More than the other versions of this show, I’m getting that lots of Si’s bluster is based on being afraid. He’s not just contrary; he’s vulnerable. Believe me when I say that I recognize the expression on his face when he finally appears at the double date, and it’s not disdain at doing something that’s beneath him. It’s apprehension that he won’t fit in, that the new person he’s about to meet won’t like him. Si is a bossy, self-obsessed jerk in a lot of ways, but he’s also someone who’s acutely aware that he can’t reliably connect with the people around him. He’s not so different from Lei–their constrained lives have made them aliens in their own world.

Also, I can’t believe this Dylan Wang kid is an idol actor. He enriches this role so much just with his expressions, which are goofy and rom-comy, but also notably more textured than they need to be. (The enormously successful Lee Min Ho has certainly never managed that in any of his dramas.) Wang’s take on the character is boyish and raw, quick to anger and quicker to forgive.
