"... Not... Really?" Jewel was shocked at the kid's question. After all, a fish... Had no way to--- anyway. "A 'mom' is a person who you consider your protector, who takes care of you and watches over you, and can be a friend- they're usually older than you, too. While you can technically choose your 'mom' if you don't have one, usually, people consider others 'mothers' because they were raised by them...."
"Can I ask what suddenly brought this question on, Chiro?"

“I… drank something… and it made me remember part of my past.” Chiro was shaking as she started crying again. “And I want to forget it. I want to forget it so much.”
“.... I can’t help you forget, but I can at least be here if you want to talk about it... Or something else.” Jewel nodded her head, faintly. “I’m sorry, there’s not much I can do... Illusion magic doesn’t work on memories, just the present.” She would admonish Chiro about drinking random, unknown vials... But... Now wasn’t the time to chastise. Nor would it probably ever be the time to chastise Chiro about this. She was... Probably suffering more, far more than enough. “Would you like a fish scale I found?”

“WHAT?!” Chinchiro snapped, one bloodshot eye turning to look at Jewel. She did not look good in the slightest. Her eyes were puffy and red, making the scratches on her face far more striking. The scratches seemed to envelop her hands too.
“I…” She turned away. “Leave me alone.”
“No.” Jewel swam as close as she dared to shore, knowing that she couldn’t afford to beach herself, but getting close all the same. “--Chiro, why... Why were you hitting your head on a rock?” At a moment like this, she wished she knew healing magic.

The rock shattered on her head. “I don’t want to remember!”
“Why did they make me do it? Why did I do it?!” She screamed, grabbing her hair.
“Chiro-!” Jewel had only just surfaced, and she had apparently surfaced at a horrid time. She had no proper skills for stopping the child, but all the same, she knew she had to do something. So, what did she do?
....
She yelled.
“CHIRO!!”
Something was wrong. Jewel wasn’t sure why, but she just knew something was wrong.
“It never occurred to me that, even as a fish, my eyes can get tired...”
“Egg.” She’s holding an egg.
“Please tell me you found that on land.” Jewel was confused, and just a hint frightened.

I personally hold the idea that, after Jewel and Chiro got poison resistance from eating those lightly poisoned berries, the two actually started going out of their way to build resistances, as well as other skills.- Jewel probably tried to help Chiro gain an ability to see through illusions early on, for instance, and Chiro tried to help Jewel gain more physical damage resistance.
I also have this semi-personal mindset that Jewel views Chiro as her child after their first run-in, which resulted in Jewel getting the title 'Nurturer', which has a status effect of healing those around them (within a certain radius of course).
And finally- pretty obvious one but I fully believe Jewel has tried at least once to teach Chiro how to swim, due to still recalling how to swim as a human in their previous life... Whether they were successful or not... Who knows.

They couldn’t ‘sunbathe’, persay... Not at this point in their life. Instead, the Glass Ray could only hide just under the surface of the water, feeling the sun’s rays warm their scales near the ocean’s waves. They flicked their tail, causing barely the slightest movement above.

“I may try stealth.” Crunch crunch. “Maybe I could get a big stick and throw it.” She scratched at her face a little, trying to think hard on how to be stealthy. One could almost see the smoke coming from her head.
“There are a lot of different ways to ‘catch’ animals, stealth is just one method... But if that is what you would like to focus on, then by all means.” Jewel flicked her tail, sending a few droplets of water flying through the air as she did. An illusion, but a neat one. It required more focus, with the droplets vanishing into sparkles, that slowly dissipated. “Shall I show you the cave I was speaking of? I can guide you to the entrance, but... No further.” They flapped their ‘fins’ for emphasis.
