in my arms. Why do you torture me like this?â
Torture? It is no one but her who feels tortured, torn apart by the force of her own conflicting desires. She wants to be strong, to remind him of the sacred distance between them, but the way he looks at her, the way his touch burns, makes it impossible to think of anything but him.
âEren, you have things scheduled for today, remember.âÂ
âIâve already said I will do them, but I need this before the long and tiring day ahead. Please? Let me love you, Mikasa. Please let me. I love youâdo you know that? Do you love me?â
She does not answer.
Erenâs gaze pierces her, searching, pleading, and within that gaze, she sees the truth of his words reflected back at her.
âDo you think itâs easy for me?â he presses, his voice low, almost desperate. âTo stand here, knowing what I want, knowing how I feel, while you push me away? My heart aches for you, Mikasa. You must feel it too.â
His fingers slide further beneath her armour, brushing against the smooth skin of her waist, sending shivers coursing through her body. She fights to retain her composure, but every word he speaks, every kiss he places on her skin, pulls her deeper into a chasm of longing that feels both exhilarating and terrifying.
âEren, please,â she whispers, barely audible, as though saying it too loudly might shatter the fragile balance between them.
But he only moves closer, his lips mere inches from hers, the heat of his breath mingling with her own. âLet me be inside you, just for a moment. Let me show you how much I want you. Let me love you.â
And as he leans in, as his lips graze against hers, the weight of the world outside fades entirely. The only reality that remains is the fierce pull of desire, the undeniable truth of their connection, and the overwhelming need that thrums between them like a live wire.
Mikasa finally surrenders to the gravity of her kingâs need. âYou have to be quick,â she breathes, pulling away just an inch, her heart racing as she begins the arduous task of removing her cloak. âDonât take off all your clothes; just pull down your pants.â
âEvery moment counts,â he murmurs, urgency lacing his tone, his hands deftly helping her with the armour. As the last of it falls away, Mikasa feels exposedânot just in body but in spirit. She meets his gaze, and in those deep, stormy green eyes, she finds the courage to let go of her doubts as she always does when they do this.
His hands find their way to her waist, grounding her even as desire swells between them.Â
âAre you ready?â he asks, his voice low and husky, filled with a warmth that makes her pulse quicken.
âI am,â she replies, a tremor in her voice that speaks of the vulnerability she had fought so hard to contain. With that admission, she feels the weight of the world slide away, leaving only the two of them and the electric connection that binds their fates together.
His lips crash against hers again, fierce and demanding, as though he fears she might change her mind. Mikasa responds with equal fervour, her body instinctively leaning into him, as if she were always meant to be close to him. She can feel the warmth radiating from his body, pulling her into a world where nothing else matters but their shared breath and the undeniable passion simmering between them.
In that moment, she no longer sees herself as merely a protector or a warrior but as a womanâa woman who desires, who longs to be held, and who craves the heat of his body against her own. Erenâs hands roam, exploring her curves, pulling her even closer until there is no space left between them.
âTell me you want this,â he murmurs against her lips as he pulls back just enough to search her eyes. âTell me youâre mine.â
She swallows hard, the weight of his words settling into her heart like a stone. âIâm yours. Always yours.â
âAre you sure?âÂ
âOf course Iâm sure. Iâm yours, Eren, only yours.â
Erenâs face lights up, and without hesitation, he captures her mouth again, deeper this time, more fervent. He lifts her, guiding her to the edge of the table as he settles between her legs, his body pressing against hers, hard and demanding. She wraps her legs around him instinctively, pulling him closer, feeling the undeniable proof of his shaft pressed against her. Heâs hard, heâs big, but her body is already moulded to his, so even if sheâs not wet enough, she knows Eren will slide inside her effortlessly; he always does.
His hands explore with an urgency that quickens her heart, sliding beneath the thin fabric of her blouse, fingers gliding over her skin with a mix of tenderness and desire that leaves her gasping. Each caress sends ripples of pleasure through her, awakening parts of her that had remained dormant for far too long.
âMikasa,â he breathes, as if her name were a prayer, a promise. âTell me that you love me.â
Mikasaâs heart races, the weight of his gaze steadying her, grounding her in the swirling storm of their desires. But the words sit heavily in her throat, caught between fear and longing. She looks away, a flicker of doubt clouding her eyes.
âEren,â she whispers, the tremor in her voice betraying her uncertainty. âIââ
The kingâs expression falters for just a moment, uncertainty flickering across his features. âMikasaâŠâ he presses, his voice low and earnest, searching her eyes for an answer.
âI need you,â she manages, her voice barely above a whisper, the truth twisted in her chest like a thorn. âI need you now, Eren. I need you inside me, please.â
He blinks momentarily, as if hesitating. However, the moment is fleeting, eclipsed by the fervour burning between them. With a deliberate motion, he moves one of his hands below, pulling down the pants that conceal his hardened cock, revealing himself to her in all his raw, unguarded glory.
Eren does not offer warnings or assurances. With one swift, deliberate thrust, he enters her, a gasp escaping both their lips; their bodies mould together. The sensation is overwhelming, a heady mix of pleasure and desire, and Mikasa feels herself stretch to accommodate him so easily.
âOh, Eren,â she gasps.
âYou feel incredible,â he says, âso fucking incredible.â
He stills, slowly sinking his cock into her tight cunt, as if heâs afraid heâll break her in his grip.
âYouâre taking too long,â Mikasa breathes, closing her eyes as she senses him going deep.
âLet me savour this just for a moment.â He lays his head in the crook of her neck, allowing his weight to settle upon her body, gripping her buttocks tightly. âGods, it feels so good to be inside you, Mikasa. I want to die inside you. I truly do.â
Even if his words resonate like sweet songs of eternal love, Mikasa understands that this cannot endure any longer. Beyond the sturdy oak door, the kingdom awaits its king, and duty reigns supreme in his life. So, setting aside the fleeting jealousy that stirs within her for the world that may claim him, she takes hold of Erenâs cheeks to gaze deeply into his eyes.
âFuck me, my king,â she says, âyou have me in your arms. Just fuck me.â
The table beneath them becomes a sanctuary of their desires, the soft sounds of their bodies meeting drowning out any remnants of doubt. Her fingers tangle in his hair, pulling him closer, urging him to continue, to lose themselves in this moment without reservation.
âI always want this. You have no idea how much I need you, Mikasa. You have no idea how much this will fix me.â
âMore,â she breathes, desperation lacing her voice.Â
She wraps her legs tighter around him, urging him deeper, craving the friction that sends jolts of pleasure radiating through her. Eren responds, quickening his pace, each thrust more fervent than the last, their bodies moving in perfect harmony.
âTell me you want me,â he urges, his voice thick with need, eyes locked onto hers, searching for the confirmation he craves.
âI want you, Eren.â
His expression shifts, a glimmer of triumph igniting in his gaze as he draws her closer still. With a fierce determination, he captures her mouth once more, pouring every ounce of his longing into the kiss. Their bodies collide, the table creaking beneath them, the world outside forgotten, lost to the waves of ecstasy crashing over them.
As the tension builds, Mikasa feels herself teetering on the edge, each thrust igniting a fire within her that threatens to consume them both. âEren, Iââ
He silences her with a deeper kiss, the taste of him intoxicating, the need to lose themselves in each other overwhelming. âCome for me.â
The command sends shivers down her spine, and with one final thrust, the dam breaks. A wave of pleasure surges through her, sweeping her away in a tide of bliss that seems to echo through the very fabric of the universe.Â
Eren follows closely, his body shuddering as he finds his release. And when he reaches his climax, he does so as he always does: deep within her, filling her completely, whispering sweet nothings in her ear about how much he loves her, how deeply he adores her. She listens in silence, still trembling and pulsing from within, yearning for this to be real, a moment etched in time that shall not fade into forgetfulness. She gathers his hair and draws him close, for in that instant, he is hers, hers and no otherâs.
And she dreams, gods, how she dreams. She dreams that his seed takes root within her, that he, a man of worth, takes her as his little wife. She dreams of these moments unfurling into a beautiful, joyful family, husband and wife nurturing the fruits of their love, destined to tell tales of how they once were the ones who loved each other most fervently in this kingdom.Â
Yet such foolish, stupid little farcical things, her dreams are, and deep down, she knows it. So she hides them away, swallows them like bitter wine, and buries them beneath layers of steel and duty. They cannot be, they wonât be, they shanât be.
âWe must go, Eren,â she utters, her voice a whisper. Â
âI know,â he replies, yet he does not move. Â
âYou must get out of me.â
âI know that too.â But still, he remains inside her.
âEren,â she begins in a firm tone, and at last, he stirs.
âThere, there. Say no more.â He plants a loud kiss upon her cheek and withdraws. For a fleeting moment, Mikasa senses a hollow ache within her.
Once they are both clad once more and prepared to confront the arduous day, Mikasa opens the door for him. âMy king,â she states solemnly.
Before leaving, Eren turns, bestowing a light kiss upon her lips, an ethereal yet significant caress. âI love you,â he says and strides forth, leaving her ensnared in a tumult of things she cannot fathom at all.
And as she trails behind him, her hand rests upon her belly, recalling that later she must tend to the remnants of his seed within herâthose from breakfast and those from the night before.Â
The seeds he eagerly sows within her are seeds that may never bloom.
