The last chapter of Myanmar
I have not been posting a lot of new stuff here but it has just been a lot of the same. Work every day, get some food and relax at home. So not really exciting enough.
How to summarise Myanmar... I do not want to be too negative since of course I see this place very different than people who just stay here for a few days see it. Overall, to be honest it was quite disappointing. There were some beautiful places which are worth it, such as the Bagan area, and a small amount of time on Inle lake. But generally, this country hasn’t a lot to offer. Also considering that it just next to Thailand, one of the most vibrant, welcoming, safe, and best places in South east Asia in my opinion. My opinion is mostly formed by Yangon since I was here for the largest extend of my internship. It smells everything and everyone smells so bad. It is dirty, rubbish everywhere, people farting, spitting, and burping in the streets and the pavement is a real-life game challenge were the goal is not to fall in to a hole. Next to that, except the previously mentioned exceptions Myanmar does not really have a lot of (beauty) to offer, either in nature, cuisine, culture, or local people. If you were to visit Asia for a larger trip I might recommend visiting Bagan but the rest of the country is just a waste of time and money (everything tourism related is really expensive, accommodation, trips, tours, bus, plane tickets et.). Myanmar really feels like the younger brother of a mixture of India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. I guess I am also just used to luxury from the west, since I really miss a hot shower and a matrass.
However, my Internship has been a major learning moment for me. I learned so much about adapting, getting used to unpleasant situations, working with facilities I am not used to and communicating with people who do not even speak a word of English. I learned a lot about my capabilities, a lot more about different types of tourism and how things might work on the other side of the world. Overall, I felt really appreciated by my boss and that definitely helped me.
So, would I have changed anything…. I don’t think so. Even though this time here was quite difficult, I learned a lot and from a learning perspective I think I ended up working at one of the best intern places, I also learned a lot about cultural differences, political issues and the link between business, politics, local life and profit. However, I am sad to say that Saturday (when I fly back to Bangkok) will be my last day in Myanmar and I am not expecting to be back anymore, the country has taking everything out of me and we are both done with each other now.
On the bright side, from Saturday on I will be celebrating my well-deserved holiday with one of my best friends on a beautiful island in Thailand. Couldn’t be more excited!! In the meantime, my dad I moving all my stuff into my new home (thanks dad, sorry I couldn’t help) so a great new beginning is waiting for me back in Breda!!
Great little holiday with my dad, without you my passion for the world wouldn’t even be there. Thank you for pulling me out of my internship bubble and having a great time.

The Beauty that is Yangon
Bagan from the ground and from the air
On Thursday my boss called me and said ; I am sorry I totally forgot to tell you that I am going to Bagan tomorrow and that there is a public holiday on Monday. I reacted with; oke.... well have a safe trip and see you on Tuesday. In the most non big deal way as someone could say something, he asked me, do you have plans this weekend other wise you could come to Bagan as well. I answered.. no no I don’t have any plans and I would love to go to Bagan. His reaction was, oke good tomorrow more information at work, pack your bags!
So I went to Bagan!! The sights were beautiful and it is truly a magical place. I was so happy that I had the opportunity to see this all. A few things did leave me wondering a bit while I was there. My boss said that he would arrange accommodation for me... oke well fine I am not going to decline that offer. This accommodation ended up to be a bed in the office in Bagan.. not quite what I was expecting but well, another experience I can add to my list. Furthermore, when I arrived my boss wanted me to meet everyone at the office of course no problem at all I would be happy too. However, the reality was that after a 10 hour bus drive, an hour delay (which caused me to miss the balloon flight on Saturday morning) and no breakfast we were sitting in a car and going from place to place getting out every 5 minutes, not knowing what was going on and finally after 3 hours arriving at the office. This was quite different than expected and perhaps also wished. But yet again... just go with it and hope I learn something. The rest of the day i tried to stay awake and visited a lot of temples and got to know the beauty of Bagan.
The next morning was a early one, leaving at 04:00 in the hope that I might be flying with a balloon that morning. The fun parts was, that I was travelling with the actual pilots to the departure place and sat at their table while they were calculating how much weight was allowed in the balloon and therefore I got a bit of a special treatment and the buildup was even more trilling. Until one of the pilots turned to me and said; ‘’Gwen, are you ready to fly?’’ I could jump in the air of join, i was going to fly in a hot air balloon!! The flight was a truly amazing experience and I was so happy that I got to do this.
The rest of the day I did some more sightseeing and on Monday I relaxed at a pool (also not the worst thing I could be doing). Monday night I had a night bus back and Tuesday morning work was waiting for me again.
Beautiful and breathtaking Bagan
Golden express - my new home base
Knowing me, I already picked out my outfit for the first day when I was still in the Netherlands so I did not need to worry about that luckily. Because I already knew where the office was from the short tour on Saturday I did not have to worry about either... So that would be quite relaxed then you think? Noop... No not at all. It was lucky that I was hot outside other wise people would have asked why I was sweating so much.
As stressed I was in the morning, as friendly as my new colleagues were and how smooth the day went of course, no need to worry at all. Even though yet again the conversations were not very long or deep I knew that I got to a place filled with lovely people who all tried so hard to welcome me here. During the day I got to know everyone a little, my assignment got more clear and I knew what I would be doing the next few weeks at least. You might think, isn't that normal? Well there a lot of students from my year were the assignment was not clear at all. All end all a great place to do my Internship!
Arriving in Yangon
Arriving in a city where I would stay for five months without even knowing the country... I never did that and even for me it felt quite adventures. I got picked up from the airport by one of my future colleagues.... so Gwen lets try not to have the ‘’I just sat in an Airplane and I don’t care how I look’’ face.
Did you ever sit in a car with two people who wanted to say something but none of them did, well that was my experience. I tried to ask a lot and have some chit chat, however the response was often short or just ‘’sorry my English not so good’’. Oke mentality check... how do I do this? However, it was quite funny how in Asia very one things that if there is a foreigner in the car the AC should be at 15C and not a bit higher. Luckily I was wearing long trousers and a jacket.
When arriving at my new house, an apartment which was owned by the sister of my boss but was no longer in use by anyone and kind of sufficed as a storage for some unused stuff. To be honest I was a little uncomfortable when I firs looked around... a lot of dust.. dead cock-roaches and furniture that looked like it hadn’t been touched in over a year. Quickly I got myself back to together, went to the store, bought 10 bottles of cleaning stuff and started cleaning. After that, quite sweaty and tiring assignment I started to unpack and i already felt a bit like home.
In the evening I got picked up by the sister and the wife of my boss, they showed me a little around and we had some great Burmese food. The next day I just spend the day getting used to my new home and doing some shopping, overall preparing for my first day!!
Running in a suit and a five minute-tour through Berlin, The ITB
Arriving in Berlin Knowing me you should know that I arrived in Berlin overly prepared. Got my suit, with multiple combinations, looked up the right U-bahn route and already knew which bus I was supposed to take from the airport to get to my Air-bnb place. So as expected the journey went smooth and before I knew I was unpacking my bag in my new room. After carefully repacking my bag for my first ITB day at least four times I was thinking that it is such a shame that I am not able to do a full tour of Berlin because I will be working the whole time. Therefore, I didn’t think much longer and took the U-bahn to see at least some things in Berlin. After my five minute-tour through Berlin I was tired and ready to have a nice sleep before my first day of ITB the next day
The ITB I would like to describe my ITB experience as chaotic, new, scary, exciting and most of all very educational. For the first day I was very happy that I linked-stalked my boss so I knew which small Asian man I need to shake hands with and introduce myself. You might think how many can there be? But of course our stand was in the Asia hall which meant there were a lot. The first day was definitely a lot of exploring what was expected of me and getting to know my boss, the company and Myanmar in general. The other days I attended meetings, spied at other stands, got lost at least five times somewhere between the 1st and the 26th hall and explored my ability to have small talk the whole day with so many different people. Saturday was definitely a day in a form of a test for me. This was because in the weekend also non trade visitors could visit the ITB, now I had to put my knowledge to the test and find out what I learned about the company in a few days and try to channel this further onto potential customers. Expect from some very specific questions I could easily answer all the questions and was able to advice the visitors on what to do and how to do it in Myanmar, quite a successful day if you ask me. Preparing myself for one more day like that on Sunday was absolutely unnecessary. The first two-three hours everyone was stressing about the strikes at the airports in Berlin that where unexpectedly being continued Monday and Tuesday. After the stress was in control my boss finally got there two hours after the start of the day… well let’s just say TIT? (This is Thailand) … oh well the Asian mentality I can get just to that again. The next day I took the train back to Dusseldorf instead of the plane due to strikes, well things could be worse. I am writing my blog in a quite coupe with the sun shining outside while I am noticing that these parts of Germany are really just a combination of the Netherlands and some parts of Poland.
Next time you hear from me I will be on my way to Myanmar or just after I arrived, flight in two days!
Holding my dream in my hands
Yessss tickets are booked to Bangkok,I can not wait. I will book a light to Yangon later, depends if I want to hang around Bangkok for a little bit or not just seeing my second home a little bit #Thailand
Also arranged everything to go the Berlin so the adventure is coming closer and closer. I feel a mixture of excitement, anxiety and joy.
Deal.
I was thinking that, since no body really reads my blog anyway and it became more of an outlet for myself to memorize great experiences, express my thoughts or just get some stuff of my chest, which always felt very good I would make it a little more personal.
I just want to put this song out there, people who know me know to what part of my life this concerns. For people who don’t, just enjoy this beautiful song.
- I tell myself it is alright as the tears roll by -
The greatest weekend when two of my best friends from different worlds met and it was just perfect.
