I feel like this is a newcomer generational issue, since I haven't really seen the arguments you're making before a few years ago (personally speaking, that is. I very rarely engage in social media, so I don't know how long this has been going on).
I like Vermouth because she's interesting. We have absolutely no idea what her motivations are, and that's so interesting to speculate on. She's protecting Shinichi and Ran because they saved her life once, and in her head some sort of affection was born. That's it. It's not out of the goodness of her heart, which—again—is so interesting to think about.
I personally dislike Haibara. Yes, she's a good guy now, and I do like seeing her character development (going from super unfriendly and paranoid to much more approachable and slightly less paranoid and even funny at times)—but she's still keeping secrets from Shinichi. Like big, important secrets that could help Shinichi take down the organization (We saw this with Shinichi figuring out the boss's email, only to find out Haibara ALREADY KNEW ABOUT IT. And then she dissuaded him from investigating. Girl, you either want these guys gone or you don't. Fear is not the excuse you think it is).
I see why people like these characters. I see why they sympathize with them. I do NOT see why they're trying to act like they're super girl bosses that can do no wrong (the same thing happened with Amuro and Sera, and I'm just incredibly baffled by that).
Recently, there's been an uptick in new fans that come in and (from what I've seen on reddit) don't actually watch or read the show. They rely on others to tell them what's going on, which I used to respond to—it's a long running show, after all, they must have just gotten lost in all the information. I stopped engaging when they kept asking essentially the same questions but for different characters. They're not watching the show. You can tell.
A lot of the people saying these girls can do no wrong are very like very young people who have next to no media literacy, or rely on others to tell them what's going on instead of consuming the media themselves. They will either learn as they get older, or they won't. Just choose not to engage and move on. Dwelling on it will only make you unnecessarily angry and disappointed in other people.
